Find this book: In The Myth of Race, Robert Wald Sussman describes, locates, and contextualises the history of eugenics, or the infamous attempts to prove that ‘race’ is a biological reality. Sussman’s main argument is that ‘race’ is, instead, a cultural invention, which has far- reaching implications in and outside of academia. It is, for example, worth reconsidering what it might mean that “modern moral theory and moral racial theory have the same father” (p.30). Immanuel Kant, Sussman suggests, proposes a racial philosophy – and has become one of the most influential racists of all times. In the second chapter, Sussman discusses the birth of eugenics, the brainchild of Francis Galton (1822-1911). Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, “coined the term eugenics in 1883 from the Greek words for ‘well-being’ and based the concept on some of Darwin’s writing” (p.49). Through a statistics based methodology Galton tried to prove a couple of things. First, that the notion of ‘race’ is real, and second, that there is such a thing as racial differences. -

Fractured Circles of Race 1 Fractured Circles of Race: A Heuristic Model for Teaching about Racial Categorization in Anthropological and Historical Perspective Robert Shanafelt Georgia Southern University This paper presents a heuristic model for teaching about human variation and transformations of concepts of race over time. It suggests that key aspects of the complexities related to the topic can be fruitfully discussed by making use of the image of a feedback loop between folk models and scientific models of human kinds and human variations. In order to elucidate this discussion, a brief review of the history of racial thinking and some current ideas about race, genetics, and biomedicine are also presented. Anthropology since its inception has been engaged in research and debate about the meaning and validity of racial categories. While the reality of race was once taken for granted, in recent years the view that “race is not an accurate or productive way to describe human biological variation” (Edgar and Hunley 2009: 2) has become widespread. Indeed, recent surveys and official statements from professional associations suggest that the pioneering critiques of traditional racial assumptions made by Franz Boas (1940 [1995]), Ashley Montague (1942 [2008]), and Frank Livingstone (1962) have been widely accepted among anthropologists in North America, although they have had uneven influence elsewhere (Lieberman et al. 2004; American Anthropological Association [AAA] 1998; American Association of Physical Anthropologists, 1996).1My concern here, though, is not to discuss this development in all its detail. Against eugenics and anthropocide AN APPEAL TO ABOLISH ANY1 ARTIFICIAL REPRODUCTION OF THE HUMAN BEING A crime against humanity is taking place before our eyes. This crime, born in the brains of biologists2 and committed through the means of medicine and genetics, presents itself outwardly as a good deed and an emancipation for mankind. A good deed for victims of sterility (organic or due to the chemical and industrial poisoning of the environment), for single women and couples of the same sex who are naturally infertile. Emancipation from the living - spontaneous, autonomous and unpredictable - from the constraints of nature from which derives birth with all its uncertainties. This crime is eugenics (at first called viriculture or aristogenics), the artificial selection of the human species, renamed this way in 1883 by Galton, a cousin of Darwin and also co-inventor of biometrics together with Karl Pearson (1857-1936). Or again race hygiene (Rassenhgyiene) in 1904, by Alfred Ploetz and Ernst Rüdin, two Nazi doctors. A crime supported and spread by countless scientists, businessmen (Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller), thinkers (Renan, Teilhard de Chardin), political leaders (Trotsky, Churchill, Hitler). It was again renamed transhumanism in 1957 by Julian Huxley - Aldous Huxley’s brother (Brave New World), biologist and director of UNESCO - after the Nazis had revealed the true nature of eugenics. The creation in a laboratory of an Übermensch, a “master race” of “enhanced” supermen. Machination of the human (artificial production, genetic modifications), this is the means employed by eugenic transhumanism. That is, by this racism coming from laboratories, which its promoters disguise today as pseudo-egalitarianism3. -

To answer these questions, I analyze archival materials related to the Dillingham Commission (1907-1911), an investigative commission that conducted the most comprehensive study of immigrants ever undertaken by the federal government. With the rapid increase of immigration in the late nineteenth century, there was a growing sense that immigration was a problem, and both the public and elite policymakers deliberated over immigration control. The Dillingham Commission was tasked with providing a scientific foundation for immigration policy-making by sorting out “desirable” immigrants from “undesirable” ones based on a massive amount of statistical and ethnographic data. The importance of the Dillingham Commission, however, lay in the fact that it captured the ways in which immigration was transforming racial boundaries – those within and around the the whiteness. -

