The plant lists were created for the first edition of the Manual in 1993 before information was available about invasive qualities of certain recommended plants contained in those lists (Norway Maple, Bradford Pear, etc.). Additionally, diseases and pests have made some other plants undesirable (Ash, Austrian Pine, etc.). The Howard County General Plan 2000 and subsequent environmental and community planning publications such as the Route 1 and Route 40 Manuals and the Green Neighborhood Design Guidelines have promoted the desirability of using native plants in landscape plantings. Therefore, this policy seeks to update the Recommended Plant Lists by identifying invasive plant species and disease or pest ridden plants for their removal and prohibition from further planting in Howard County and to add other available native plants which have desirable characteristics for street tree or general landscape use for inclusion on the Recommended Plant Lists. The understanding of perennation in the Orchidoidae is important because the root-stem tuberoid .is used as the one character defining the Orchidoidae as a monophyletic group. The root-stem tuberoid has never been examined for variation before. This project focuses on perennial growth in the Diseae in order to study the structbre and function of the root stem tuberoid in relation tp other organs and to contribute to the understanding of Orchidoid phylogeny. , INTRODUCTION Host te1perate monocotyledons have evolved underground resting or perennating organs for the climatically unfavourable season (Holttum 1955). A period of underground existence may allow a plant to escape unfavourable conditions, to counter environmental uncertainty, and to build reserves for flowering episodes (Calvo 1990). This is especially evident in the temperate members of the Orchidaceae and is made possible through sympodial growth· (Withnerj1974). Not .all temperate orchids have a resting period although they do have sympodial growth and do perennate. -

A curbside crack in this study was defined as a linear space (under 20 mm in width) between the asphalt pavement and curbstone. The species composition of plants invading curbside cracks was surveyed in 38 plots along the serial National Route, over a total length of 36.5 km, in Fukuoka City in southern Japan. In total, 113 species including native plants (83 species, 73.5%), perennial herbs (57 species, 50.4%) and woody plants (13 species, 11.5%) were recorded in curbside cracks. Buried seeds were also obtained from soil in curbside cracks, which means the cracks would possess a potential as seed bank. Incidentally, no significant differences were found in the vegetation characteristics of curbside cracks among land-use types (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, P > 0.05). From these results, curbside cracks would be likely to play an important role in offering habitat for plants in urban area. -

This genus is distinguished from other genera belonging to Rubiaceae by several morphological characteristics including the leaves in whorls of 2–8, 3 or 4-lobed corollas, rudimentary corolla tubes, and dry mericarps (Yamazaki 1993, Ehrendorfer et al. 2014, Elkordy & Schanzer 2015). Article 9.23 of the Shenzhen Code (Turland et al. 2018) requires that “on or after 1 January 2001, lectotypification, neotypification, or epitypification of a name of a species or infraspecific taxon is not effected unless indicated by use of the term “lectotypus”, “neotypus”, or “epitypus”, its abbreviation, or its equivalent in a modern language,” and Art. 7.11 requires that “… designation of a type is achieved only…, on or after 1 January 2001, if the typification statement includes the phrase “designated here” (hic designatus) or an equivalent.” However, in many monographic and taxonomic works published on or after 1 January 2001, the requirements of Art. -

AREA Non-native trees are some of the most beloved plants in the landscape due to their beauty. In addition, these trees are grown for the shade, screening, structure, and landscape benefits they provide. Deciduous trees, whose leaves die and fall off in the autumn, are valuable additions to landscapes because of their changing interest throughout the year. Evergreen trees are valued for their year-round beauty and shelter for wildlife. Evergreens are often grouped into two categories, broadleaf evergreens and conifers. Broadleaf evergreens have broad, flat leaves. They also may have showy flowers, such as Camellia oleifera (a large shrub), or colorful fruits, such as Nellie R. Stevens holly. Coniferous evergreens either have needle-like foliage, such as the lacebark pine, or scale-like foliage, such as the green giant arborvitae. Conifers do not have true flowers or fruits but bear cones. Though most conifers are evergreen, exceptions exist. Dawn redwood, for example, loses its needles each fall. The following are useful definitions: Cultivar (cv.) - a cultivated variety designated by single quotes, such as ‘Autumn Gold’. A variety (var.) or subspecies (subsp.), in contrast, is found in nature and is a subdivision of a species (a variety of Cedar of Lebanon is listed). Full Shade - the amount of light under a dense deciduous tree canopy or beneath evergreens. Full Sun - at least 6 hours of sun daily. -

Numerous growers, pest control consultants, and managers have complained that the recommended rates of some postemergent herbicides, such as glyphosate, are no longer effective on these weeds. Since glyphosate-resistant biotypes of these species have now been confirmed (Shrestha et al., 2007), alternative integrated techniques need to be employed to effectively manage resistant and nonresistant biotype populations and to prevent the further development of herbicide resistance. A basic understanding of the biology of these weeds is essential to develop an integrated management approach. Biology of Horseweed and Hairy Fleabane Horseweed and hairy fleabane are summer annuals belonging to the Asteraceae (sunflower) family. The temperature and light requirements for germination, soil type preference, and depth of soil emergence of these two species are fairly similar. The optimal temperature for germination of both species ranges from 65ºF to 75ºF, and they can germinate under moderate (0.4 MPa) water stress. However, hairy fleabane can germinate at lower temperatures than horseweed (Karlsson and Milberg 2007). -

Acacia greggii 3€/20seeds. Small deciduous tree with small leaves that gets covered with yellow flowers in late spring. Acacia karoo 4€/20seeds. Slow in the beginning but as soon as it anchors itself onto the ground it creates an umbrella like tree with sweet scented late spring flowers and most importantly 10cm white spines that will protect it from giraffes (if you have them!) and are very ornamental nevertheless. Acacia mearnsii 4€/20seeds. A nice medium sized tree with ferny foliage and pic panicles of soft lemon flowerheads in late spring. Don’t plant in areas where there is a danger of becoming invasive. Aechmea recurvata ´Big Mama´ 3€/20seeds. One of the best (and biggest) recurvata selections that colors up in pinks and oranges when in flower and then goes back to green when in fruit. Aethionema grandiflorum 3€/20seeds. Tough and long lived Aethionema that takes summer drought excellent. Gets covered in pink in spring. Alyssoides utriculata 3.30€/20seeds. Perfectly suited to screes and rocky soils on a big rock garden or equally at home at a Mediterranean drought tolerant border with good air circulation, this useful shrublet has both vibrant yellow flowers and peculiar round seedpods in short stems above the leaves. -
