I would not be here today without the love and sacrifices of my wonderful parents, Dutroy and Yves Emeline Jérémie. Central to my upbringing, personal and professional development were the values taught & lived out by you, my parents. Based on the commitments of your faith and culture, you taught me to use my gifts and talents in the service of others. A well-known Haitian saying captures the essence of this commitment: “Tout moun se moun” – “All people are people.” This entails that dignity is reserved for no specific color, class or creed: justice should be available for all people. To my mother, you have shaped my life significantly and have encouraged my love for God, love for myself, and love for others. Your deep faith and trust in God helped me to believe and trust especially through difficult times. Often you would always say to your children, “Pa peur ti moun, Jesus geyen controle.” Daddy, two descriptors come to mind when I think of you: peace and gentleness. Throughout my whole life I can’t think of anyone else that emulates peace and grace, always encouraging us to serve others and use our gifts to serve the needs of the world. Mommy and daddy, you two are the rock of our family. Your faith and commitment gave your children strength and empowered us to be able to overcome any of life’s’ challenges. To my children Mateo MesiDye and Naya Emeline, you two are the driving force and inspiration in my life.     "UNIVERSITY STUDENT SUPPORT FOR CARIBBEAN INTEGRATION: A FOUR CAMPUS STUDY" 1 Walter C. Soderlund, Stuart H. Surlin, Robert M. Krause, Frank Innes, Ronald M. Welch all at the University of Windsor Windsor, Ontario CANADA N9B 3P4 • Paper prepared for presentation at the Annual Conference of the Caribbean Studies Association Kingston, Jamaica May 1993 INTRODUCTION: Following World War II, in spite of reservations evident in the Moyne Report, British policy sought to link the independence of its West Indian colonies to their integration into a federal political system (Will, 1991:5-10). While a West Indies Federation was created in 1958, its British rather than West Indian origins, an emphasis on political over economic factors and the insularity or parochialism of its component parts, led to its collapse before the end of 1962 (Etzioni, 1965:138-139). Excellent accounts of the origins, performance and demise of the Federation are contained in (Proctor, 1957; Springer, 1962; Mordicai, 1968, Millette, 1969; Axline, 1979; and Payne, 1980). In spite of the failure of the Federation, individual West Indian colonies of Great Britain did achieve their independence between 1962 (Jamaica and Trinidad/Tobago) and 1983 (St. Kitts- Nevis). During the same time, a network of cooperative and integrative schemes among the countries developed; chief among these being the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) in 1965, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in 1966, the Eastern Caribbean Common Market (ECCM) in 1968 (which developed into the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States in 1981), and the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) in 1973. The latter organization, presided over by a Council of Heads of Government, has focused primarily on economic and other types of functional cooperation (Emanuel, 1987:1-6).

    102 MTV AND TRANSATLANTIC COLD WAR MUSIC VIDEOS WILLIAM M. KNOBLAUCH INTRODUCTION In 1986 Music Television (MTV) premiered “Peace Sells”, the latest video from American metal band Megadeth. In many ways, “Peace Sells” was a standard pro- motional video, full of lip-synching and head-banging. Yet the “Peace Sells” video had political overtones. It featured footage of protestors and police in riot gear; at one point, the camera draws back to reveal a teenager watching “Peace Sells” on MTV. His father enters the room, grabs the remote and exclaims “What is this garbage you’re watching? I want to watch the news.” He changes the channel to footage of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the 1986 nuclear arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. The son, perturbed, turns to his father, replies “this is the news,” and lips the channel back. Megadeth’s song accelerates, and the video re- turns to riot footage. The song ends by repeatedly asking, “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” It was a prescient question during a 1980s in which Cold War militarism and the nuclear arms race escalated to dangerous new highs.1 In the 1980s, MTV elevated music videos to a new cultural prominence. Of course, most music videos were not political.2 Yet, as “Peace Sells” suggests, dur- ing the 1980s—the decade of Reagan’s “Star Wars” program, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and a robust nuclear arms race—music videos had the potential to relect political concerns. MTV’s founders, however, were so culturally conserva- tive that many were initially wary of playing African American artists; addition- ally, record labels were hesitant to put their top artists onto this new, risky chan- 1 American President Ronald Reagan had increased peace-time deicit defense spending substantially.

