Steel Authority of India Limited Bokaro Steel Plant STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA LIMITED BOKARO STEEL PLANT Addition of 2.0 MTPA Pellet plant, a 7 m tall Coke Oven Battery and a 2 360m Sinter plant at Bokaro Steel City, Bokaro, (Jharkhand) PROJECT SUMMARY Bokaro Steel plant has already been accorded EC on 16.10.2008 by MoEF for expansion of its capacity from 4.0 MTPA to 7.0 MTPA of crude steel vide memo no. J- 11011/99/2007-IA II(I). Extension of the EC was accorded for a period of five years w.e.f. 15.10.2013 vide memo no. J-11011/99/2007-IA II(I) dtd. 24.01.2014. The proposed addition to the project will be carried out within the existing plant premises of Bokaro Steel Plant which is located in vicinity of BIADA industrial estate of Bokaro Steel City, Sub-division Bokaro of Bokaro District in Jharkhand, at longitude 86°02' to 86°09’ E and latitude 23°38' to 23°42' N. The plant is situated 215 to 243m above MSL gently rolling towards River Damodar, flowing west to east. The proposed facilities in the expansion programme of existing Bokaro Steel Plant of 7.0 MTPA production capacity are as follows: Sn. Proposed unit/facility Production Capacity/ configuration 1. Pellet Plant 2.0 MTPA 0.768 MTPA, 7 m tall top charged (68 2. Coke Oven Battery ovens) COB The raw material required for the additional facilities will be sourced from existing sources. Iron ore fines will be sourced from Bolani iron ore mines and Kiriburu & Meghataburu Iron ore deposits. Limestone will be sourced from quarries of Kuteshwar and Bhawanathpur while dolomite requirement shall be met from quarries of Tulsidamar. Coal requirement shall be met mostly by imported coal and a small percentage (approx. 36%) of indigenous coal sourced from Dugda, Monnidih, Rajrappa, Kathara, Mohuda and other coal mines. The requirement of additional water for the expansion has been estimated to be about 455 m3/h and it will be met from existing source Tenughat. It is also envisaged to treat and recycle entire quantity of water. The additional power requirement for the project will be 32 MVA. which will be met from existing facilities. The additional fuel/energy requirement is shall be met from existing BF gas and Coke Oven gas generation from within the plant. The estimated project cost for the proposed expansion in Bokaro Steel Plant is approximately Rs. 2388.17 Cr. (Rs. 1496.55 Cr. + Rs. 891.62 Cr.). FINANCIAL REVIEW The year 2004-05 witnessed a growth of about 32% in sales turnover at Rs.31,800 crore (previous year Rs.24178 crore), which was the highest ever turnover achieved by your Company. Your company has recorded a Net Profit after Tax (PAT) of Rs.6817 crore during the year as compared to Rs.2512 crore in the previous year, recording an improvement of 171% mainly through increase in sales volume in the domestic market, improved product-mix, buoyancy in steel market, cost reduction measures and reduction in borrowings. Thrust on reduction in borrowings continued and there was a reduction of Rs.2920 crore during the year. This has been achieved by all round improvement in sales and better cash management. Reduction in debt resulted in interest savings of Rs.296 crore. Debt equity ratio has improved to 0.58:1 (as on 31.03.05) from 1.87:1 (as on 31.03.04). Considering short term deposits with Banks of surplus funds of Rs. 5670 crore, your company is virtually a debt free company. The Company continued its thrust on cost control management.     REPORT INTRODUCTORY Steel is key to the development of any country and is considered to be the mainstay of the human civilization. The level of per capita consumption of steel is treated as economic indicator of a country. All major industrial economies are characterized by the existence of a strong steel industry and the growth of many of these economies has been largely shaped by the strength of their steel industries in this initial stages of development. India has been one of the major producers of steel in the world. Prior to the economic reforms of the early 1990s, the Steel Industry of India was regulated and controlled by the Government Policies. After liberalization the Indian Steel Industry evolved significantly to conform to international standards. The India Steel Industry is expected to play a significant role in India‟s economic development in the years to come. Availability of iron ore in the country and well furnished facilities for steel productions are the major aspects which will play a major role in the growth of the steel industry in India. The domestic steel industry has a tremendous growth potential and likely to register significant growth in the coming years in view of the rising demand of steel in infrastructure and realty sectors. However, one of the major initiatives that need to be taken is to focus on increasing consumption of steel in the rural areas. In order to realize the growth potential in the steel sector, it is imperative that the steel industry remain competitive. The availability of critical inputs such as iron ore and coke is equally important for sustainable growth of the industry.
