Wandering Skipper Survey at the San Elijo Lagoon, Encinitas California
Wandering Skipper Survey at Famosa Slough, San Diego, California 27 August 2010 Observers: Keith Greer, Betsy Miller, and Kim Roeland Introduction The wandering skipper (Panoquina errans) is a small butterfly of the family Hesperiidae. It is identifiable by its rich dark brown color and cream-colored spots on the dorsal forewing. The wandering skipper is found only along the coast in southern California, Baja California and northwestern mainland Mexico. Populations have been recorded from Huntington Beach, Upper Newport Bay, and Capistrano Beach (Orsak, 1977). In San Diego, the wandering skipper has been documented in the Tijuana Estuary, San Dieguito Lagoon, and Agua Hedionda lagoon (SanGIS, 2010), but it appears that no extensive survey data have been published. The wandering skipper is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (World Conservation Monitoring Centre, 1996) and is under consideration for possible listing on the endangered species list as a threatened species because of the reduction of salt marsh habitat. The larval host plant for this species, salt grass (Distichlis spicata), is found in transitional habitats along the edge of the high marsh. Nectar sources include Heliotropium spp., Haplopappus spp., and Frankenia salina (Orsak 1977). Potential habitat for the wandering skipper was considered to be areas containing the larval host plant in close proximity to nectar plants. Surveys were completed to determine presence of the wandering skipper in potential habitat areas within Famosa Slough, San Diego, California, both north and south of West Point Loma Blvd. Methods The surveys were conducted on August 27, 2010. ARIZONA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION ARIZONA WILDLIFE NOTEBOOK GARRY ROGERS Praise for Arizona Wildlife Notebook “Arizona Wildlife Notebook” by Garry Rogers is a comprehensive checklist of wildlife species existing in the State of Arizona. This notebook provides a brief description for each of eleven (11) groups of wildlife, conservation status of all extant species within that group in Arizona, alphabetical listing of species by common name, scientific names, and room for notes. “The Notebook is a statewide checklist, intended for use by wildlife watchers all over the state. As various individuals keep track of their personal observations of wildlife in their specific locality, the result will be a more selective checklist specific to that locale. Such information would be vitally useful to the State Wildlife Conservation Department, as well as to other local agencies and private wildlife watching groups. “This is a very well-documented snapshot of the status of wildlife species – from bugs to bats – in the State of Arizona. Much of it should be relevant to neighboring states, as well, with a bit of fine-tuning to accommodate additions and deletions to the list. “As a retired Wildlife Biologist, I have to say Rogers’ book is perhaps the simplest to understand, yet most comprehensive in terms of factual information, that I have ever had occasion to peruse. This book should become the default checklist for Arizona’s various state, federal and local conservation agencies, and the basis for developing accurate local inventories by private enthusiasts as well as public agencies. "Arizona Wildlife Notebook" provides a superb starting point for neighboring states who may wish to emulate Garry Rogers’ excellent handiwork. -

Nevada Butterflies and Their Biology to Forward Such for Inclusion in the Larger Study

AUSTIN Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89107 ABSTRACT. The distribution by county of the 189 species (over 300 taxa) of but terflies occurring in Nevada is presented along with a list of species incorrectly recorded for the state. There are still large areas which are poorly or not collected. Nevada continues as one of the remaining unknown areas in our knowledge of butterfly distribution in North America. Although a com prehensive work on the state's butterflies is in preparation, there is sufficient demand for a preliminary checklist to justify the following. It is hoped this will stimulate those who have any data on Nevada butterflies and their biology to forward such for inclusion in the larger study. Studies of Nevada butterflies are hampered by a paucity of resident collectors, a large number of mountain and valley systems and vast areas with little or no access. Non-resident collectors usually funnel into known and well worked areas, and, although their data are valu able, large areas of the state remain uncollected. Intensive collecting, with emphasis on poorly known areas, over the past seven years by Nevada State Museum personnel and associates has gone far to clarify butterfly distribution within the state. The gaps in knowledge are now more narrowly identifiable and will be filled during the next few sea sons. There is no all encompassing treatment of Nevada's butterfly fauna. The only state list is an informal recent checklist of species (Harjes, 1980). -

Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement Watdog Project Plumas National Forest Chapter 3. Affected Environment and Environmental Consequences 3.1 Changes Between the Final Environmental Impact Statement and the Final Supplemental Impact Statement Edits, minor changes, and clarification were completed throughout this chapter to augment the extent of the analysis and clarify information previously presented. Changes and supplementary analysis were accomplished to respond to agency and public review and comments on the Draft Supplemental EIS. Most notable of the changes include additional discussion on potential effects to: wildlife species under the No Action Alternative, snags and associated snag-dependent wildlife species, soils and California Wildlife Habitat Relationship size classes 4 and 5 landscape structure types linked to Old Forest-associated species (in particular the American marten and Pacific fisher). Clarification of design criteria and practices related to black oak stand treatment practices and down wood retention design features relative to size class were incorporated. Additionally, sawlog values were updated to reflect recent market data along with clarification of the Secure Rural School Self- Determination Act. This chapter summarizes the physical, biological, social, and economic environments of the project area and the effects of implementing each alternative presented in Chapter 2. It also presents the scientific and analytical basis for the comparison of alternatives. 3.1.1 Scope of the Analysis The existing condition describes the baseline condition against which environmental effects can be evaluated and from which progress toward the desired condition can be measured. Environmental consequences form the scientific and analytical basis for comparison of alternatives, including the proposed action, through compliance with Forest Plan standards and a summary of monitoring required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and National Forest Management Act. -

Contributed by: USDA NRCS National Plant Data Distichlis spicata is significant in the salt marshes, Center & the Louisiana State Office which provide nesting grounds for birds, fish and larvae of many species of marine invertebrate animals. As salt marsh plants decompose, their stored nutrients provide a steady source of food for clams, crabs, and fish. Wetland Restoration: The thick entangled roots of salt marsh plants acts as a guard between the ocean and the shore protecting the land from pollutants and other chemicals associated with runoff water. It is particularly useful in saline/alkaline wetlands. Medicine: Saltgrass is a respiratory allergenic plant that is offered by Miles Pharmaceutical and used by Florida physicians to treat respiratory allergies. Spice: Indians that inhabited California used saltgrass as a seasoning. They collected the salt crystals by threshing the blades. The seasoning provided is gray- green and said to have tasted like a salty dill pickle.
