Pitching In League Southern Premier Division Central Official matchday magazine Tuesday 22 September 2020 7.45pm FA Cup 1 st Qualifying Round Tonight’s visitors: Tonight’s match sponsor: Peter & Jill Douglass 1 2 From the Boardroom Leiston FC A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of st Club Information: Biggleswade Town for tonight’s FA Cup 1 Qualifying Round fixture. With a completely new management structure for all of the senior teams in place since the season ended suddenly in March, we embark on a new era and direction for the club. Darren and Chris have been a breath of fresh air with their clear ambition to develop young players. The oldest player in the starting line up v. Rushall on Saturday was just 24 years old, which clearly shows the direction they intend for the club to move in the coming seasons. The Reserves, under Ryan Honeyman and George Club Officials: Dean, will continue to provide a route for the U18 players to progress, but have also retained players who are under 22, but have experience of playing Step 6 football. I have personally relinquished the reins for the A team, having achieved the goal of establishing that team last season, and we are very pleased to have Stuart Reavell and Anthony Brooks at the helm this season. Stuart and Anthony will assist Matt Morling with the Under 18s this season, which provides continuity between the different teams. I would like to record my thanks to Roger Hitchman, who was my Assistant Manager for the A team last season, for the tremendous hard work and dedication he brought to the role. Hopefully, we will see Roger fulfilling a role within the club for the coming season. Team Management: On the playing front, Saturday’s game against Rushall was a typical Southern League encounter with the opposition being described by one spectator as ‘big units, no nonsense and no thrills’. The players need to take heart from the game as performances in the same mould will see them win the majority of those types of games here at Victory Road. The FA Cup fixtures come round quickly this season with just ten days between fixtures, and the next round scheduled for Saturday 3rd October. A financial bonus for the club was us being one of three teams from the Southern League Premier Central Division who were drawn to play in the Preliminary Round, where we banked £1444 for the win. Financial Board Members: Andy Crisp Tonight’s winners will bank £2250 with the losers receiving £750. Robin Watson st On Thursday, our Under 18s play Mildenhall Town in the FA Youth Cup 1 Qualifying Peter Mayhew Trevor Elmy Round here at Victory Road kick off 7.45pm. In the previous round, they were deserved Steve Coulter winners, beating Hadleigh 3-0. Please come along to support the boys. Admission is £4 Ali Douglas adults, £2 concessions, and U16 free. Peter Douglass Jill Douglass (Minutes Secretary) I hope you enjoy tonight’s game. The Blues went down to a defeat on the opening day of the 2020/2021 season at the weekend, their first on the opening day of the season since a 3-1 home loss to Wisbech in August 2010. Leiston brought new loan-signing Matthew Weaire straight into the starting eleven as he made way for the departed Matt Richardson in a match sponsored by DANIEL and PAUL ANDREWS, with JASON BURNS GARDENING SERVICES donating towards the match ball. Rushall Olympic grabbed all the points on the opening day of the season in the 80th minute as a Sam Whittall header from close range condemned Leiston to defeat. The game started off at a fast tempo, but it was Leiston who had the first chance with a curling effort by Jamie Eaton-Collins that just went over Rushall keeper’s Jonathon Flatt’s crossbar. Moments later, and Finlay Barnes released Liam Jackson through on goal but Flatt stood up well to save. Leiston defended well as Rushall threatened with crosses into the box, and Sam Donkin in the home goal did well to save from a Rushall player as half time approached. The second half began with Kyle Hammond shooting over on the angle before Jamie Eaton-Collins forced Flatt into a save down to his left and Liam Jackson shot over the rebound. Chances were then hard to come by for both sides and Donkin saved from Chekaine Steele, but the offside flag was raised. Rushall introduced Michael Kightly late on and it paid off as a delivery into the area from the left-hand flank was headed home by SAM WHITTALL. Leiston tried hard to get back in the match, but the away side stood firm and held out to get a first day victory. Craig Cooper 5 Good evening, everyone, & welcome to Victory Road for our first game of the season under the lights. Tonight, we welcome Biggleswade Town to this fine part of Suffolk in the world competition. While the Blues were losing by the odd goal to Rushall Olympic at the weekend, our opponents tonight also lost, 1 tonight. It we come out on top this evening. If I from the game against Rushall Olympic, but it wasn out in front of a relatively healthy attendance of 213. However, a quick glance in the Non section shows it was in fact the lowest attendance in the Southern Premier Central League, which perhaps emphasises that, along with the logistical & geographical challenges this league brings, these are some big, well supported clubs we will be competing against! After this evening weekend. Hopefully, this evening, the Blues will give a good account of themselves & either way there will be a result tonight. So, how are your nerves? Enjoy the game, everyone. 6 Good evening, everyone, & welcome to Victory Road for our first game of the season under the lights. Tonight, we welcome Biggleswade Town to this fine part of Suffolk in the world’s oldest & arguably greatest cup competition. While the Blues were losing by the odd goal to Rushall Olympic at the weekend, our opponents tonight also lost, 1-0 away to St Ives Town. So, both teams will be looking to kick start their season & progress into the next round tonight. It’s always a tight call when you get drawn against opponents from your own league, so let’s just hope we come out on top this evening. If I’m honest, I just think we ran out of steam on Saturday. We certainly held our own & deserved something from the game against Rushall Olympic, but it wasn’t to be. Interestingly, the game here on Saturday was played out in front of a relatively healthy attendance of 213. However, a quick glance in the Non-League Paper’s results section shows it was in fact the lowest attendance in the Southern Premier Central League, which perhaps emphasises that, along with the logistical & geographical challenges this league brings, these are some big, well- supported clubs we will be competing against! After this evening’s game, we face another tough fixture with a trip to the Midlands to face Coalville Town at the weekend. Hopefully, this evening, the Blues will give a good account of themselves & either way there will be a result tonight. So, how are your nerves? Enjoy the game, everyone.
