He is considered the pre-eminent representative of the metaphysical poets. His works are noted for their strong, sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially compared to that of his contemporaries. Donne's style is characterised by abrupt openings and various paradoxes, ironies and dislocations. These features, along with his frequent dramatic or everyday speech rhythms, his tense syntax and his tough eloquence, were both a reaction against the smoothness of conventional Elizabethan poetry and an adaptation into English of European baroque and mannerist techniques. His early career was marked by poetry that bore immense knowledge of British society and he met that knowledge with sharp criticism. Another important theme in Donne’s poetry is the idea of true religion, something that he spent much time considering and theorising about. He wrote secular poems as well as erotic and love poems. He is particularly famous for his mastery of metaphysical conceits.[2] Despite his great education and poetic talents, Donne lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends. -

REVIEWS Not the Only Word Kenneally, Christine. 2007. The First Word: The Search for the Origins of Language. New York: Penguin Books. By Lyle Jenkins Christine Kenneally’s The First Word is a review of work in the area of language evolution intended as an introductory overview for the general reader and, as such, is a valuable resource for pointers to work in progress on a wide range of evolutionary topics; these include primate calls, birdsong, categorical perception, gene research, computer simulation studies, to name a few. This is the subject of the second and third parts of the book. These parts contain the most valuable information on language evolution research. However, the first part of the book is devoted to interviews with Noam Chomsky, Sue Savage–Rumbaugh, Stephen Pinker and Paul Bloom, and Philip Lieberman. Here the stage is set for a kind of ‘linguistics wars’ on language evolution, with Chomsky on one side of a ‘debate’ and just about everybody else on the other side. This is the least convincing part of the book, as we will see. According to Kenneally, the study of the evolution of language can be divided into several phases — one starting in 1866, when “the Société de Linguistique of Paris declared a moratorium on the topic” (p.7), and another phase when “the official ban developed fairly seamlessly into a virtual ban” (p.79) which was maintained, it is claimed, until the publication of a paper by Pinker and Bloom around 1990 (but see below). The “virtual ban” on the study of evolution of language seems to be ascribed by Kenneally almost solely to Chomsky. -

Despite more than 75 years of separation from the Holocaust, AMerican readers are still fascinated with the subject. In her book A Thousand Darknesses: Lies and Truth in Holocaust Fiction, Ruth Franklin mentions the fear of “Holocaust fatigue” that was discussed in 1980s and 1990s AMerican media, by which she meant the worry that AMericans had heard too about the Holocaust and could not take any more (222). This, Franklin feared, would lead to insensitivity from the general public, even in the face of a massive tragedy such as the Holocaust. After all, in his 1994 book Holocaust Representation: Art within the Limits of History and Ethics, Berel Lang estiMates Holocaust writing to include “tens of thousands” texts, spanning fiction, draMa, MeMoir, poetry, history monographs, and more (35). -

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen them before; I am always surprised. They are proof that I am somewhere very high and very strange. At thirty thousand feet light floods the plane. Ahead the night drapes across the earth. We barrel toward the darkness, and then we tunnel quickly through it. In a few hours, when we land, it will be morning. An Appendix on Criticism of Donne's Writings I RESPONSES BEFORE THE TWENTIETH CENTURY The fullest accessible collection of such responses is A. J. Smith's volume John Donne: The Critical Heritage (1975). A slighter selection may be found in F. Kermode (ed.) Discussions of John Donne (Boston, 1962). The 'Elegies on the Authors Death' printed with Miles Flesher's Poems by J.D. (1633) and reprinted by H. Grierson in Donne's Poetical Works (1912) provide an interesting illustration of the 'image' of Donne by the time of his death. R. Granqvist's The Reputation of John Donne 1779-1873 is a useful discussion of the reception of Donne's work in the nineteenth century. Such items allow a reader to chart movemen~s in Donne's reputation from the seventeenth century to the end of the nine teenth. They also provide insights into what aspects of Donne's work were of most interest and thereby illustrate both features of taste in earlier centuries and some of the ways in which texts are conditional rather than transcendental. Finally, taken together, such items subvert the once-common view that Donne was essen tially re-invented by the twentieth century, which is not to deny that Donne in our time is a rather different figure from the Donnes of earlier periods. II. DISCUSSIONS OF THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY Some useful material is to be found in Kermode' s Discussions (above) and in J. Lovelock (ed.) Donne: Songs and Sonets (Casebook series, 1973). Jessica Ready Professor Margaret McDermott March 8, 2008 “The Rape of the Lock”: An Essay in Frivolity Alexander Pope’s “The Rape of the Lock,” is a satirical poem based on true events. Pope’s use of the mock-epic literary style trivializes the incidents in the story by describing them in grandeur fashion. Using epic conventions such as heroes and heroines, battles, the underworld, and sprites, Pope ridicules all involved by treating petty situations with great gravity. He successfully reveals the skewed values of the upper middle class in the 18th century. The word rape in the title is the first example of adding serious moral implications to a superficial situation. The first instance of the mock-epic style also occurs immediately in the first stanza, when the author introduces love, war, and a muse. “What mighty contests rise from trivial things,” (line 2). Pope sets the tone for the piece in this line, diminishing epic conventions by using them ironically to describe trivial grievances. He introduces the reader to the heroine who suffers the insult, in the second stanza, calling her a Goddess. “Say what strange motive, Goddess! could compel/A well-bred lord to assault a gentle belle?” (lines 7-8) Again, Pope exaggerates the incident by comparing the cutting of hair to an assault or rape. Guarding the heroine, Belinda, are sylphs. Sylphs are the spirits of women who were “light Coquettes,” in their lifetime, such as Belinda is. The inclusion of sylphs, gnomes, salamanders and nymphs in the fourth stanza represent the four elements, air, earth, fire and water. -

1.Catullus, Poems 1/12/05 2:52 PM Page 1 INTRODUCTION LIFE AND BACKGROUND We know very little for certain about Catullus himself, and most of that has to be extrapolated from his own work, always a risky procedure, and nowadays with the full weight of critical opinion against it (though this is always mutable, and there are signs of change in the air). On the other hand, we know a great deal about the last century of the Roman Republic, in which his short but intense life was spent, and about many of the public figures, both literary and political, whom he counted among his friends and enemies. Like Byron, whom in ways he resembled, he moved in fashionable circles, was radical without being constructively political, and wrote poetry that gives the overwhelming impression of being generated by the public aªairs, literary fashions, and aristocratic private scandals of the day. How far all these were fictionalized in his poetry we shall never know, but that they were pure invention is unlikely in the extreme: what need to make up stories when there was so much splendid material to hand? Obviously we can’t take what Catullus writes about Caesar or Mamurra at face value, any more than we can By- ron’s portraits of George III and Southey in “The Vision of Judgement,” or Dry- den’s of James II and the Duke of Buckingham in “Absalom and Achitophel.” Yet it would be hard to deny that in every case the poetic version contained more than a grain of truth.
