Quarterly Analysis (Q3-3rd Quarter, 2018-19) Statistics Division Ministry of Steel Major Highlights During Q3, 2018-19 India is the 2nd largest producer of crude steel in world with a share of 5.9% of total crude steel produced in Q3, 2018-19. World crude steel production was 452.43 MT in Q3, 2018-19, having recorded a 0.64% decrease wrt Q2, 2018-19 but 5.28% increase wrt Q3, 2017-18. During Q3, 2018-19, total Crude Steel production of India was 26.74 MT, registering a positive growth rate of 2.39% and 1.27% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and Q3, 2017-18. China’s crude steel production in Q3, 2018-19 was 236.29 MT, a decrease of 2.52% wrt Q2, 2018-19 but an increase of 9.37% wrt Q3, 2017-18. Japan’s crude steel production in Q3, 2018-19 was 25.70 MT, registering an increase of 0.39% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and a decrease of 2.62% wrt Q3, 2017-18. Share of Asia in production of crude steel during Q3, 2018-19 was 70.48% while European Union (28) has contributed 9.35% of total production during the same period. During Q3, 2018-19, production of gross finished steel was 33.596 MT, registering positive growth rates of 3.64% and 5.50% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and Q3, 2017-18 respectively. During Q3, 2018-19, import of finished steel was 1.909 MT recording a negative growth of 9.35% over Q2, 2018-19 but a positive growth rate of 7.38% over Q3, 2017-18. During Q3, 2018-19, export of finished steel was 1.533 MT recording negative growth rates of 14.36% and 44.34% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and Q3, 2017-18 respectively. India Was Net Importer In All Q3, 2018-19. For the same period, Apparent Steel Use (ASU) reached at 23.859 MT, showing a negative growth rate of 1.0% over Q2, 2018-19 but a positive growth rate of 8.10% 2.16% over Q3, 2017-18. During Q3, 2018-19, capacity utilisation of crude steel production was 77.7% which was 2.0% more than the same in Q2, 2018-19 (75.7%) but 3.5% less than the same in Q3, 2017-18. [Table 2.A, Fig: 2.A.1] Production of crude steel in European Union (28) was 42.30 MT during Q3, 2018-19 which has increased by 8.53% and 0.57% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and Q3, 2017-18 respectively. [Table 2.A, Fig: 2.A.1] Share of Asia in production of crude steel during Q3, 2018-19 was 70.48% while European Union (28) has contributed 9.35% of total production during the same period. World Iron Production (Blust Furnace Iron) Production of Iron in the world during Q3, 2018-19 was 311.72 MT, having recorded a decrease of 1.64% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and an increase of 5.43% wrt Q3, 2017-18. (Table 3, Fig: 3.B.1) Production of Iron by China during Q3, 2018-19 was 194.66 MT, which is a decrease of 2.93% over Q2, 2018-19 and an increase of 8.82% over Q3, 2017-18. (Table 3, Fig: 3.B.1) Production of Iron by Japan during Q3, 2018-19 was 18.78 MT, having descreased by 2.72% and 4.03% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and Q3, 2017-18 respectively. (Table 3, Fig:3.B.1) Production of Iron by India (3rd Largest country in Iron Production) was 18.39 MT in Q3, 2018-19 having recorded positive growth rates of 4.71% and 5.04% wrt Q2, 2018-19 and Q3, 2017-18 respectively.
