Akaki Tsereteli State University ATSU Akaki Tsereteli State University ATSU “From Modern University Towards the Freedom of Minds” Kutaisi Kutaisi, which is first mentioned in Apollonius of Rhodes’ “Argonautica” in the 3rd Century B.C., and was the capital city of United Georgia from the beginning of the 11th Century until the year 1122, is in the top five of the world’s oldest cities. In the second half of the 19th Century, it became the center of the “gubernia” (local government). Since 2012, the Georgian Parliament has been operating here. Kutaisi holds a distinguished place in Georgia, with its cultural, educational, and business traditions. History of ATSU: The history of Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU) started in 1933, and it is one of the oldest higher education institutions in Georgia. Kutaisi Technical University and Sukhumi Subtropical Teaching University merged with Akaki Tsereteli State University in 2006 and 2010, respectively. ATSU became one of the largest universities in Georgia, with a wide spectrum of academic degrees (Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels), professional and training programs, and research fields. ATSU aims to respond to job market needs and provide qualified professionals to contribute to the social, economic, and cultural development of the country. 2 University Mission: Based on the traditions of the Fazisi and Gelati Academies and principles of the “Magna Charta of the Universities”, Akaki Tsereteli State University – one of the oldest Caucasian multi-profile higher academic institutions, which ensures the unity and high quality of educational, research and business processes – aims at preparing professionals and leaders who will contribute to the development of their country and the world by creating, accumulating and spreading knowledge. The process began in the fall of 2011, when the Language and Cross-Culture component of Peace Corps Georgia launched a Georgian Country and Culture Guide project and PCVs from different regions volunteered to do research and gather information on their specific areas. After the initial information was gathered, the arduous process of merging the researched information began. Extensive editing followed and this is the end result. Contemporary Georgian Literature offers interesting interpretations of the terms “Caucasus” and “Caucasian,” but the discussion about this problem was started much earlier, in the beginning of 19th century, when the livening up of the ethnical concepts of “Caucasus” and “Caucasian” was witnessed in Georgian literature and public thinking. The historical shift of Georgia into the new epoch of colonialism, which can alternatively be called “The Epoch of Russian Colonialism”, caused the accentuation of the above mentioned concepts. Russia used the privilege of the orthodox country, confronted Georgians with non- Christian people of the Caucasus and deprived them from their political independence. The reaction of Georgians towards Russian colonialism was characterized by double standards, which were clearly reflected in Georgian literature of the period of Romanticism, first of all, in relation to the interpretation of the concepts “Caucasus” and “Caucasian.” The genuine goal of the colonial policy and their social strategies were pointed out clearly in the 1850–60s. The Georgians’ response to colonialism was modified and the previous ambivalent status was replaced by the radical confrontation: the main goal became the idea of the peaceful Caucasus on the condition of protection of national identities.

    DISPLAY TRAINING In July, Green Building Council Georgia conducted training on Building Energy La- Quarterly Newsletter Enhancing Capacity For Low Emission Development Strategies beling by DISPLAY. The training included how to use the online tool designed and maintained by Energy Cities. Originally it was intended for use by municipalities – EC-LEDS Covenant of Mayors’ signatories--but now it has become a management instrument for other interested parties as well, including NGOs, ministries, and the private sec- Summer 2015 Clean Energy Program tor. Currently DISPLAY is used by more than 400 municipalities in 27 countries. It contributes to the implementation of European Building Performance Directives that will become mandatory for Georgia after Georgian legislation is harmonized with AMERICA DAYS 2015 European law, as per a recently signed Association Agreement.
