University of Cape Town BOLUS LIBRARY 1 ABSTRACT The perennation of orchids is poorly understood, in particular that of the Orchidoidae. The understanding of perennation in the Orchidoidae is important because the root-stem tuberoid .is used as the one character defining the Orchidoidae as a monophyletic group. The root-stem tuberoid has never been examined for variation before. This project focuses on perennial growth in the Diseae in order to study the structbre and function of the root stem tuberoid in relation tp other organs and to contribute to the understanding of Orchidoid phylogeny. , INTRODUCTION Host te1perate monocotyledons have evolved underground resting or perennating organs for the climatically unfavourable season (Holttum 1955). A period of underground existence may allow a plant to escape unfavourable conditions, to counter environmental uncertainty, and to build reserves for flowering episodes (Calvo 1990). This is especially evident in the temperate members of the Orchidaceae and is made possible through sympodial growth· (Withnerj1974). Not .all temperate orchids have a resting period although they do have sympodial growth and do perennate. -

Conclusion Acknowledgement Bibliography Biographical Sketches Summary Data on the biological active substances and therapeutical properties of more than 131 medicinal and aromatic (spicy-aromatic) plants widely distributed and frequently used in Azerbaijan are given in this chapter. The majority of the described species contain flavonoids (115 sp.), vitamin C (84 sp.), fatty oils (78 sp.), tannins (77 sp.), alkaloids (74 sp.) and essential oils (73 sp.). A prevalence of these biological active substances defines the broad spectrum of therapeutic actions of the described plants. So, significant number of species possess antibacterial (69 sp.), diuretic (60 sp.), wound healing (51 sp.), styptic (46 sp.) and expectorant (45 sp.) peculiarities. The majority of the species are used in curing of gastrointestinal (89 sp.), bronchopulmonary (61 sp.), dermatovenerologic (61 sp.), nephritic (55 sp.) and infectious (52 sp.) diseases, also for treatment of festering -

Butterfly Conservation Upper Thames Branch Silver-washed Fritillary Report 2006-7 Mick Campbell Many thanks to everyone who sent in sightings of Silver-washed Fritillary, in particular Chris Brown who monitored Crowsley Park Wood on a daily basis throughout the season, capturing the timing of different events, such as pairing and roosting habits of this beautiful butterfly. From the left: Silver-washed Fritillary male on bramble showing the distinctive black streaks of scent-scales near the middle of the forewing; female on buddleia; and the valezina form of the female (photos © Peter Hall, David Redhead & Tony Croft respectively) The Silver-washed Fritillary is a strong, fast flying woodland species, preferring mixed woodland with an open canopy, sunny glades and rides, with bramble as the favoured nectar source. They lay their eggs on oaks and rough-barked conifers where their foodplant of violet is present nearby. Interestingly, a report was also received from Jan Haseler in 2007 of a female appearing to oviposit on alder. Silver-washed Fritillary has been expanding its range in recent years and in the hot summer of 2006 it was particularly successful, with ‘wanderers’ turning up in 12 gardens, compared with 3 sightings in gardens during the 2007 season. Phylogenetic relationships within this tribe have been studied previously using only nuclear ribosomal DNA (nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer, nrITS). However, different parts of the phylogenetic tree in these analyses were weakly supported, and integrating information from different plant genomes is clearly necessary in orchids, where reticulate evolution events are putatively common. The aims of this study were to: (1) obtain a well-supported and dated phylogenetic hypothesis for tribe Orchideae, (ii) assess appropriateness of recent nomenclatural changes in this tribe in the last decade, (3) detect possible examples of reticulate evolution and (4) analyse in a temporal context evolutionary trends for subtribe Orchidinae with special emphasis on pollination systems. -

The spontaneous medicinal flora of Zlatar Mountain was studied in the aim of realizing the possibilities of its sustainable use for the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. The special attention was paid to genera Orchis, Ophrys, Plathanthera, Gimnadenia, etc. from the orchid family (Orchidaceae) of which salep is made (Tuber salep). Salep is a typical mucous drug (contains over 50% of mucus), which is very beneficial and useful. The primary role of salep is to heal and strengthen the organism and urge the sexual and every other biological ability. Orchids of which salep is made (Orchis coriophora, Orchis laxiflora, Orchis morio, Orchis mascula, Orchis pallens, Orchis purpurea, Orchis simia, Orchis tridentata and Orchis ustulata) are to be found on numerous habitats of Zlatar (in the bright forests, clearing areas and on forest meadows). -

