Pro Gradu Paronen APPRAISAL IN ONLINE REVIEWS OF SOUTH PARK: A study of engagement resources used in online reviews. Master's thesis Tiina Paronen University of Jyväskylä Department of languages English August 2011 JYVÄSKYLÄN YLIOPISTO Tiedekunta – Faculty Laitos – Department Humanistinen tiedekunta Kielten laitos Tekijä – Author Tiina Paronen Työn nimi – Title APPRAISAL IN ONLINE REVIEWS OF SOUTH PARK: A study of engagement resources used in online reviews. Oppiaine – Subject Työn laji – Level englanti Pro gradu -tutkielma Aika – Month and year Sivumäärä – Number of pages elokuu 2011 76 Tiivistelmä – Abstract Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisin kielellisin keinoin kirjoittaja voi ilmaista mielipiteitään ja arvioitaan verkkoarvosteluissa. Tutkielma pyrkii kuvailemaan keinoja, joilla kirjoittaja huomioi lukijan pyrkiessään omiin tavoitteisiinsa. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on myös tarkastella verkkoarvosteluja genre-analyysin näkökulmasta. Teoreettisesti ja metodologisesti tutkimus nojaa Martinin ja Whiten kehittelemään arvioimisen analyysiin (appraisal analysis). Tutkimusaineisto koostuu neljästätoista televisioanimaation verkkoarvostelusta. Verkkoarvosteluja tarkastellaan laadullisesti. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat kirjoittajan kiinnittävän paljon huomiota suhteeseen lukijan kanssa, mikä ilmenee kirjoittajan käyttämistä kielellisistä keinoista. Tutkimuksen perusteella lukijan ja kirjoittajan suhde on kirjoittajalle vähintään yhtä tärkeää kuin kirjoittajan omien mielipiteiden ilmaisu. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että kirjailija luo itselleen oletuslukijan valitsemillaan keinoilla. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat verkkoarvostelujen sisältävän paljon viittauksia viihdemaailman henkilöihin, elokuviin ja ihmisiin. Viittaukset auttavat kirjoittajaa luomaan verkkoarvosteluille oletuslukijan. Tutkimuksen perusteella linkit ovat verkkoarvosteluille tyypillisiä piirteitä, jotka ohjaavat lukijaa. One can find an article on almost any subject that comes to mind. The internet presents a possibility for writers everywhere to publish and share their texts. All one really needs is access to a computer and the internet. As a result, the internet is filled with articles, journals, newspapers, blogs and so forth. The internet also works as a new forum for critics all around the world. Traditional reviews have migrated from newspapers to the internet, where writers are given the possibility to easily share their thoughts and ideas with the rest of the world. The purpose of this study is to investigate the linguistic methods and tools that writers apply to express opinions, to evaluate, to criticize and to complement. My work will focus on online reviews, which are evaluative and argumentative texts to begin with and therefore likely to include different ways of expressing attitudes and opinions. Another reason to study reviews is my own personal interest in different ways of expressing one's opinions and in ways of persuading the reader to believe that what one is arguing is in fact the truth. Furthermore, I am interested in the textual characteristics of online reviews as a genre and especially how these characteristics are constructed in the vocabulary and grammar of the reviews. Both the theoretical and the methodological framework of this study rely heavily on the theory of systemic functional grammar. The main field of study I am working in is discourse analysis, more specifically appraisal analysis. Appraisal analysis is still a relatively new area in discourse analysis and there is a lot of room for new studies. My study contributes to research in these areas in the sense that even though there is research about reviews and especially about literary criticism, there is relatively little research about online reviews and their linguistic characteristics. Accordingly, the 8 practical application of this study is to offer information about the genre of online reviews and its characteristics. As my material I will use reviews on the animated

PRESS RELEASE Brownmark Films, LLC Contact: Bobby Ciraldo, Andrew Swant FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Phone: 414-263-4180 E-Mail: [email protected] Attorney of Record: Caz McChrystal Phone: 715-346-4660 BROWNMARK FILMS VS. VIACOM, ET AL What What (In the Butt) Producers File Copyright Infringement Case Against South Park November 12th, 2010 - Milwaukee, WI -- Brownmark Films, the two-person production company behind the viral YouTube video What What (In the Butt), filed a copyright infringement lawsuit today against Viacom International Inc, Comedy Partners (known as Comedy Central), Paramount Pictures Corporation, MTV Networks, and South Park Digital Studios LLC. Brownmark Films claim that their music video, a comically innocuous portrayal of the song's salacious lyrics, was used in an episode of Comedy Central's South Park without permission. The episode, entitled "Canada on Strike" contains a shot-for-shot recreation of significant portions of the What What (In the Butt) video. The episode satirizes the 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike and illegally appropriated Brownmark Films' video in order to do so. While Brownmark Films was never contacted by Comedy Central for use of the video, it is believed that the song "What What (In the Butt)" was legally licensed through its respective copyright owner. Unlike most music videos, which are financed by the artist's record label to be used as a promotional tool for the recording, What What (In the Butt) was produced jointly by Brownmark Films and Samwell, then an unsigned musician with an unpublished song. While primarily intended as a comedic art piece, Brownmark Films created the video with hopes of licensing it for wider distribution.

INTRODUCTION This Table came about as a result of the partnership between Zen Studios and South Park; this license has given Zen the opportunity to produce 2 Tables so far (with the possibility of more to come) based on the cult hit cartoon South Park. This Table is of course based on a fan favourite of the show, Butters; the voice actors from the show even lent their voices to the Table and thus make it feel even more authentic. Match all that with background music from the Butters show and you got one heck of a Pinball Table! I hope my Guide will help you understand the Table better.

January 2, 2010 Raven Foundation, Annual Essay Contest Benjamin Barber, [email protected] South Park: Wannabes, Victims and The Death Camp of Tolerance Most people realize that popular culture is, mostly, a massive seething coil of competing trends. Of course, trends themselves are mass movements of people copying whatever they’ve been told is the latest, hippest thing. Some media presences manage to capitalize on this by showing up all the sheep-like imitation for what it is. In order to do this they have to pick apart whatever the latest movement is and discover what drives it. South Park is one such presence. With its solid thirteen season run of intense (as well as obscene and absurdist) critique, South Park has spent a dogged career ripping-on any fad that manages to weasel its way into the limelight. Inevitably, the cultural force most mocked by this Comedy Central cartoon is imitation. South Park is not the first to notice the importance of imitation. Before South Park creators, Tray Parker and Matt Stone, were born, French critic René Girard was subverting the trend-obsessed realm of academia. His mimetic theory made a simple initial statement: we all desire according to the desire of another. This means we always imitate or mimic the other. However, imitation can be complex, and Dr. Girard has spent his career enumerating and illuminating its complex structures. As we will see, South Park too, has considered some of these structures, including, negative imitation, the surrogate victim mechanism and the modern concern for victims in just three of its many mimesis-conscious episodes.
