During the course of my professional and academic career at UTEP, Dr. Fredericksen and I have morphed not only into colleagues, but also into friends. She has never doubted my scholarship and contribution to the discipline I so love—Feminist (s) Rhetoric (s) Historiography. Without the commitment and faith in my potential as a scholar, this project would have remained a vision lacking the intellectual encouragement and counseling of Dr. Fredericksen. Her faith in my scholarly potential is the reason why this project was accomplished. Dr. Beth Brunk-Chavez was invaluable in helping me comprehend the gender and racial complexities of the nineteenth-century. In fact, she illuminated the social, political, and cultural trauma that Frances Willard and Ida B. Wells experienced in the nineteenth-century. Her scholarly intelligence of the nineteenth-century was an essential aspect of my interest in feminist(s) rhetoric(s), and without her knowledge, it would have been impossible to suggest a new “rhetorical feminist” orthodoxy for viewing the Reconstruction Era. Dr. Irasema Coronado was critical to this project because of her knowledge and commitment to social justice, and her broad scholarship of political science and its relation to the lived experience. She told me that scholarship circulates and is a dynamic process—that I should consider what I want scholars behind me to walk away with. Her message was not lost. In fact, it strengthened me during the long gestation of this project. Dr. Helen Foster was also a major force in my scholarly development. She encouraged me to “Th!nk B!gger”— a challenge I keep posted on my computer that I hope is expressed in this project. Her guidance as a mentor and her example as an activist scholar always renewed me iv in moments of confusion and distress. Dr. Kate Mangelsdorf was actively involved with my admission to the Rhetoric and Writing Studies program. Her invisible support throughout the years during my graduate coursework and the writing of this project helped me to focus on the goal that she believed, from the beginning, I was capable of accomplishing. As cohorts, Héctor “X” Carbajal and Cristina D. Ramirez were invaluable. How do you, at this stage, say thank you without being sentimental? It is because of these two–my brother and sister—that I discovered how transformational rhetoric is. Fellow cohorts and graduate students Lucia Dura, Robert Tinajero, Myshie Pagel, Dr. Brian McNely, Nikki Aggee, and Shawn Miller assumed higher roles than they realized. Their questions in class were essential to the writing of this project, which made mine more focused. Myriam Kadri-Ramirez was a friend throughout my graduate studies and remained one both during the conception and writing of this project. She reminded me to stay balanced and urged me to create even during moments of disillusion to emancipate my ideas. It worked! Kev, my life partner, supplied mental relief, laughter, and soulful intimacy in ways that the structure of language cannot articulate. What philosophy can you assign to Old School Love? Simply put, he was there—this fact only surfaces at the end. Taylor and Dylan Marie—my beauties—are cool—there is simply no other way to describe them. Their births have contributed significantly to the texture of my humanity. It is highly unlikely that any theory or methodology will convenience me otherwise. I say thanks to all of you! v ABSTRACT Rival Radical Feminists considers the role of gender and race as master status determining traits and examines them as influential social markers of identity and representation within a nineteenth-century feminist social movement (FSM)—the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Rival Radical Feminists examines how, within a FSM where gender issues understandably govern the political narrative that the philosophical core of the movement shifts into separate and competing spheres when gender issues intersect with racial prejudice? Specifically, Rival Radical Feminists argues that when both political actors are female, with one circumscribed politically by her gender, like Willard, and the other by both her race and her gender, like Wells, issues of power and conflict over these master status positions vie for rhetorical and ideological dominance within a FSM. Further inquiries are: Which identity representation dominates? Why? What are the historical, political, and social conditions that allow such transformation? How do they influence the geographical, political, economic, and social locations for women, both black and white, within the private and public sphere, then and now? Finally, what are the circumstances, which allow some marginal groups membership into the political culture while refusing other marginal groups access? Rival Radical Feminists draws from several scholarly domains to examine a constellation of issues surrounding the rhetoric of Willard and Wells over lynching. For example, it explores the Reconstruction Era and the Reconstruction Amendments (13 th , 14 th , and 15 th ) to interconnect and situate the robust (re) representation of white women and free black women before, during, and after the Civil War to gain citizenship. Rival Radical Feminists evaluates theories of identity politics, critical race theory, geographies of space, feminist social movement rhetoric, and visual rhetoric to assess the perspective of gender and race. Wells __________________________________________ But where one considers different historical characters from the standpoint of a total development, one could encourage each character to comment upon the others without thereby sacrificing a perspective upon the lot. This could be got particularly, I think, if historical characters themselves (i.e., periods or cultures treated as “individual persons”) were considered never to begin or end, but rather to change in intensity or poignancy. -Kenneth Burke , A Grammar of Motives (1969) During the nineteenth-century, a strong feminist social movement (FSM) challenged the cultural, social, and political forces. For instance, as the progressive president of the most prominent and dominant FSM, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), Frances Willard made woman’s suffrage a central tenet. She also recognized that the inclusion of black women to the organization would greatly boost the cultural drift (Eggan) of the nation, now that it was unified over the issue of slavery,

