We would like to hear from all of our Alumni as we cele- brate our 15th year. We hope to have a reunion this spring or summer and would like BluesEd alumni (and alumni parents too!) contact us so we have your current email ad- dress. Please send us an email at [email protected]. BluesEd, the Blues Society of Omaha’s youth performance program, is gearing up for our 15th Season. In honor of our Kevin & Chris Shouse 15th year we have a special logo highlighting the length of BluesEd Directors time BluesEd has been wowing audiences. We are in the process of registering stu- dents for auditions to be held in February. Vocalists and instrumentalists that are pro- ficient in their instrument and are ready to perform in a band are requested to register on our website: www.BluesEd.com. 2016 promises to be packed with performance opportunities for our bands at many great area venues. Auditions will be held Feb. 21. Audition reg- istrations close Feb. 18. Why is BluesEd different than other youth development programs? 1) BluesEd started in 2001, making it the oldest (and most experienced) of its kind in Omaha. 2) We have four clinicians who work with each band and are working, well-known musicians in the Omaha/Midwest region. 3) We have 5-6 performance bands a sea- son. Our season runs from April - August, not just a couple of weeks in the summer. 4) Our bands play at multiple venues and multiple times during the season. Not just one season ending performance. 5) The Blues Society of Omaha is our spon- sor and provides financial, educational and moral support to our bands. 6) Tuition for BluesEd is nominal and in- cludes professional instruction, perfor- mance opportunities and much more. 7) Some of our former students have gone on to work professionally in the music industry BLUES NEWS • BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 5 KELLEY HUNT Thursday, February 11th @ 6 pm • $15 • 21st Saloon, 96th & L Street, Omaha, NE Kansas City-based, internationally acclaimed Roots, Blues thing’s going to be okay after and Americana singer songwriter Kelley Hunt will kick off all.” said Blues Music Mag- Valentine’s weekend by returning to Omaha for a show azine; “Kelley Hunt soars on Thursday, February 11th at 6pm at The 21st Saloon. her new release and invites Kelley Hunt will arrive in Omaha having just stepped off the listeners along for the ride.” ship a few weeks earlier from her 4th featured appearance said Cashbox; “It is not very on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise and still rid- often that we receive an al- ing a wave of accolades for her 6th release “The Beautiful bum that makes us sit down Bones” which launched in mid-2014 and has been univer- and really listen; like, grabs sally hailed by press, radio and fans on both sides of the us and demands our full at- Atlantic as the best work of her career.

PRODUCED BY RAY MANZAREK Originally released April 1980 Originally released May 1981 Originally released July 1982 Originally released September 1983 Frank Gargani Debbie Leavitt Power... Passion... Poetry! Attack the world. Let’s do some damage. What a band. Four monsters of skin. My favorite rockers of the then time. John Doe - Mr. Handsome - of the deep rich voice, the hard, strong jaw, the angular bass stance and the hot/cool lyrics. Their harmonies - some would say Schoenberg - his partner Exene, of the wailing scream in the night, the clear eyed pinning of American failings, the fine words of Diana Bonebrake love and booze and madness in the midnight dawn of Los Angeles. “Johny Hit and Run Paulene...” and he’s got a sterilized hypo filled with a sex-machine drug, and he only has 24 hours to shoot all Paulenes between the legs. So get busy, boy. And he does. Listen to those words! That naughty, naughty Johny. I love ‘em. And Exene’s “The World’s a Mess, it’s in My Kiss.” I just love that crazy combination: World - Mess - Kiss. And Billy Zoom on guitar, or is that at least 3 or 4 guitars. How does he do it? It’s so massive, so sharp, so bright, so fucking LOUD!!! And he is so silver smooth and cool. Effortless fingering, impeccable on the frets. Doesn’t he ever make a mistake? Is he a flesh and blood Valhalla guitar god? Yeahhh! And who is that madman beating the living shit out those drums? Ladies and Gentleman... D.

Printing courtesy of Razorcake Press, Razorcake.org he Gun Club is one of Los Angeles’s greatest bands. Lead singer, guitarist, and figurehead Jeffrey Lee Pierce fits in easily with Tthe genius songwriting of Arthur Lee (Love), Chris Hillman (Byrds), and John Doe and Exene (X). Unfortunately, neither he nor his band achieved the notoriety of his fellow luminary Angelinos. From 1979 to 1996, Jeffrey manned the Gun Club ship through thick and mostly thin. Understandably, the initial Fire of Love and Miami lineup of Ward Dotson (guitar), Rob Ritter (bass), Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/ guitar) and Terry Graham (drums) remains the most beloved; setting the spooky, blues-punk template for future Gun Club releases. At the time of its release, Fire of Love was heralded by East Coast critics as one of the best albums of 1981.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
