ANNUAL REPORT 2011 The Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) combines a broad spectrum of disciplines (such as population biology, statistical and mathematical modelling and genom- ics) to foster the concept of ecology as a driving force of evolu- tion via selective processes, with a corresponding influence of evolutionary changes on ecology. As of 31 December 2011 CEES consists of 125 members including students, researchers, technical and administrative personnel. The centre has a core group of 19 employees of which 12 are full-time, two are employed by the Department of Mathematics, one by the Department of Economy and one by the Institute of Marine Research. In 2011, CEES hosted two Kristine Bonnevie Professors, from Florida State University (USA) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. One em- ployee is a visiting scientist at the University of Alberta (Canada). There were representa- tives from 25 nationalities at CEES in 2011. CEES supervised 23 Master and 28 PhD students in 2011, and was also involved in the teaching of 13 PhD/Master courses and 4 Bachelor courses. 4 new PhD students were employed, and 9 PhD students and 8 master students completed their degrees. The CEES graduate school held its annual conference at Holmen Fjordhotell with 114 participants. Approximately 59 MNOK of the total 2011 budget of 121 MNOK came from the 54 exter- nally funded research projects conducted by CEES in 2011. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The genus Homonota comprises nine South American species of terrestrial and nocturnal lizards. Homonota lizards lack the femoral pores typical of other South American Phyllodactylidae, and their infradigital lamellas are not expanded. We here describe a new species, Homonota taragui sp. nov., exclusively found on a small group of three hills up to 179 meters above sea level in central eastern Corrientes Province, Argentina. The new species differs from other Homonota species by a combination of characters, including: a well-marked dorsal, reticulate, dark pattern contrasting with a lighter colored background; small, star-shaped chromatophores on the abdomen; the post-orbital region of the head covered by granular scales; the dorsal and anterior regions of the thighs covered by keeled scales interspersed with cycloid scales; and the internasal scale in contact with rostral scales. -

A summary of the parasitic nematodes of reptiles from Argentina is presented. It is a compilation of 29 parasitological papers published between 1992 and May 2020. This review includes information about 40 species of reptiles (4 snakes, 3 turtles, 1 anfisbaenian and 32 lizards). Twenty-six nematodes species have been reported from reptiles. The present review provides data on hosts, geographical distribution and site of infection. A host/parasite list is also provided. The Herpetological Collection from Bolivia in the “Estación Biológica De Doñana” (Spain)

Castroviejo** ABSTRACT The collection consists of 822 specimens, of which 529 are amphibians, all of them anurans (5 families, 17 genera and 51 species) and 293 specimens are reptiles (10 fami- lies, 28 genera and 49 species). The collection has around 25% of the amphibians spe- cies known to occur in Bolivia and about 19% of the reptile species. They come from 55 localities of the Bolivian Departments of Beni, Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz, Potosí and Santa Cruz and represent the following bioregions: Puna, Chaco, Chiquitanian Forest, Wet Savannas, Ceja de Montaña, Yungas, Interandean Dry Valleys and Humid Lowland Forest. The specimens of Scinax chiquitanus and Phrynopus kempffi are paratypes. The record of Pleurodema borelli is the first for the Santa Cruz Department and second for Bolivia. Liolaemus dorbignyi also constitutes the second report for the country and Tropidurus melanopleurus is cited for the first time for the Beni Department. RESUMEN La colección herpetológica de Bolivia depositada en la Estación Biológica de Doñana La colección se compone de 822 ejemplares, 529 anfibios y 293 reptiles. Los anfi- bios son todos anuros, pertenecientes a 51 especies de 17 géneros y cinco familias. Los reptiles estan representados por 49 especies, incluidas en 28 géneros de 10 familias. Liolaemus is one of the most diverse genera of vertebrates, currently comprising 267 species classified into sev- eral monophyletic groups. Among them is the Liolaemus wiegmannii clade, including obligate sand-dwelling lizards with particular morphological traits and behavioural patterns associated with their habitat. One member of this group is Lio laemus rabinoi, a species from Argentina that has formerly been considered extinct. It was first found in 1972 on the mar- gins of the El Nihuil dam in San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina. Four additional specimens of L. rabinoi were recorded in 1974–75, but subsequent searches were unsuccessful and resulted in the inclusion of this species in red conservation lists. Geographical sampling bias and restricted search methodologies have resulted in the distribution of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians being patchily known. Available data is almost entirely based on brief collecting trips and rapid ecological inventories, often several decades apart, which inevitably struggle to detect more inconspicuous species and patterns of abundance. This has led to a deficit in our knowledge of the true distribution and abun- dance of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians. The establishment of the NGO Para La Tierra at Reserva Natural Laguna Blanca (RNLB), Depto. San Pedro, Paraguay allowed the first modern sustained, multi-method inventory of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians to be performed at a single site. Despite the small size of the reserve (804 ha), a total of 57 reptiles (12 of national conservation concern) and 32 amphibians (one of national conserva- tion concern) were collected during five years of random sampling, qualifying RNLB as the most biodiverse re- serve for reptiles and amphibians in the country. Six species occurring at RNLB have been found at no other Para- guayan locality. Legal protection for this private reserve expired in January 2015 and the conservation implica- tions of the inventory results are discussed. It is proposed that the long term legal protection of the reserve be con- sidered a national conservation priority and that the diversity of the herpetofauna be recognized with the designa- tion of RNLB as Paraguay’s first Important Area for the Conservation of Amphibians and Reptiles. -

Methods We assembled a database containing 551 lizard species, their phyloge- netic relationships and multiple life history and ecological variables from the lit- erature. We use phylogenetically informed statistical models to estimate the factors related to lizard productivity. Results Some, but not all, predictions of metabolic and life-history theories are supported. When analysed separately, clutch size, relative clutch mass and brood frequency are poorly correlated with body mass, but their product – productivity – is well correlated with mass. The allometry of productivity scales similarly to metabolic rate, suggesting that a constant fraction of assimilated energy is allocated to production irrespective of body size. -

An accumulation of bone remains of two Liolaemus species (Iguanidae) in an Holocene archaeological site of the Argentine Puna Adriana M. Albino1, Débora M. Kligmann2 Abstract. An accumulation of iguanian bone remains was found inside a rodent burrow in an Holocene archaeological site of the Argentine southern Puna. Characters of the preserved bones suggest that a minimum of two species of the Liolaemus genus is represented. One of them is undoubtedly attributed to the montanus group, probably L. poecilochromus or L. andinus.The finding of Liolaemus bone remains in the Argentine Puna Region represents the first record of this genus in an archaeological site of South America and suggests that specimens of at least two Liolaemus species exploited the same refuge simultaneously, including both adult and juvenile individuals.
