Please send us an email at [email protected]. BluesEd, the Blues Society of Omaha’s youth performance program, is gearing up for our 15th Season. In honor of our Kevin & Chris Shouse 15th year we have a special logo highlighting the length of BluesEd Directors time BluesEd has been wowing audiences. We are in the process of registering stu- dents for auditions to be held in February. Vocalists and instrumentalists that are pro- ficient in their instrument and are ready to perform in a band are requested to register on our website: www.BluesEd.com. 2016 promises to be packed with performance opportunities for our bands at many great area venues. Auditions will be held Feb. 21. Audition reg- istrations close Feb. 18. Why is BluesEd different than other youth development programs? 1) BluesEd started in 2001, making it the oldest (and most experienced) of its kind in Omaha. 2) We have four clinicians who work with each band and are working, well-known musicians in the Omaha/Midwest region. 3) We have 5-6 performance bands a sea- son. Our season runs from April - August, not just a couple of weeks in the summer. 4) Our bands play at multiple venues and multiple times during the season. Not just one season ending performance. 5) The Blues Society of Omaha is our spon- sor and provides financial, educational and moral support to our bands. 6) Tuition for BluesEd is nominal and in- cludes professional instruction, perfor- mance opportunities and much more. 7) Some of our former students have gone on to work professionally in the music industry BLUES NEWS • BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 5 KELLEY HUNT Thursday, February 11th @ 6 pm • $15 • 21st Saloon, 96th & L Street, Omaha, NE Kansas City-based, internationally acclaimed Roots, Blues thing’s going to be okay after and Americana singer songwriter Kelley Hunt will kick off all.” said Blues Music Mag- Valentine’s weekend by returning to Omaha for a show azine; “Kelley Hunt soars on Thursday, February 11th at 6pm at The 21st Saloon. her new release and invites Kelley Hunt will arrive in Omaha having just stepped off the listeners along for the ride.” ship a few weeks earlier from her 4th featured appearance said Cashbox; “It is not very on the Legendary Cruise and still rid- often that we receive an al- ing a wave of accolades for her 6th release “The Beautiful bum that makes us sit down Bones” which launched in mid-2014 and has been univer- and really listen; like, grabs sally hailed by press, radio and fans on both sides of the us and demands our full at- Atlantic as the best work of her career. “If there truly is a tention. Hunt’s music has been described as a gumbo of roots music styles influenced by blues, roots R&B, gospel, soul, the pi- ano vernaculars of Kansas City, St. Louis and New Orleans - all framed by her unique identity as a songwriter, crossing roots boundaries and at times taking on social and political issues. It’s all delivered with superior skills as a singer and keyboardist. She has a simpler take, however. “All the stuff I grew up listening to - things my parents and siblings turned me onto and things I sought out and connected with - it all just went in the way it went in and comes out the way it comes out. It’s an organic process for me. Sometimes a song or song idea bubbles to the surface seemingly on its own and I have no idea why, I just run with it,” said Hunt. In addition to a list of favorite traditional artists, Hunt cites as a young girl hearing the sound of her mother’s and grand- mother’s voices (both jazz/gospel singers, her grandmother having toured with a gospel choir out of New Orleans for a while) among her most powerful influences. There were also pivotal piano lessons at age 10 from former Vaudeville / boogie woogie specialist Mary Burke Norton in Emporia, KS where the family lived at the time. According to Hunt, Norton was a big-hearted, eminently talented caricature - bright red wig, cigarette often dangling from her mouth, gravelly voice and an eye for talent, who celebrated Hunt’s early ability to play by ear, built on it, taught her boogie-woogie and how to read music. “She was my musical angel and, man, did she have an attitude,” said Hunt. “But thank God for her - she made me the piano player I am today,” she added.
