Well summer vacation is over (time flies when you are having fun), kids are back to school and EVENTS in Saprae Creek are starting up again. Enjoy September everyone, it is going to be a busy one. Councillor’s Corner – September 2013 by Al Vinni I am still basking in the warm glow of the cancellation of the Alberta Oil Sands’ lease. Over the years, I was told by many that AOS’s development could not, would not, be stopped. Some of the people who told me that were elected members of the Provincial government; others were senior Provincial government employees. I am so happy that we got what we wanted: a stop to oil development in and around our residential neighbourhoods. Unfortunately, we do not have much time to rest on our laurels, as the next challenge is upon us. Oxbow, the company proposing to expand sulphur handling and processing at the Lynton rail yard is having an Open House on September 11, 2103 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Vista Ridge. I encourage everyone who is interested in the long term future of Saprae Creek to come out to that Open House and ask questions of Oxbow and demonstrate to them that we are involved in our community. With what we learn from this meeting we will be better able to make a plan of action concerning this development. The work on community halls has moved slowly this summer. To be fair, our administration was set back by about six weeks dealing with flood related issues. We will continue to move ahead with a process to identify the type and location of the halls on Draper Road and Saprae Creek. To this end, Marilyn’s work on identifying a parcel in Saprae Creek is very promising, while in Draper there is a parcel in the RMWB’s control that was obtained for the expressed purpose of a community hall. Ultimately, community members, through consultation, will decide if these are the sites we go after for the construction of our community halls. The Placemaking is proceeding at what I might call a very measured pace. I guess for some of us those banners will take some getting used to. However, these types of displays has been well received in other areas of the RMWB, Poplar Park downtown being one notable example where I think the banners fit in quite well with the surroundings. In any event, work will no doubt carry over to next year before all the Placemaking is completed. On a sour note, I was advised at the start of this week that actually there was no oil available again this year for our roads and that the road crews were going to go ahead with calcium chloride on top of the new gravel that had been laid down. My thanks to Ed Tatum for bringing a number of facts to my attention, particularly concerning the ability to source oil out of Edmonton. It seems whoever is purchasing oil for the RMWB, or rather, not purchasing it; is unaware that it can be had even if it cannot be obtained at the factory gate in Lloydminster. So I have some questions that I will be looking to Administration to answer this week. I have not in my three years on Council been given the gears on an issue like I have on this road repair project. Yearly maintenance of our roads used to be so simple. Anyway, on the bright side, the commitment is to hot roll the roads next year with asphalt, so that is something to look forward to (just don’t hold your breath). I am very angry about this situation and I will get some answers. On a happier note, I have been enjoying my term as Deputy Mayor this summer, a term that runs up to the day that the new Council will be sworn in, being October 29th. I have attended many events over the past few months as the summer is very busy with activities. I have learned that the Mayor works very hard and is an incredibly busy person. I will be making an official announcement on September 3rd, but I wanted to let it be known through this space that I will be running for re-election this fall as the Ward 3 Councillor. I thank you all for the support I have received over the past three years. Finally, I wanted to end by commenting on the passing of our dear neighbor, Ken Janke. There was a beautiful ceremony today (August 25th) at the McMurray Gospel Assembly celebrating Ken’s life. Bertha, his wife of 58 years, was there looking great. Many Saprae Creek folks shared stories about Ken at the reception downstairs following the official ceremony. It was a very touching moment of community that was truly bittersweet. Over the past three years Ken occasionally summoned me for an audience and explained to me what I should be doing. I will miss that advice. We have lost a Saprae Creek original.
