These tribes include the Ojibwe, confederated Sacs and Foxes, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Ioway, Ottowa, and Potawatomi. As intertribal warfare disrupted the peace between these tribes, it also disrupted the plans of many European settlers who had wanted to live, farm, hunt, mineral mine, and trade in the Midwest. One can see evidence of this disruption by visiting treaties from the early nineteenth century as well as accounts from various Indian Agents from this time. Several treaties -

Hedin Editor, MLHP On November 27, 1900, Senator Cushman Kellogg Davis died in St. Paul at age sixty-two. He was governor of the state from 1875 to 1877. He was elected U. S. Senator by the state legislature in 1887 and re-elected in 1893 and 1899. Memorial services were held at a joint session of the Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate on February 18, 1901, and before the Minnesota Supreme Court on April 2, 1901. They follow. They have been reformatted. Several long paragraphs have been divided for ease of reading. The photograph of Davis on the first page is from Autobiographies and Portraits of the President, Cabinet, Supreme Court and Fifty-fifth Congress (1898), and that on page 17 is from Frank Holmes, et al., 4 Minnesota in Three Centuries (1908). 2 MINNESOTA SUPREME COURT 81 Minnesota Reports xxiii - xxxv (1901) PROCEEDINGS lN MEMORY OF SENATOR CUSHMAN K. CHAPTER TWELVE MAC VICAR, PUTNAM, WILLITS 1880-1885 Malcolm Mac Vicar, 7880- 7887 When Principal Estabrook resigned in May of 1880, the State Board felt that special conditions made the selection of a successor one of exceptional importance. "The school was to a certain extent in a transition state," they said, "and it needed most of all one who could bring to its admini stration large experience, great executive ability, high scholarshir, and honest sympathy with the progressive spirit of the institution." They chose Malcolm Mac Vicar, principal of the Normal School at Potsdam, New York,2 who took over the reins on November 12. Malcolm Mac Vicar was unique among the heads of Normal; he was the only one to be foreign-born. He came with his family at the age of six from Argylshire, Scotland, to a farm near Chatham, Ontario, Canada. He entered Knox College, in Toronto, to study for the Presbyterian ministery but within a short time was ordained in the Baptist ministry. He transferred to the University of Rochester, New York, where he earned the baccalaureate and master's degrees. At the time that Normal offered him its headship he had gained considerable administrative experience. As principal of the Brock port Collegiate Institute (1863-1867) in Brockport, New York, he became the first principal of the Brockport State Normal School when the Collegiate Institute was transformed (1867). Earlier, he had attracted the attention of the Regents of the University of the State of New York and at their invitation had read a paper at their convocation of 1865 which proved to be a first step towards the 121 122 A History of Eastern adoption of "Regents' Examinations" in the academies. -

At 6:00 AM on July 7, with a ceremonial parade of the library’s earliest accessions, the two-month project of moving the books commenced. Leading the trail of librarians was the head librarian, Andrew Keogh, and the head of the serials cataloguing department, Grace Pierpont Fuller. Fuller was the descendant of James Pierpont, one of the principal founders of Yale, and was carrying the Latin Bible given by her ancestor during the fabled 1701 donation of books that signaled the foundation of the Collegiate School. -

CHAIRMEN OF SENATE STANDING COMMITTEES [Table 5-3] 1789–present INTRODUCTION The following is a list of chairmen of all standing Senate committees, as well as the chairmen of select and joint committees that were precursors to Senate committees. (Other special and select committees of the twentieth century appear in Table 5-4.) Current standing committees are highlighted in yellow. The names of chairmen were taken from the Congressional Directory from 1816–1991. Four standing committees were founded before 1816. They were the Joint Committee on ENROLLED BILLS (established 1789), the joint Committee on the LIBRARY (established 1806), the Committee to AUDIT AND CONTROL THE CONTINGENT EXPENSES OF THE SENATE (established 1807), and the Committee on ENGROSSED BILLS (established 1810). The names of the chairmen of these committees for the years before 1816 were taken from the Annals of Congress. This list also enumerates the dates of establishment and termination of each committee. These dates were taken from Walter Stubbs, Congressional Committees, 1789–1982: A Checklist (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1985). There were eleven committees for which the dates of existence listed in Congressional Committees, 1789–1982 did not match the dates the committees were listed in the Congressional Directory. The committees are: ENGROSSED BILLS, ENROLLED BILLS, EXAMINE THE SEVERAL BRANCHES OF THE CIVIL SERVICE, Joint Committee on the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, LIBRARY, PENSIONS, PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, RETRENCHMENT, REVOLUTIONARY CLAIMS, ROADS AND CANALS, and the Select Committee to Revise the RULES of the Senate. For these committees, the dates are listed according to Congressional Committees, 1789– 1982, with a note next to the dates detailing the discrepancy. -
