Will karate create Bullies? Kids don’t like to deal with bullies, and yet they are faced with them on a regular basis in school and within the community. Kids that don’t know how to deal with confrontations are often chastised, which leads to the development of low self-esteem. This lower self-esteem can also affect other aspects of a kid’s life, including grades in school. Learning self-defense and karate stop bullies every time. Karate teaches respect above anything else. This allows those that are already bullies, to learn that there is more to life than pushing others around. Those who are getting bullied also learn valuable tools, which guide them in how to effectively deal with bullies. Self-defense is an important skill that everyone should learn – and it begins with kids. Karate for kids focuses on mental and physical traits, which help teach self-defense and discipline. With these acquired skills, kids will know what to do when faced with a bully. They will also know how to handle the situation, instead of getting into unnecessary fights or running away from the problem altogether. Kids who take karate often build a better sense of self, as well as increase confidence levels. They also learn a great deal about themselves, while learning how to deal with bullies and re- solve issues. While karate stop bullies, the knowledge gained is also enough to make an imme- diate impact on self-esteem. karate helps them mature into adults that know how to defend themselves in certain situations. They can also apply their skills in other areas as well. The respect that is taught in karate is second to none. This is why so many kids choose karate over other activities What is TAMESHIWARI? Tameshiwari, the art of breaking wood, title, bricks, and stone with the first or the bare foot, is not a purpose of karate, but rather serves as a barometer of acquired strength and technique. It is useful for this purpose because in Kumite (sparring) you must never actually touch the oppo- nent for fear of causing extreme physical injury. Tameshiwari allows the karateka to expend total effort and energy on an inanimate object, and successful results are indicative of one who had mastered his art. Tameshiwari requires excep- tional balance, form, concentration of spirit, and calmness. It is a challenge to the ability of the karateka and will test the limits of his strength, He must use all the power he possesses in order to succeed at each attempt. Solis Ortus is supporting Breast Cancer Month by wearing pink belts for the whole of October. Any karateka regardless of belt level may wear this. All proceeds go to the Cancer foundation. Solis Ortus is proud to support these type of events as part of a good karate Character is to show that we care Weird forms of martial arts Rough and Tumble Lerdrit Lerdrit is a modern derivation of the traditional Thai fighting techniques This one is a lot more intense than it sounds. In fact, they should have called currently practiced by the elite commandos of the Thai Royal Army. The it “maim and kill”, since that was the main goal in mind when this system of basic principles of Lerdrit are similar to those of its predecessors (Muay fighting was developed during the 18th and 19th centuries in the southern Thai, Muay Boran). However, there are a few key differences that kick it United States. The term “gouging” was also used to describe this fighting up by a whole new factor of awesomeness. style due to the fact that one of its most prolific techniques was eye gouging, and not the classic Three Stooges finger poke either. Fighters are taught to attack without warning, immediately take their op- ponents to the ground, and finish the fight quickly with one of the many Rough and Tumble fighters emphasized maximum disfigurement and a no- devastating kill strikes, such as a boot to the throat or elbows to the tem- holds-barred ferocity that can be challenged by very few others. Some were ple, all while minimizing risk of injury by using the “hard” parts of the even said to have filed their teeth into razor-sharp weapons, which they body, such as knees, palms, shins, and (the aforementioned classic) the would then use to bite off the ears, noses, lips, and fingers of their oppo- elbow. As with all military fighting systems, Lerdrit’s goal is radical and nents. And since the genitals were fair game, many fighters literally lost their specifically designed for life or death situations. It’s not just about kicking manhood in these cold-blooded confrontations. This heartless brutality is the ass; it’s about taking lives. main reason why Rough and Tumble isn’t often talked about or practiced in these “civilized” modern times. Dambe And since most of the techniques were never officially codified and cannot even be practiced without the extreme danger of life-altering injury, they have been largely ignored by the majority of the modern martial arts community. It seems nowadays that most people, even those who love to fight, are just not quite hardcore enough for the eye-gouging, neck-biting, genital-ripping fun that is Rough and Tumble. Bakom Based on the ancient boxing traditions of Egypt, Dambe is a deadly strik- ing art developed by the Hausa people of West Africa, many of whom traveled the land as butchers, moving from village to village performing combat ceremonies and taking on any challengers. The primary weapon in Dambe is the strong-side fist, also known as the spear, which is wrapped in a piece of cloth covered by tightly knotted cord, while the fighter’s favored leg is wrapped in a thick chain.
