The Woman-Slave Analogy: Rhetorical Foundations in American Culture, 1830-1900 Ana Lucette Stevenson BComm (dist.), BA (HonsI) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics I Abstract During the 1830s, Sarah Grimké, the abolitionist and women’s rights reformer from South Carolina, stated: “It was when my soul was deeply moved at the wrongs of the slave that I first perceived distinctly the subject condition of women.” This rhetorical comparison between women and slaves – the woman-slave analogy – emerged in Europe during the seventeenth century, but gained peculiar significance in the United States during the nineteenth century. This rhetoric was inspired by the Revolutionary Era language of liberty versus tyranny, and discourses of slavery gained prominence in the reform culture that was dominated by the American antislavery movement and shared among the sisterhood of reforms. The woman-slave analogy functioned on the idea that the position of women was no better – nor any freer – than slaves. It was used to critique the exclusion of women from a national body politic based on the concept that “all men are created equal.” From the 1830s onwards, this analogy came to permeate the rhetorical practices of social reformers, especially those involved in the antislavery, women’s rights, dress reform, suffrage and labour movements. Sarah’s sister, Angelina, asked: “Can you not see that women could do, and would do a hundred times more for the slave if she were not fettered?” My thesis explores manifestations of the woman-slave analogy through the themes of marriage, fashion, politics, labour, and sex. -

1 Katy Shannahan OUHJ 2013 Submission The Impact of Failed Lesbian Feminist Ideology and Rhetoric Lesbian feminism was a radical feminist separatist movement that developed during the early 1970s with the advent of the second wave of feminism. The politics of this movement called for feminist women to extract themselves from the oppressive system of male supremacy by means of severing all personal and economic relationships with men. Unlike other feminist separatist movements, the politics of lesbian feminism are unique in that their arguments for separatism are linked fundamentally to lesbian identification. Lesbian feminist theory intended to represent the most radical form of the idea that the personal is political by conceptualizing lesbianism as a political choice open to all women.1 At the heart of this solution was a fundamental critique of the institution of heterosexuality as a mechanism for maintaining masculine power. In choosing lesbianism, lesbian feminists asserted that a woman was able to both extricate herself entirely from the system of male supremacy and to fundamentally challenge the patriarchal organization of society.2 In this way they privileged lesbianism as the ultimate expression of feminist political identity because it served as a means of avoiding any personal collaboration with men, who were analyzed as solely male oppressors within the lesbian feminist framework. Antifeminism Online MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) Jie Liang Lin INTRODUCTION Reactionary politics encompass various ideological strands within the online antifeminist community. In the mass media, events such as the 2014 Isla Vista killings1 or #gamergate,2 have brought more visibility to the phenomenon. Although antifeminism online is most commonly associated with middle- class white males, the community extends as far as female students and professionals. It is associated with terms such as: “Men’s Rights Movement” (MRM),3 “Meninism,”4 the “Red Pill,”5 the “Pick-Up Artist” (PUA),6 #gamergate, and “Men Going Their Own Way” (MGTOW)—the group on which I focused my study. I was interested in how MGTOW, an exclusively male, antifeminist group related to past feminist movements in theory, activism and community structure. I sought to understand how the internet affects “antifeminist” identity formation and articulation of views. Dubinsky Kelly Belanger Malea Powell June 27, 2014 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: rhetoric, comics, feminism, decolonial, composition Copyright 2014 From Inclusion to Transformation: Decolonial Feminist Comix Methodology (With Handy Illustrations) Frances Amelia Howes ABSTRACT Feminist rhetorics need to move us from inclusion to transformation: instead of “including” more and more marginalized groups into the scholarly status quo, or “including” comics into methods of analysis that we already use, we need to transform our practices themselves. Seeing comics research as an expedition into comics doesn't work. The spatial metaphor is failing because it's analogous to a takeover in the colonial sense. I center the both/and experience of being a producer of comics and analyst of them. Drawing from a critical reading of my own comic, I describe “the disobedient how,” a way of learning from transgressive models. I argue that instead of “collecting” comics, decolonial feminist methodology asks that we “attend” comics through listening, experiencing, and having a relationship with them and their creators. As Shawn Wilson's work suggests, knowledge lies in relationships. I use this concept to guide an analysis of Lynda Barry’s recent comics work as well as her comments during a panel at the Comics: Philosophy and Practice conference. In order for academics to have true knowledge about Barry’s work, we must have a right relationship to her and to it, which requires decolonizing our relationship to texts and taking Barry’s comics seriously as sources of theory. -

The actual implementation of equal rights is traditionally a central project of progressive political forces. Against the background of the demographic change that can be observed in many industrialised countries family and gender policy has also gained in economic and demographic policy significance. And indeed in recent years – sometimes by means of cross-party alliances – considerable progress has been made. However, in Germany but also in many other countries (neo) conservative and right- wing populist forces are marshalling against progressive gender and family policy. That is happening even in countries in which gender equality achievements long appeared to enjoy social consensus. This study brings together experiences and current family and gender policy debates from nine countries. Repressive policies might force them to work in difficult or dangerous fields. The more data I gathered during my research, the more I became aware of the impressive effects the pragmatic New Zealand sex industry decriminalization policy has on sex workers and other parties in this country. 2/26/2021 Feminist Rhetoric in the Digital Sphere: Digital Interventions & the Subversion of Gendered Cultural Scripts - Ada New Media ISSUE NO. 8 Feminist Rhetoric in the Digital Sphere: Digital Interventions & the Subversion of Gendered Cultural Scripts Liz Lane “Women’s rhetorical lives have always existed, among the innumerable, interminable, clear examples of public, political, agnostic, masculine discourse.”— Cheryl Glenn, Rhetoric Retold, 175 In the summer of 2013, the Austin, Texas State House garnered the attention of many beyond Texas’ borders as an online live stream of Senator Wendy Davis’s thirteen-hour filibuster, an attempt to delay the passage of a restrictive abortion bill, swept across the Internet.[1], The #StandWithWendy hashtag became an enlivened trending topic on Twitter and the capitol building spectators chanted, “Let her speak!” as Davis entered the final hour of filibuster, only to be halted by a third “strike” for allegedly breaking the filibuster rules.[2] Though a vote seemed to be imminent, a secondary delay saw fellow senator Leticia Van de Putte take to the podium near midnight, raising a question that created a shock wave through the audience of virtual and in-person observers: “At what point must a female senator raise her hand for her voice to be recognized over the male colleagues in the room?” (Barro, 2013). Van de Putte’s now famous rhetorical question has been at the forefront of oral cultural interactions for decades, if not centuries, as women have been relegated to the background of public speech or silenced altogether by a patriarchal structure of discourse. The utterance also held great weight for digital culture; the initial promise of the internet peddled a forum in which one can interact freely, without worry of restrictions based on one’s gender, class, race, or other identifiers. -
