His memorial service was held at Discover Church in Brooklyn Park on Dec. 19th, 2018. Jim wrote a book “Will the Chickens Be in Heaven with Grandma” about his life growing up on Territorial Road in Maple Grove. He was active in the Maple Grove Historical Preservation Society. Jim was born to Edward and Elizabeth Weber in Maple Grove, MN on June 8th, 1932. He grew up on the family farm along with his siblings Ed, Lilian and Barbara.     MARTIN McLEOD AND THE MINNESOTA VALLEY' As the winter of 1836 settled down upon Minnesota, a struggling band of adventurers broke a lonesome path from Lake Superior to the Red River of the North. Their leader, James Dickson, had visions of a fantastic kingdom some­ where in the West over which he would rule. His motives and objectives faded away with the wild obsession that pos­ sessed him, and now little is known of his chimerical project. Among his followers was one Martin McLeod, a young man of twenty-three who had given up his clerkship in a Mont­ real store, bade farewell to home and friends, and turned his face toward the hope-filled West. Day by day as this youth sought rest from the battle with the trail, his numbed fingers found time to record the stages of the journey or his reflections on the strangeness of fortune. His memorable diary reveals little of the motives that influenced him and his comrades, but it is filled with the spirit of conquering en­ durance that carried them through the wilderness of the Chippewa." With the close of the year came the end of the Dickson schemes and soon the members of the expedition began to scatter, leaving the Red River colony, where they had rested for several weeks. McLeod, accompanied by two of his com­ rades and guided by Pierre Bottineau, the famous guide of the Northwest, started on February 26, 1837, for St. Peter's at the mouth of the Minnesota River, a journey of " 750 miles ... on foot."     54 History of North Dakota CHAPTER 4 Indian, Métis, and White in the Red River Valley THE RED RIVER COUNTRY was part of a remote region at the center of the North American continent. West of the river was a vast grassland, the Northern Great Plains, supporting immense herds of buffalo; north of the prairies, stretching northwest of Hudson Bay, lay the fur forest, producing fine peltries. Three waterways led into the area: The Hudson Bay–Hayes River-Lake Winnipeg route; the St. Lawrence–Ottawa–Great Lakes–Lake of the Woods route; and the Mississippi–Missouri route. These connected it with the outside world, with centers of population and commerce in the eastern United States and western Europe. Outsiders came by way of the Bay and the Great Lakes to exploit the fur forests; they came by way of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to exploit the buffalo plains. Their aim was to make the region a colonial hinterland of some outside center of trade. As they struggled for supremacy, they made the Indian dependent upon their trade goods; they debauched The Indian, Métis, and White in the Red River Valley 55 him with liquor; they married Indian women and produced a new race of mixed blood, the métis; and they established an agricultural settlement, the Selkirk colony, on the Red River of the North. For many years the fine peltries of the fur forest went to English and European markets. Eventually, the Hudson's Bay Company (coming from England by way of the Bay) beat out the North West Company (coming from Montreal by way of the Great Lakes).

The trail of the buffalo runs through the whole story of the American frontier. The " long hunters " coming down the west­ ern slopes of the AUeghanies picked up the buffalo " trace " worn dusty by the thousands of hooves. A century later the trail played out among the sagebrush in the dry creek beds of eastern Montana, where the fragments of the great northern herd faced the rifles of the hunters for the last time. Indian, buckskin-clad Kentuckian, prairie pioneer, plainsman, hide-hunter, and sportsman followed the mighty hunt as it rolled westward. Around countless camp fires, hunters, red and white, recounted their experiences; and their tales, like those of all hunters, did not diminish with the telling. Travelers and sportsmen from the East and Europe repeated them and added to them their own adventures. To bring the more significant of all these tales together, to place them in their proper setting, and to relate them to the wider aspects of the westward movement is a worth-while task. In his book The Hunting of the Buffalo, E. Douglas Branch has, to a considerable degree, accomplished this. True, nothing has been added to our general knowledge of the subject; indeed there is no evidence to show that the author had any intention of making any definitive contribution to western history. That my mother was born on the Rolls of the Chippewa tribe, a full fledged member known as Mrs. Louis Des Julais Minock, nee Francoise Bottineau, a beneficiary of the 7th Clause of the Second Article of the Treaty of September 30, 1854, whereby she received Scrip. No. 162, for 80 acres (See: Letter of the 9,1869, to the Secretary of the Interior, O. H. Browning, Page 240, Scrip. Book). Also see Schedule A. of said Script-book on Page 23, or the Indian Office letter dated March 9, 1872, which certifies that among the list of certificates issued for Scrip. was Louis and Frances Dejarlau, my own mother and father.     FRONTIER FOOD^ The influx of settlers into Minnesota Territory in the fif­ ties led to a significant increase In the consumption of food products, and a problem that demanded the consideration of both the father and the mother in a pioneer home was that of providing food for the family. Before leaving their old homes, many of the settlers had read letters from lumbermen, fur traders, and earlier settlers who gave en­ couraging descriptions of the bountiful providence of nature in the Minnesota country. "Pigeons can be had for the shooting," wrote one pioneer woman, " and fish swim ashore to be caught." ^ Nevertheless, some cautious housewives whose resources permitted the purchase of groceries took with them to their new homes some staple supplies to tide them over the first few months on the frontier. By using these sparingly and supplementing them with wild fruit and game, the pioneer family had enough food to last until the first harvest. The demands o7 the new settlers In the Minnesota region opened a profitable trade for local grocers, and dealers In river towns farther south negotiated for the shipment of food into the territory.