The course makes extensive use of primary source materials. 1 Major themes include: changing ideas about women’s “proper place” in society; the history of the women’s rights movement; women’s role in social reform; changing ideas about sexuality, family, and reproduction; images of beauty and the “feminine ideal”; women and work; and movements for civil and legal rights. Note: Westfield State University assumes that a student will need to spend 16-20 hours a week to complete a 3 credit, on-line course in 6 weeks.     The Woman-Slave Analogy: Rhetorical Foundations in American Culture, 1830-1900 Ana Lucette Stevenson BComm (dist.), BA (HonsI) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics I Abstract During the 1830s, Sarah Grimké, the abolitionist and women’s rights reformer from South Carolina, stated: “It was when my soul was deeply moved at the wrongs of the slave that I first perceived distinctly the subject condition of women.” This rhetorical comparison between women and slaves – the woman-slave analogy – emerged in Europe during the seventeenth century, but gained peculiar significance in the United States during the nineteenth century. This rhetoric was inspired by the Revolutionary Era language of liberty versus tyranny, and discourses of slavery gained prominence in the reform culture that was dominated by the American antislavery movement and shared among the sisterhood of reforms. The woman-slave analogy functioned on the idea that the position of women was no better – nor any freer – than slaves. It was used to critique the exclusion of women from a national body politic based on the concept that “all men are created equal.” From the 1830s onwards, this analogy came to permeate the rhetorical practices of social reformers, especially those involved in the antislavery, women’s rights, dress reform, suffrage and labour movements. Sarah’s sister, Angelina, asked: “Can you not see that women could do, and would do a hundred times more for the slave if she were not fettered?” My thesis explores manifestations of the woman-slave analogy through the themes of marriage, fashion, politics, labour, and sex.

    1 Katy Shannahan OUHJ 2013 Submission The Impact of Failed Lesbian Feminist Ideology and Rhetoric Lesbian feminism was a radical feminist separatist movement that developed during the early 1970s with the advent of the second wave of feminism. The politics of this movement called for feminist women to extract themselves from the oppressive system of male supremacy by means of severing all personal and economic relationships with men. Unlike other feminist separatist movements, the politics of lesbian feminism are unique in that their arguments for separatism are linked fundamentally to lesbian identification. Lesbian feminist theory intended to represent the most radical form of the idea that the personal is political by conceptualizing lesbianism as a political choice open to all women.1 At the heart of this solution was a fundamental critique of the institution of heterosexuality as a mechanism for maintaining masculine power. In choosing lesbianism, lesbian feminists asserted that a woman was able to both extricate herself entirely from the system of male supremacy and to fundamentally challenge the patriarchal organization of society.2 In this way they privileged lesbianism as the ultimate expression of feminist political identity because it served as a means of avoiding any personal collaboration with men, who were analyzed as solely male oppressors within the lesbian feminist framework.     Antifeminism Online MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) Jie Liang Lin INTRODUCTION Reactionary politics encompass various ideological strands within the online antifeminist community. In the mass media, events such as the 2014 Isla Vista killings1 or #gamergate,2 have brought more visibility to the phenomenon. Although antifeminism online is most commonly associated with middle- class white males, the community extends as far as female students and professionals. It is associated with terms such as: “Men’s Rights Movement” (MRM),3 “Meninism,”4 the “Red Pill,”5 the “Pick-Up Artist” (PUA),6 #gamergate, and “Men Going Their Own Way” (MGTOW)—the group on which I focused my study. I was interested in how MGTOW, an exclusively male, antifeminist group related to past feminist movements in theory, activism and community structure. I sought to understand how the internet affects “antifeminist” identity formation and articulation of views. The work is also supplemented with advertisements for local businesses on the remaining three pages and the inside rear cover of the wrappers. Through close analysis of rhetorical activities in which thousands of women participated—including club discourse, public commemoration, legal advocacy, petition work, and publication—it illuminates how these activities reconciled femininity and political involvement in an era and place that categorically denied women the right to self-government. Specifically, this dissertation argues that collective rhetorical practices made available rather than merely expressed new identities and skills among women in Oregon and Washington. As they engaged in symbolic action, together, women bridged the divide between their conventional roles in the private realm and leadership in public life, thereby changing themselves and their communities. Dubinsky Kelly Belanger Malea Powell June 27, 2014 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: rhetoric, comics, feminism, decolonial, composition Copyright 2014 From Inclusion to Transformation: Decolonial Feminist Comix Methodology (With Handy Illustrations) Frances Amelia Howes ABSTRACT Feminist rhetorics need to move us from inclusion to transformation: instead of “including” more and more marginalized groups into the scholarly status quo, or “including” comics into methods of analysis that we already use, we need to transform our practices themselves. Seeing comics research as an expedition into comics doesn't work. The spatial metaphor is failing because it's analogous to a takeover in the colonial sense. I center the both/and experience of being a producer of comics and analyst of them. Drawing from a critical reading of my own comic, I describe “the disobedient how,” a way of learning from transgressive models. I argue that instead of “collecting” comics, decolonial feminist methodology asks that we “attend” comics through listening, experiencing, and having a relationship with them and their creators. As Shawn Wilson's work suggests, knowledge lies in relationships. I use this concept to guide an analysis of Lynda Barry’s recent comics work as well as her comments during a panel at the Comics: Philosophy and Practice conference. In order for academics to have true knowledge about Barry’s work, we must have a right relationship to her and to it, which requires decolonizing our relationship to texts and taking Barry’s comics seriously as sources of theory.

The actual implementation of equal rights is traditionally a central project of progressive political forces. Against the background of the demographic change that can be observed in many industrialised countries family and gender policy has also gained in economic and demographic policy significance. And indeed in recent years – sometimes by means of cross-party alliances – considerable progress has been made. However, in Germany but also in many other countries (neo) conservative and right- wing populist forces are marshalling against progressive gender and family policy. That is happening even in countries in which gender equality achievements long appeared to enjoy social consensus. This study brings together experiences and current family and gender policy debates from nine countries.
