    The Iron Age Tom Moore INTRODUCfiON In the twenty years since Alan Saville's (1984) review of the Iron Age in Gloucestershire much has happened in Iron-Age archaeology, both in the region and beyond.1 Saville's paper marked an important point in Iron-Age studies in Gloucestershire and was matched by an increasing level of research both regionally and nationally. The mid 1980s saw a number of discussions of the Iron Age in the county, including those by Cunliffe (1984b) and Darvill (1987), whilst reviews were conducted for Avon (Burrow 1987) and Somerset (Cunliffe 1982). At the same time significant advances and developments in British Iron-Age studies as a whole had a direct impact on how the period was viewed in the region. Richard Hingley's (1984) examination of the Iron-Age landscapes of Oxfordshire suggested a division between more integrated unenclosed communities in the Upper Thames Valley and isolated enclosure communities on the Cotswold uplands, arguing for very different social systems in the two areas. In contrast, Barry Cunliffe' s model ( 1984a; 1991 ), based on his work at Danebury, Hampshire, suggested a hierarchical Iron-Age society centred on hillforts directly influencing how hillforts and social organisation in the Cotswolds have been understood (Darvill1987; Saville 1984). Together these studies have set the agenda for how the 1st millennium BC in the region is regarded and their influence can be felt in more recent syntheses (e.g. Clarke 1993). Since 1984, however, our perception of Iron-Age societies has been radically altered. In particular, the role of hillforts as central places at the top of a hierarchical settlement pattern has been substantially challenged (Hill 1996).

Part A - Current Report Church Introduction & Statement of Significance St Mary's Church, Little Washbourne, is a historic Anglican church at Little Washbourne in the civil parish of Dumbleton, Gloucestershire, under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. The church dates from the 12th century. St Mary's is constructed in limestone, with Cotswold slate roofs. Its plan is simple, consisting of a five-bay nave and a two-bay chancel with a roof at a slightly lower level. At the west end of the roof of the chancel is a bellcote with rendered walls, some weatherboarding, and a pyramidal roof. In the south wall of the nave are three buttresses, a window under a pointed arch, and a doorway also with a pointed arch. At the west end of the church are pilaster buttresses, and a window under a pointed arch.

    The Early Medieval Period Andrew Reynolds Of the periods considered in this volume after the Mesolithic, the early middle ages remains the most difficult to identify in the archaeological record. Archaeology has revealed a few new but significant sites since the 1980s ahd the practice of metal detecting continues to augment the material record. While the data remain limited, scholarly thinking in early medieval archaeology has changed significantly since the mid to late 1980s and what is offered here is a narrative that reviews the significance of certain previously known sites, but which explores additional themes such as the chronology and nature of territorial organisation. This paper, therefore, is not intended as a comprehensive guide to the early medieval archaeology of the county, but rather as an attempt to place aspects of the known evidence in relation to new discoveries and in the light of current thinking at a national level. The archaeology of towns and recent work on ecclesiastical sites is only cursorily mentioned. The abbreviation ASC in the text refers to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (Swanton 2000). INTRODUCTION Gloucestershire was border country during the early middle ages. During the 6th and early 7th centuries, the county lay at the western limit of cemeteries containing burials with Germanic associations, a feature shared with Wiltshire to the south and the Marcher counties, Hereford and Worcester, to the north. Quite what this distribution represents is considered further below. When documents allow a clearer picture of the emergence of the 11th-century shire, it is as the southern part of the province of the Hwicce, a people first mentioned in the second quarter of the 7th century and politically defunct one hundred years later having lost any aspects of semi-independence that they may have possessed to the Mercians (Stenton 1971, 45).

    AN UNAUTHORISED 'FOREWORD' TO THE CLAYTON FAMILY BOOK. -FT is our desire, as the surviving first cousins by birth or marriage on the Clayton side, of the principal author of this book, to place on record for those of later generations into whose hands the volume may come, an 'appreciation,' and a personal note. In many respects Francis Corder Clayton ('Cousin Frank') may be regarded as a unique personality. As a bachelor, and having lost his only brother early in life, his many cousins, and perhaps especially the children of his cousins, became the recipients of his constantly exhibited generosity, and his thoughtful care and interest in no small degree. The enthusiasm with which he followed up and hunted for any detail which might throw light upon the 'Family,' is consistent with the thoroughness and pertinacity with which he undertook any service for them; qualities that he exhibited in all other work, whether in business, pub- lic service, or family affairs. How many of his relatives have been generously made the sharers of his love for travel both at home and abroad; what family gathering whether in joy or sor- row but has had his helpful and cheering participation; what intimate or friend, can forget his unfailing gift of reminiscence and anecdote; and to how many have his wise and considerate gifts given the needed incentive, or assistance, to success in their after careers; these things are only fully known to the re- cipients. But no record of them can convey the personality of the giver. Humorous, kindly, and with untiring activity, 'Cousin Frank' may well be described as the second father of many both older and younger, among his wide circle of relations and friends.
