The Archives and Special The Archives and Special Collections – 2016 Collections – 2016 James Hardiman Library The Archives and Special Collections in 2016 Welcome to the 2016 review of the year for archives and special collections at NUI Galway. This year has seen some very positive developments. They include the increasing profile of our collections nationally and internationally, the commencement of another major digital archive project with the Gate Theatre, the announcement by former President Mary Robinson that she will donate her archive to the University, a national teaching and learning award for engaging Leaving Certificate students with archives, and the donation by the Dominican Convent of its splendid library. We also published an archives strategy to 2020 and an impressive guide to our special collections. Much else has been achieved, as outlined in the James Hardiman Library following pages. Coverage is selective in the interests of brevity and is focused on the wider impact of archives and special collections. The successes reported reflect the creativity and commitment of the staff involved. A key point to note throughout is the importance of partnerships with, for example, the Moore Institute, the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance, and the Arts in Action Programme, in addition to the invaluable advice of the Archives Strategy Committee and strong support from the University Management Team. Irish Soldiers and Desertion in the Ranks of the Eighteenth-Century French Army Colm James Ó Conaill The article will begin with a general overview of the Irish regiments in French service during the eighteenth century. The study will focus on those Irish soldiers and their followers who went to France after the defeat of the Catholic forces of James II and the assumption of power by William of Orange. The second part of the study will analyse the phenomenon of military desertion from the ranks of the Irish regiments in French service. The primary sources used, troop registers from the Archives de Guerre (Service Historique de l’Armée de Terre) at Vincennes, provide detailed information on the service record of the soldiers, including their first and last names, the rank of NCOs, and their place of birth. The records also give detailed physical descriptions of the soldiers which often include their height, physical appearance and their hair and eye colour. Crucially, the records also tell us when and why soldiers left the army. The importance of the contrôles de troupe, established after a royal decree of 2 July 1716, cannot be overstated as they leave us a comprehensive record for thousands of Irish migrants as well as for French soldiers in the ranks.1 1. The Economic and Social Review, Vol. 50, No. 4, Winter 2019, pp. 625-638 Fifty Years a-Growing: Economic History and Demography in The Economic and Social Review Cormac Ó Gráda* University College Dublin Abstract: This paper surveys publications in the fields of economic history and demography in The Economic and Social Review since 1969. Numbering 60 in all, they cover a broad chronological and thematic range. Some of these papers never attracted much notice, but stand as useful sources for future historians. A few have become classics. I ECONOMIC HISTORY AND DEMOGRAPHY ver its half century the ESR has published 60 or so papers on topics in the Ofields of economic history and demography. They are listed chronologically from Walsh (1970) to Walsh (2017) at the end of this paper. Some have since been forgotten; several are still read and still resonate, and a few deserve to be called classics. Not that even the most familiar of them are widely known: according to Google Scholar, of the 60 papers in this category, over one-in-four had been cited fewer than five times by late May 2019. Some were very specialised and of their time. Others deserved more but were ignored, wasting their sweetness on the desert air. Even more galling is that the most cited paper of all (Burda, 1995) is listed on Google Scholar as a University of Stockholm discussion paper (Burda, 1995). Most of the contributors were based in Ireland; they include economists, economic historians, geographers and sociologists. It argues for recognition of foodways as a significant element in Ireland’s intangible cultural heritage. It highlights and interrogates constructs such as ‘national’ and ‘regional’ cuisines, charting the growing scholarship around Irish food history from the ground breaking work of A.T. Lucas and Louis Cullen to a recent emerging cluster of doctoral researchers. -

LIST III EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY DUBLIN (HI 4312) Hilary/2013 Duration: one semester Contact Hours p/w: 2 hrs lecture/seminar Weighting: 10 ECTS Prof. David Dickson This semester-long course encourages students to explore the transformation of the city of Dublin between the 1690s and c.1800, spanning the time that it functioned as the parliamentary capital of the country and as a centre of upper-class resort, rivaled only by London within the English-speaking world. The course serves as an introduction to the comparative study of urban history, but the focus remains firmly on the city itself, on its problems of growth, on the development of the public sphere, and on the opening out of politics from Parliament House to guild- hall, tavern and the street itself. The course is organized around a close analysis of some ten moments in the history of the eighteenth-century city -- political, architectural, literary and scandalous. These ten events have been chosen as starting-points from which to explore broader themes and processes of change, and hopefully they will also provide inspiration for major essay topics. Students will be required [a] to take part in one collaborative tutorial presentation in the course of the term on a pre-arranged topic and subsequently to submit a paper of appx. 1,000 words based on the presentation, drawing from the menu of topics listed below; and [b] to complete one essay from the menu of topics listed below; the essay must be no more than 3,000 words in length, and must delivered to the Departmental Office on the date as given in the Departmental Handbook.
