The Dramaturgy of Appropriation: How Canadian Playwrights Use and Abuse Shakespeare and Chekhov by James Stuart McKinnon A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama University of Toronto © Copyright by James McKinnon 2010 The Dramaturgy of Appropriation: How Canadian Playwrights Use and Abuse Shakespeare and Chekhov James Stuart McKinnon Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama University of Toronto 2010 Abstract Both theatre and drama were imported to Canada from European colonizing nations, and as such the canonical master-texts of European drama, particularly the works of Shakespeare, have always occupied a prominent place in Canadian theatre. This presents a challenge for living Canadian playwrights, whose most revered role model is also their most dangerous competition, and whose desire to represent the spectrum of contemporary Canadian experience on stage is often at odds with the preferences of many producers and spectators for the ―classics.‖ Since the 1990s, a number of Canadian playwrights have attempted to challenge the role of canonical plays and the values they represent by appropriating and critiquing them in plays of their own, creating a body of work which disturbs conventional distinctions between ―adaptations‖ and ―originals.‖ This study describes and analyzes the adaptive dramaturgies used by recent Canadian playwrights to appropriate canonical plays, question the privileged place they occupy in Canadian culture, expose the exclusionary hierarchies they legitimate, and claim centre stage for Canadian perspectives which have hitherto been waiting in the wings. It examines how playwrights challenge, usurp, or exploit the cultural capital of the canon by ―re-citing‖ old plays ii in new works, how they or their producers attempt to frame the reception of their plays in order to address cultural biases against adaptation, and how audiences respond. -

Lorena Gale was a huge talent in a small package. Just 5’ 1”, this smart, beautiful, multi-faceted dynamo had great presence on and offstage, playing doctors and DA’s, police lieutenants and military officers, Goneril, Hecuba, the Acid Queen in Tommy, and the powerful priestess Elosha in Battlestar Galactica. One of the busiest actresses in Canada, with 126 entries on imdb.com as well as dozens more theatrical and voice-over credits on her resumé, she was also an important dramatist whose plays Angélique and Je me souviens contributed significantly to the contemporary Canadian theatre. Lorena was candid and outspoken. The commanding force of her personality and the probing, no-nonsense intellect behind those smouldering dark brown eyes, along with her grace and courage, were the qualities for which she will be best remembered by those who had the privilege to know her, the same qualities that made her such a formidable friend and social presence. The Union of BC Performers got her just right when it established the Lorena Gale Woman of Distinction Award this spring, citing “her enduring commitment to power, dignity, intelligence and truth.” A third-generation Canadian born and raised in Montreal, Lorena lived her last 20 years in Vancouver. She dramatized her love-hate relationship with both cities in Je me souviens, her autobiographical solo play subtitled “Memories of an expatriate Anglophone Montréalaise Québecoise exiled in Canada.” Nominated for the Governor General’s Award for Drama in 2002, the play explores cultural and linguistic tensions, particularly the reality of being marginalized in Jacques Parizeau’s pure laine Québec. -

Rhys Owain Thomas Student Number 4566211 Film (Research) R1W62012 Abstract This thesis examines the foregrounding of a particular type of liminal human protagonist in contemporary American television Science Fiction. These protagonists, which I have termed the ‘unliving,’ exist in-between the realms of life and death, simultaneously both alive and dead whilst occupying an indistinct middle- ground. I examine how the liminal nature of these protagonists has been used as a means of exploring various aspects of personal identity during the early years of the twenty-first century. Developing anthropologist Victor Witter Turner’s work, in which he argued for the universal occurrence of liminality in cultural, political, economic and social contexts, I argue that the use of liminal protagonists in American television Science Fiction constitutes a demonstrable trend. Although they are to be found in ever-increasing numbers in (and outside) the genre, their growing presence and significance have yet to be properly discerned, studied and appreciated. What a wild and strange time we are living in. Like the world’s fiercest roller coaster, we have gone through many ups and many downs as we look towards reaching a year in this new reality. But through it all, we are reminded of the people, the stories, and the shared moments that give us strength to move forward and hope for the time we will be together again, in the everyday, and in the theatre. Until then, we are so proud to offer this special event that showcases new pieces and playwrights and new productions in Theatre for Young Audiences. For the second year, we are grateful to provide a space for emerging playwrights to continue the development of new works in TYA and would like to thank Andrea Romaldi, Dean Patrick Fleming and the National Theatre School for their partnership in this initiative. We can’t wait to hear the teens’ responses to the developing works of Jena Maclean (Until Tenth Grade) and Sarah Currie (The Borrowing Man): NTS graduating playwriting students. And, of course, we are so thankful to keep our far-reaching and flagship 2Play Tour alive during these times. Through our adapted live-streaming platform, we have supported our ability to reach schools and their communities in Eastern Canada, making new friends along the way. Already, The Little Mighty Superhero and Celestial Bodies have been seen by over 8,000 young people! Typically, we would be performing these shows to the public live in Montreal during the fest, but this year, we are excited to share these pieces in your home. -

Board Chair’s Message The 2008 / 2009 school year is now under way and, in my fourth year as your Chair, I continue to be inspired by the talented and committed members of the Board of Governors with whom I am hon- oured to serve. This past year our Board committees have been particularly active in their various responsibilities. Despite our Governance Committee being relatively recently established, we are making great strides in this area. The committee has been looking at best practices as identified by the Canadian Independent School community to ensure that SHS achieves excellence in all levels of governance. Through the leadership of Sally Hannon, our goal has been to maintain our unique school culture and enhance our Board’s effectiveness. Good governance practices allow us to make effective decisions with a focus on getting things done with the least amount of road blocks. This year marked the official close of our very successful “Discover the Future” capital campaign. This campaign led to the creation of The Discovery Centre which provides facility excellence in the areas of science, art, technology, and music. -
