  • District 9 – a Little Known Fact About the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Movie
District 9 – A little known fact about the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the movie By CvB Posted on 28 August 2009 Image: D-9.com District 9, the new film by the renowned film producer and Oscar-winning director, Peter Jackson, who was responsible for the production and special effects of movies such as King Kong and Lord of the Rings, is released on the big screen by Ster Kinekor today. Not many people know that some of the scenes for the movie were filmed at the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria in December 2008. The filming involved one of its Anatomy halls that was converted in a sci-fi biomedical laboratory with, among other things, a space-technology sliding door, and the Anatomy museum, while some equipment from the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH) and the Biomedical Research Centre were also utilized. A pulsating atmosphere existed on the set in the week during which actors, crew-members and technical personnel spent time on the campus while life-like 7-feet aliens were ‘hanging around’. The movie not only features some South African settings but is mainly set in Johannesburg as the city that is being invaded by aliens from space. As we all know, South African born Neill Blomkamp, who was also present on the set during filming at the campus, was the Director while fellow South African, Sharlto Copley, plays the lead role. According to the preliminary reviews by critics this promises to be an excellent movie with amazing special effects that were executed to perfection.

  • Ordinary Heroes: Depictions of Masculinity in World War II Film a Thesis Submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in Pa
Ordinary Heroes: Depictions of Masculinity in World War II Film A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors with Distinction by Robert M. Dunlap May 2007 Oxford, Ohio Abstract Much work has been done investigating the historical accuracy of World War II film, but no work has been done using these films to explore social values. From a mixed film studies and historical perspective, this essay investigates movie images of American soldiers in the European Theater of Operations to analyze changing perceptions of masculinity. An examination of ten films chronologically shows a distinct change from the post-war period to the present in the depiction of American soldiers. Masculinity undergoes a marked change from the film Battleground (1949) to Band of Brothers (2001). These changes coincide with monumental shifts in American culture. Events such as the loss of the Vietnam War dramatically changed perceptions of the Second World War and the men who fought during that time period. The United States had to deal with a loss of masculinity that came with their defeat in Vietnam and that shift is reflected in these films. The soldiers depicted become more skeptical of their leadership and become more uncertain of themselves while simultaneously appearing more emotional. Over time, realistic images became acceptable and, in fact, celebrated as truthful while no less masculine. In more recent years, there is a return to the heroism of the World War II generation, with an added emotionality and dimensionality. Films reveal not only the popular opinions of the men who fought and reflect on the validity of the war, but also show contemporary views of masculinity and warfare.

THERE’S A NEW MO’ IN TOWN! Wednesday November 24: First it was Mr. T, now Mr. E is standing up for men’s rights to sport a Mohawk! The newly crowned Mr England, Vaughan Bailey, has joined forces with The A-Team and celebrity groomer Jason Shankey to ensure November is the month of the Mohawk! Thanks to all-action hardman BA Baracus in The A-Team and a whole host of manly celebrities, from Jared Leto to David Beckham, more and more British men are getting Mo’d up, as ‘the Hawk’ makes its mark as one of the styles for 2011. First sported by Mr T in the original A-Team series, it has taken Mr. England to re-launch the funky cut, inspired by the new film version of The A-Team. Bailey, who was crowned Mr England in September, went from Hobo to Hunk, having been plucked from a life on the streets to be crowned Mr. England, and cites BA Baracus as one of his inspirations. Now he is fronting the campaign with celebrity groomer Jason Shankey, who is offering free Mohawks to anyone feeling manly enough to ask for a ‘BA’ on Friday 26 November. All those who take up the offer will also be rewarded with £5 off the A-Team on Blu-ray when it is released on Monday 29th November. Shankey, whose Fulham salon sees some of London’s coolest celebrities through its doors in London’s most happening district, has seen a huge rise in the demand for Mohawks this year.

  • Unseen Horrors: the Unmade Films of Hammer
Unseen Horrors: The Unmade Films of Hammer Thesis submitted by Kieran Foster In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2019 Abstract This doctoral thesis is an industrial study of Hammer Film Productions, focusing specifically on the period of 1955-2000, and foregrounding the company’s unmade projects as primary case studies throughout. It represents a significant academic intervention by being the first sustained industry study to primarily utilise unmade projects. The study uses these projects to examine the evolving production strategies of Hammer throughout this period, and to demonstrate the methodological benefits of utilising unmade case studies in production histories. Chapter 1 introduces the study, and sets out the scope, context and structure of the work. Chapter 2 reviews the relevant literature, considering unmade films relation to studies in adaptation, screenwriting, directing and producing, as well as existing works on Hammer Films. Chapter 3 begins the chronological study of Hammer, with the company attempting to capitalise on recent successes in the mid-1950s with three ambitious projects that ultimately failed to make it into production – Milton Subotsky’s Frankenstein, the would-be television series Tales of Frankenstein and Richard Matheson’s The Night Creatures. Chapter 4 examines Hammer’s attempt to revitalise one of its most reliable franchises – Dracula, in response to declining American interest in the company. Notably, with a project entitled Kali Devil Bride of Dracula. Chapter 5 examines the unmade project Nessie, and how it demonstrates Hammer’s shift in production strategy in the late 1970s, as it moved away from a reliance on American finance and towards a more internationalised, piece-meal approach to funding.