Oba- sogie’s recently published books seems perfectly obvious.1 Both books are not only about race and racism but also offer strong evidence of the social construction of race. That said the books differ significantly in approach and content. Sussman is an anthropologist. In The Myth of Race: The Troubling Persistence of an Unscientific Idea, he brings his an- thropological expertise to bear upon tracing scientific racism through history. -

Plant and Animal Coloration: Pigments, Attraction, Inbreeding and Outbreeding, Camouflage and Mimicry Bacteria, fungi, protists and animals may be colored as a result of being self- luminous, producing variously colored light in a process known as bioluminescence. However, most colored organisms are not self-luminous. Coloration of nonluminous organisms may result from pigments, which cause color due to the differential absorption of the spectral colors of sunlight, or it may result from striated or lamellar structural specializations, which impart color due to differential diffraction or interference of the spectral colors of sunlight. This lecture will cover the biology of coloration due to pigments and the next lecture will primarily cover coloration due to striated or lamellar structural specializations. Melanins are commonly-occurring pigments. Melanins are pigments involved in human eye, skin and hair color. We have talked about the importance of eumelanin in producing our individual skin color, and eumelanin and pheomelanin in producing our individual eye color. Now I will talk about the contributions of eumelanin and pheomelanin in producing our individual hair color, including the colors of eyelashes and eyebrows that protect the eyes from debris and perspiration. Eumelanin can be either a black or a brown pigment. Pheomelanin can be either a reddish, orange or yellow pigment. The concentration of eumelanin determines how dark the hair is. High concentrations of brown eumelanin result in brown hair and low concentrations 601 result in blonde (female) or blond (male) hair. When combined with a high concentration of brown eumelanin, small amount of phaeomelanin makes the hair lighter or reddish brown. -

“More Merciful and Not Less Effective”: Eugenics and American Economics in the Progressive Era Thomas C. Leonard Oliver Wendell Holmes was made a Progressive lion upon his pithy dis- sent to the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn a New York statute restricting (male) bakers’ working hours. “The 14th Amend- ment,” said Holmes famously, “does not enact the Social Statics of Mr. Herbert Spencer.”1 Twenty-two years later, in another well-known case, Holmes wrote for the majority, which upheld the constitutionality of a Virginia law proposing involuntary sterilization of persons believed to be mentally retarded—the “feebleminded,” in the jargon of the day. “The principle that sustains compulsory vaccination is broad enough to cover cutting the Fallopian tubes,” Holmes wrote in Buck v. Bell (1927). “Three generations of imbeciles,” Holmes volunteered, “is enough.” How does an opponent of Spencerian Social Darwinism come to en- dorse coercive sterilization of the unfit? (Not) White: The Autobiography of My Biracial Body by Brittney Blystone A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Brittney Blystone, 2016! !ii Abstract (Not) White: The Autobiography of my Biracial Body combines historical research with creative nonfiction and autobiography. I trace the history of scientific racism from the late 1800s to 1960s, from the American Emancipation to the Civil Rights Movement, from the era of my white great-great- grandmother’s birth to the era of my Filipino mother’s. Rather than arguing or defining races, I play with the structure of historical and scientific research to express and explore my life as a biracial woman in the cultural, political context that surrounds and influences this identity. My thesis aims to reveal scientific racism’s ongoing influence in contrast to my maternal line and my personal experiences. It aims to leave the reader emotionally invested yet unsure of racial categories. Biracial bodies may seem like valid proof against races as strict categories; however, biracial people do not control racial categories—even as it pertains to their privileged/unprivileged body. As with other people of colour, biracial women cannot easily locate their personal history or cultural views in the formation of their identity. Even when biracial people pass as white and receive white privileges, they never receive the privilege of defining themselves, especially contrary to racial profiling. Whiteness can only be bestowed or be withdrawn. Those with privilege over racial categories constantly categorize and re-categorize biracial bodies without considering nonphysical aspects, such as family relationships, community ties, and the biracial person’s relationship to their body.
