Palm Springs Art Museum to Screen Free Films Every Thursday This Summer Ten FREE Foreign Films and Five Classic Comedies Will Be Screened Thursdays from May 31 – Sept. 6 April 25, 2012 (Palm Springs, CA) – The Palm Springs Art Museum will offer free films in its Annenberg Theater every Thursday at 6 p.m. from May 31 through Sept. 6. The first ten films will be the 2012 Global Lens series of films, organized by the Global Film Initiative. This series showcases films from countries not typically associated with filmmaking, and features young and upcoming directors. This year, the Global Lens series includes films from Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Turkey, and Rwanda. This is the fourth year the museum has screened the Global Lens series. Following these ten foreign films, the museum has teamed up with the Palm Springs International Film Society to offer five Classic Comedies. This is the second year that the museum and the Film Society have offered films as a joint partnership. There is no cost to attend the films and seats are available on a first come, first serve basis. The museum is open on Thursday nights with free admission between 4-8 p.m. and is always 75 degrees, which offers a great way to stay cool while enjoying high quality films. Maybe more so. “Casablanca” was never a great film, never a profound film. It’s merely the most beloved movie of all time. In its fifty-year history, it has resisted the transmogrifica- tion of its rich, reverberant icons into camp. It’s not about the demimondaines washing through Rick’s Café Americain – at the edge of the world, at the edge of hope – in 1941. Ultimately, it’s not even about Bogey and Ingrid Bergman sacrificing love for nobility. It’s about the hold movies have on us. That’s what makes it so powerful, so enduring. It is film’s analogue to Noel Coward’s famous line about the amazing potency of cheap music. Like few films before or since, it sums up Hollywood’s genius for recasting archetypes in big, bold, universally accessible strokes, for turning myth into pop culture. Zur Problematik cler Interpretation poputirer Kultur: Raoul Walshs Film The Roaring Twenties* Thomas Elsaesser/Winfried Fluck ABSTRACT The article wants to contribute to an ongoing debate about how to define the realistic or critical dimension of artefacts belonging to the realm of popular culture, in the present case, the commercial cinema. While discussions of this kind have often tended to separate out 'serious' films in which social problems are explicitly thematized from those where such issues are conspicuously absent or obfus cated, the present essay recognizes no such distinction merely on the grounds of sociological or ideolog ical transparency, but argues for a complex and differentiated model, which considers the artefact as a text constituted by a number of discourses whose determinants and structures, contrary to traditional aesthetics, do not necessarily reinforce each other to produce a coherent message. The example chosen is The Roaring Twenties (USA, 1939), directed for Warner Brothers by Raoul Walsh and starring Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Priscilla Lane. While the film clearly belongs to a well-established genre, the gangster film, whose themes and strategies it resumes in a ge<ture that self consciously closes an epoch, it is characterized by unusually explicit and numerous references to histori cal events and social data. However, a closer analysis of their function and place in the fiction shows that these apparently realistic and critical elements are only socially and ideologically significant, inso far as they enter into contact and tension with other levers of signification, where ideology is present only in a mediated form, as dramatically, emotionally, stylistically coded patterns of interaction be rween spectator and text. -

MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS comprises 112 feature films produced by MGM from the 1920s to the present, including musicals, thrillers, comedies, and melodramas. On view through September 30, the exhibition highlights a number of classics, as well as lesser-known films by directors who deserve wider recognition. MGM's films are distinguished by a high artistic level, with a consistent polish and technical virtuosity unseen anywhere, and by a roster of the most famous stars in the world -- Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, and Spencer Tracy. MGM also had under contract some of Hollywood's most talented directors, including Clarence Brown, George Cukor, Vincente Minnelli, and King Vidor, as well as outstanding cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, and editors. Exhibition highlights include Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1925), Victor Fleming's Gone Hith the Hind and The Wizard of Oz (both 1939), Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991).
