Jersey City is served by the PATH train. It offers a convenient and fast commute to Manhattan- taking approximately 15 minutes from most Jersey City locations.

Tribeca Film Festival

Spring, as one of my favorite times of the year; with the blooming of the flowers and the sounds of the sneezing allergenic NY commuter, is the Tribeca Film Festival. Two weeks of events highlighting one of the most popular pastimes, movie going, brings a normal Joe like me, to the world of artistic people. Easily one of the most convenient areas of NYC to explore, take advantage of an event like this and catch a movie or two. After screenings, many of the film crew, including the directors is around for Q&A. If you want to learn about a movie or a particular type of genre, the Festival offers discussions on a wide range to topics. You cannot find a better way to spend a few hours indoors as you avoid pollen by breathing filtered air thru a laugh or cry.

The Music Scene in Jersey City A Quarterly Music Column by Ross Remmel

New York City is a trademark location for the arts. When you think of live theater, you think of Broadway. When you think of art galleries, SoHo or Greenwich Village come to mind. However, the live music scene is stretched beyond just one or two neighborhoods. While there is so much history in Manhattan’s music venues, the arts had to outgrow the island and expand into new locations for live music performance. I would like to give a big THANK YOU to gentrification, because places like Jersey City can improve on their old theaters while new ones can open their doors. I’m going to mention a few of these live music spaces so that you can get an idea of what Jersey City has to offer for the listening ears.

First stop: The Landmark Loew’s Jersey, located at 54 Journal Square Plaza

Located at Journal Square, this historic theater opened its doors in 1929! With so much history of film and opera, the Loew’s Theater has had its ups and downs over the last century. The most recent renovation was in 1996 when the theater was reopened after a 10-year hiatus. Popular music groups to play here at Leow’s include Beck and The Decemberists. The Strokes even shot a music video here! The Strokes are one of the most prominent modern rock bands to call NYC their home and they chose to shoot their music video in Jersey City. The indie rock band and Yoko Ono collaborator, Yo La Tengo, is booked to play the theater this April.

Moving on: Monty Hall, located at 43 Montgomery Street

Turn your radio dial to 91.1FM in the NYC area and there is no predicting what you might hear. WFMU is a non-commercial and privately owned radio station that broadcasts from 43 Montgomery Street in Jersey City. The station that gives radio airway freedom to odd-ball DJ’s and passionate music fans is putting on a very eclectic selection of performers in their downstairs concert hall. Back in February, I jumped at the chance to see the Jersey-renowned indie rock band Screaming Females play at Monty Hall on the coldest night of the year. My first impression of this venue was a good one. Look for the paper portrait in the front window of the old talk show host that the Hall is named after and he’ll point you to the unlabeled entrance. Vinyl records and cheap beers are on sale in the front cavity that feels kind of like a living room. Even more homely was the CARPET flooring that covers the concert area! The performance area is narrow and the stage sits pretty low to the ground, so you may have to crane your neck to see the stage if the audience is packed in. However, large flat-screen TVs line the walls to give good angles of the band on stage. The sound quality was exceptionally loud enough to blast the high energy riffs of Screaming Females over the winter-coat-wearing audience that was jammed in the hall that night. The schedule of upcoming music is staggered over the upcoming months and it includes a great variety of affordably priced concerts ranging from 1970’s rock themed Sheer Mag to country alternatives The Waco Brothers.

Last Stop: Funhouse, located at 32 Center Street Here comes the wildcard of the bunch. Funhouse is one of the newest music venues to open in Jersey City since early 2015. It features the no-glam/do-it-yourself attitude of a once vacant auto body shop. Funhouse is founded and operated by the loud and abrasive punk rock group Crazy & The Brains. If you like your live music loud and dark, with the presence of young animals, this could be the place for you. For my final thought:

Jersey City is still being revitalized, particularly near the stations that run along the PATH mass transit system. You can expect to see more cultural arts and entertainment sites as this area gentrifies. As the young professional workforce occupies the freshened neighborhoods of Jersey City, you can expect the musical arts to tag along for the ride.
