Volume 19 Issue 6 June 1, 2019 The 1958 - 1960 Lincolns, Interesting Automobiles A totally different Lincoln from the ones who came before it. Experiencing a shortage of articles from our members, we went back into the archives of Continental Comments for an interesting article; which you might enjoy. Lincoln models 1958 through 1960 were both interesting from a mechanical and stylistic standpoint. A lot of folks were not quite sure if the new look of these models was something that they would really like over a period of time. Compared to the 1956 and 1957 models, they really were quite different. Boxier and somewhat larger by most measurements. Now some 60 years later, they are sort of coming into their own. Nice examples will bring a lot of money today, especially if they are convertibles. We have several of these models owned by North Star club members, and they do speak quite highly of them. This article was written by Tim Howley and appeared in the July August 2002 issue of Conti- nental Comments. It is an interesting story, and it looks at these models in a fairly object fashion. We think of the 1959 monthly publication of Cadillac and 1957-59 Imperial as being the most interesting examples. But when you set the Northstar Region them alongside the 1958 Lincoln, and to a degree the 1959 and 1960 versions, they don't even of the Lincoln and begin to compare in terms of uniqueness of design. -

Preston Tucker: His Car and the Men Who Helped Create It By STEVE REPERGEL Recently, I had the privilege of speaking to Philip S. Egan, author of “Design and Destiny: the making of the Tucker Automobile.” Now 81, Egan, an industrial designer, helped make Preston Tucker's dream car a reality. This story outlines my conversations with Egan, presents findings derived from his book and offers insight into the minds of the automotive geniuses who worked so diligently behind the scenes. As a highly creative individual who possessed acute visionary skills and a refined sense of business acumen, Preston Tucker was without question a successful entrepreneur long before he envisioned the Tucker automobile. Much of his success is credited to his personality---he had the talent and gift to make people believe and invest in his ideas. Preston Tucker began his entrepreneurial triumphs during World War II with inventions of mechanical design. His involvement with military staff at Washington D.C. led to contributions on the Sherman Tank, the creation of the infamous Combat Car and the Tucker Turret which was used widely throughout the Second World War His interest in automobiles, especially with regards to speed, was sparked by his close relationship with famous racecar driver and designer Harry Miller. From his associations with Miller, Tucker spent much time composing concepts of mechanical ingenuity that could be applied to the inner workings of a revolutionary automobile. It was clear, however, that Preston Tucker would not be satisfied with just selling his ideas about automobiles. He wanted to produce a vehicle on the open market that he could proudly claim as his very own. -

2021 CDS COMPETITION PLANS September 1, 2020 Revised March 12, 2021 Revised April 20, 2021 2021 COMPETITION PLAN Dear Collegiate Design Series Teams, As the world embraces the new reality of the COVID-19 into 2021, SAE International wants to ensure you that we are moving forward with plans to allow continued student engagement in a controlled manner to meet all the necessary precautions of the pandemic and still deliver on strong educational experiences for your teams in 2021. We know that planning for a typical competition year is not an option based on the following: • Academia landscape is reporting over 50% universities resuming the fall semester operating either 100% virtual or with some sort of hybrid model. Spring semesters are either reported as going virtual or TBD. • 85% of our teams reported seeing their project funding either secured and now in jeopardy or not being secured. • 71 % of the teams have restrictions on budget and lab space set by the university. • 45% of our teams may be unable to participate onsite in the spring/summer due to being located outside of the United States border. • 28% of teams already are aware of a travel ban policy implemented at their university effective until end of Spring 2021 semester. • Many sponsors and volunteers’ employers still have a travel restriction ban in place. • Local and State guidelines on operating large group gatherings vary in sizes across the country and within the state itself. Currently the largest reported flat number is 250; some venues offer a percentage such as 25% of max capacity or whatever is the smallest number. -

When Bazil speaks to K through 12 girls, she wants to make it clear that they have career choices. “Because we’re trying to grow the pipeline, we want to make sure that they realize they can be great scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Collegiate Design Series Baja SAE® Rules 2020 Revision B January 26, 2020 Foreword Welcome to Baja SAE® 2020! For the 2020 season, there are a number of significant rule changes which warrant some explanation of rationale. For the complete list of rule changes, see the next section, as well as the proposed rule changes for the 2021 season. The following are the major changes for 2020: New Technical Inspection Number Process: At every competition, a number of teams inevitably line up outside the gate as early as the afternoon before registration opens in order to secure a good tech number. This causes law enforcement problems for the event organizers, and means team members don’t get a good night’s sleep before competition. Prior to the first competition, a rules quiz will become available online. The questions will be based on the entire 2020 rulebook. Each team will have 3 attempts to take the quiz. A time will be recorded when you start and finish each attempt. The teams will be ranked based on the best score achieved of the 3 attempts, and then tie-broken based on the time from the start of the first attempt, to completion of the best attempt. For example, if your second attempt is your best of 3, your scored time will be from when you started the first attempt, to when you finished the second. This score stands for the whole season, so if you want a low tech number at every competition you attend, study the rulebook and ace the quiz on your first attempt.
