ROMANS AND BATAVIANS: REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS AT THE IMPERIAL FRONTIER WillemJ.H. Willems The Batavians are certainly among the most well-known tribes in the Roman empire, both in antiquity and today. Their relation with the Romans has been the subject of much scholarly discussion in the past and the present, but most of this discussion was based primarily on literary data. With the exception of the work of Modderman (1949, 1951), however, no effort has been made to substanriate the archaeological data-base of the Batavian tribal area in the eastern part of the Dutch Rhine delta. Fortunately, in 1978 a detailed study of all archaeological evidence of the central part of this area could be starled. On the basis of the preliminary results of this project, it is now pos- sible to examine some of the archaeological correlates of the acculturation processes which operated here from the Late Iron Age to the Early Middle Ages (c. 250 B.C. - A.D. 750). But first it is necessary to examine some of the theoretical concepts invol- ved. Since the 1954 SSRC Seminar, acculturation is often defined as culture change that is initiated by the conjunction of two or more autonomous cultural systems. In our case it is evident that the differences between the cultural systems involved are very large in- deed (below p. 112 and Roymans this vol.). On the one hand is a system which may be described as a state, while on the other hand we are dealing with a society at a much lower level of social complexity. -

A Kink in the Cosmography?
A Kink in the Cosmography? One vital clue for deciphering Roman-era names is that the order of names in the Ravenna Cosmography is geographically logical. The unknown cosmographer appears to have taken names off maps and/or itineraries that were tolerably accurate, not up to modern cartographic standards, but good enough for Roman soldiers to plan their travels logically. An apparent exception to this logic occurs near Hadrian’s Wall, where RC’s sequence of names runs thus: ... Bereda – Lagubalium – Magnis – Gabaglanda – Vindolande – Lincoigla ... The general course is clear enough, looping up from the south onto the Stanegate road (which was built earlier than the actual Wall) and then going back south. Lagubalium must be Carlisle and Vindolande must be Chesterholm, so it seems obvious that Magnis was at Carvoran and Gabaglanda was at Castlesteads. The problem is that Carvoran lies east of Castlesteads, which would make RC backtrack and put a kink in its path across the ground. Most people will simply say “So what? Cosmo made a mistake. Or his map was wrong. Or the names were written awkwardly on his map.” But this oddity prompted us to look hard at the evidence for names on and around Hadrian’s Wall, as summarised in a table on the following page. How many of the name-to-place allocations accepted by R&S really stand up to critical examination? One discovery quickly followed (a better location for Axelodunum), but many questions remain. For a start, what was magna ‘great’ about the two places that share the name Magnis, Carvoran and Kenchester? Did that name signify something such as ‘headquarters’ or ‘supply base’ in a particular period? Could another site on the Stanegate between Carlisle and Castlesteads be the northern Magnis? The fort at Chapelburn (=Nether Denton, NY59576460) would reduce the size of the kink, but not eliminate it. -

In Britain, as in their other provinces, the Romans constructed a comprehensive network of paved trunk roads (i.e. surfaced highways) during their nearly four centuries of occupation (43 - 410 AD). This article focuses on the ca. 2,000 mi (3,200 km) of Roman roads in Britain shown on the Ordnance Survey's Map of Roman Britain.[1] This contains the most accurate and up-to-date layout of certain and probable routes that is readily available to the general public. The pre-Roman Britons used mostly unpaved trackways for their communications, including very ancient ones running along elevated ridges of hills, such as the South Downs Way, now a public long-distance footpath. -

It is useful, but the thinking now seems slightly outdated – the authors place more emphasis on the Roman state as a dominant and even coercive power in effecting cultural change in the provinces than most scholars do today. -

The two most common motifs featured on these tombstones are the rider relief motifs and the totenmahl motifs. Aspects of both the reliefs and the inscribed epitaphs are distinctly characteristic of the Roman military. Throughout the history of the Roman Empire, men in the auxiliary cavalry units were recruited from non-Roman allied tribes. -

This negative perception of Germania – the modern Netherlands and Germany – lay behind the reluctance of Rome’s great military commanders to tame its immense wilderness. Caius Iulius Caesar famously threw a wooden pontoon bridge across the River Rhine (Rhenus) in just ten days, not once but twice, in 55 and 53 bc. The next Roman general to do so was Marcus Agrippa, in 39/38 bc or 19/18 bc. However, none of these missions was for conquest, but in response to pleas for assistance from an ally of the Romans, the Germanic nation of the Ubii. It was not until the reign of Caesar Augustus that a serious attempt was made to annex the land beyond the wide river and transform it into a province fit for Romans to live in.