Ministers from Cariforum countries (the Caribbean Community Q plus the Dominican Republic) are From Inter-American Dialogue’s Latin America Advisor expected in March to sign an Friday, Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) February 1, 2008 with the European Community, a landmark free trade agreement that some critics fear will hurt the Caribbean. Will the EPA be good or bad for the Caribbean? Will the region lose more than it gains from the agreement? Guest Comment: Ronald Sanders: "The EPA is a reciprocal A agreement on trade in goods and services and investment. The European Union is considerably richer than the Cariforum countries and its population is more than 30 times larger. Reciprocity between unequals must favor the larger and better resourced region. Over time, the terms of this agreement will give European companies national treatment in Cariforum countries. With their greater resources, European companies will dislodge all but a few Caribbean companies from their own markets. European goods will also push out products of small Caribbean firms from their domestic space. While reciprocity also allows Cariforum companies national treatment in the EU, Caribbean companies simply lack the resources to compete with much larger European companies in the EU; reciprocity for Cariforum countries is, therefore, meaningless. Cariforum countries face the prospect of a return to a plantation-type economy such as existed during colonialism and servitude where the large companies will be owned by absentee European owners and managed by expatriate managers with the profits repatriated to Europe and Caribbean people serving only as employees.

    “JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sabia McCoy-Torres August 2015 © 2015 Sabia McCoy-Torres “JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE Sabia McCoy-Torres, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 This ethnography explores the symbiotic relationship between the West Indian Diaspora and performance based, Jamaican originated, reggae culture. The field site was Brooklyn, New York. I analyze the intersections of reggae with racial and cultural identity construction, expressions of gender and sexuality, transnationalism, and place making practices. The formation of a local, West Indian led, reggae related economy is also a subject of focus. In order to theorize the impact West Indians have on Brooklyn and their subjectivities, I develop the concepts transgeographies and figurative citizenship. I argue that the West Indian Diaspora creates transgeographic cultural places that specific sociocultural practices and performance help to form. I offer that performance, action, and material alteration coalesce to physically transform space and imbue it with affect and sensory elements that together constitute links to the various nations of the Caribbean. The West Indian geographies of Brooklyn are thereby brought inside the Caribbean space expanding how geography is conceived of as an analytic. Emergent diasporic subjectivities are formed within these transgeographic cultural places, one of them being what I term figurative citizenship. Grahame, Pennsylvania State University - Schuylkill Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: This paper grows out of a multi-year ethnographic study of Indo-Trinidadian immigrants in the U. S. and Canada. In our studies of migration and family life, we became interested in the construction of “Indo- Trinidadian” as an identity. This term emerged as a designation for people in the Indian diaspora who migrated to Trinidad in the 19th and 20th centuries in connection with indentureship. The term has formal and informal uses referring to ethnicity and nationality in official contexts, and to food, music, fashion, and the like in everyday life. As an identity, “Indo-Trinidadian” has a variety of cultural and political supports that operate both locally and transnationally. These supports become salient in new and complex ways for Indo-Trinidadians who make a second migration to North America. We argue that in Toronto and New York—major destinations for Indo-Trinidadian migrants—Indian identity becomes unsettled and problematic. In response, these migrants are called upon to do specific kinds of identity work to manage their identities as Indian, Trinidadian, and American or Canadian. Drawing upon our fieldwork, we describe several distinctive patterns that emerge as Indo-Trinidadians seek to work out places for themselves in their new cultural, political, and economic contexts.

The Caribbean can be many things to many people: a geographic region some- where in America’s backyard, an English-speaking outpost of the British Empire, an exciting holiday destination for North Americans and Europeans, a place where dirty money is easily laundered, and even an undefined, exotic area that contains the dreaded Bermuda Triangle, the mythical lost city of El Dorado, the fabled Fountain of Youth and the island home of Robinson Crusoe. Enriched by the proc- ess of creolization, the cosmopolitanism of the average Caribbean person is also well recognized: ‘No Indian from India, no European, no African can adjust with greater ease and naturalness to new situations’ (Lamming 1960, 34). As a concept or notion ‘the Caribbean’ can also be seen to have a marvellous elasticity that de- fies the imposition of clear geographic boundaries, has no distinct religious tradi- tion, no agreed-upon set of political values, and no single cultural orientation. What, then, is the Caribbean? Who can justifiably claim to belong to it? Of the various peoples who have come to comprise the region, whose identity markers will be most central in defining the whole? For not all citizens of a nation or a re- gion will be equally privileged and not all will have equal input in the definition of national or regional identity.