[Received 01.11.2016; Revised & accepted 04.11.2016; Published 31.12.2016] Abstract We report a find of the rare orchid Ponerorchis nana (King & Pantling) Soó (Orchidaceae) from Lachung, Sikkim, and compare it with the very different species P. chusua with which it has previously been associated. Ponerorchis nana is currently known from East Sikkim Eastwards to Central Arunachal Pradesh, and grows on moss-covered cliffs and tree trunks. It seems closely related to Amitostigma pathakianum. Key words: Ponerorchis nana, Identity, Reestablished species Ponerorchis nana (King & Pantling) Soó (Orchidaceae) is a much misunderstood taxon. In Flora of Bhutan (Pearce & Cribb 2002) and on most websites (see references: web-resources) P. nana is said to be either very similar to or synonymous with P. chusua, and the epithet has been used for both narrow-leaved and broad-leaved small individuals of P. Chusua (e.g. Adhikari 2008). The root of the confusion started long lack when King & Pantling (1898) originally described P. nana as a variety of P. chusua and even hinted at intermediates. However, Ponerorchis nana (Figures 1, 2) is very different from P. chusua (Figure 3), in morphology as well as in ecology, and no intermediates are known. Pantling’s original drawing (King & Pantling 1898) shows most of its distinctive features: small and delicate growth; a single linear arcuate channeled leaf with shortly clasping base; 1- to 2-flowered (very rarely 3-flowered) inflorescence; flowers less than half the size of those of P. -

Dry valleys have cut down into landscape, exposing the chalk, whilst elevated ridges are overlain with clay with flints. • Rolling and undulating topography, with steep slopes contrasting with flatter valley ridges. A smooth and sweeping landform. • Mixed agricultural land use, comprising rough grazing, paddock, pasture and arable farmland. Hedgerows and wooden fencing define boundaries. • Blocks of woodland are dispersed, particularly along the upper slopes of valleys and along ridgelines. • Relatively low density of settlement linearly dispersed along roads, and often spread along ridges. Comprising small villages and individual farmsteads, often with a strong historic character. • Crossed by a comprehensive network of footpaths. Roads are generally rural and quiet, with little traffic and follow linearly along the valley and ridge landform. • Extensive views up and down valleys and from the higher aspect of the ridges, contrasting with areas of woodland, with an intimate and secluded character. • The repetitive undulations of the topography and extensive farmland land cover, contributes to a uniform and simple landscape pattern. Species Action Plan for Green-Winged Orchid: (Orchis Morio) in Buckinghamshire
Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Biodiversity Action Plan Species Action Plans Species Action Plans National Species Action Plans 8.1 Biodiversity: The UK Steering Group Report (DETR, 1995) originally listed 416 priority species for which national Species Action Plans would be written. At that time 116 had already been written and 300 remained. In addition, a further 1,250 species were identified as being of ‘conservation concern’. The priority list was reviewed in 1997and in 2007. After the 2007 revision the total number of BAP priority species was set at 1149. This list is available in Biodiversity Reporting and Information Group Report on the Species and Habitat Review 2007. 8.2 The four scientific criteria that were used to select the UK BAP species in the 2007 review were; • International threat • International responsibility & moderate decline in the UK • Marked decline in the UK • Other important factors – where quantitative data on decline are inadequate but there is convincing evidence of extreme threat Local Species Action Plans for Buckinghamshire 8.3 On the publication of the Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes BAP in 2000 it was planned that every species present in Bucks for which there is a national SAP or Conservation Statement, would eventually have a local SAP or Conservation Statement. SAPs would also be written for species which may not be considered a national priority, but which are threatened or declining within the County, such as green- winged orchid. 8.4 The following Plans were produced for species within Buckinghamshire. y Chiltern Gentian y Green-winged Orchid y Striped Lychnis Moth As Latin names were used in the original publication of the action plans for Chiltern gentian, green-winged orchid and striped lychnis moth, they have been retained in the following part of the document.
