Source: http://www.tropicalstormrisk.com Situation Update Pakistan According to the Pakistan Metrological Department, 3rd June’s Very Severe “PHET” (with maximum sustained wind 118 - 220 Km/hour near the centre) struck Northeast tip of coast last night and weaken to a Severe Tropical Cyclone and now lies at 21.5°N – 59.2°E over coastal areas of Oman. Estimates suggest the strong possibility of its recurving Northeast towards Pakistan coastal areas and the recurving may start this evening. This Severe Tropical Cyclone is not likely to weaken further before approaching Pakistan coastal areas. This Severe Tropical Cyclone is expected to approach Pakistan coastal areas on Saturday evening and landfall on Sunday (with maximum sustained winds 100-120 km/hour near the centre) with associated of 4 - 6 meters.

Under the influence of this system, fairly wide spread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls accompanied by strong gusty winds are likely in and Baluchistan coastal areas during the next 2 to 3 days.

PRCS Response

PRCS Sindh

PHET will affect the coastal areas of Sindh namely Thatta, Badin, Umer Kot, Southern Areas of Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas. PRCS Disaster Management Cell at has sent an Alert message to all PRCS Disaster Management (DM) Cells located at coastal areas of Sindh. PRCS DM Officers are in touch with the District Disaster Management Authority for possible action. PRCS Sindh Branch is working closely with the local authorities and PRCS Disaster Management Cells in Thatta and Badin are very active. In Badin the Government has allocated schools in UC Bughra Memon, Badmi Sirani and other UCs as relief camps. On 3rd June, the DCO Thatta announced evacuation of the people from area of KT Bandar.

A control room for the Cyclone PHET has been established at the PRCS Provincial Headquarters Karachi. The PRCS Branch Disaster Response Teams have been given alert signal for any possible deployment and the PRCS Emergency Response Teams of Karachi (South & East) have been alerted and instructed to prepare themselves for possible help in Karachi coastal areas if required.

1. Thatta a. One Ambulance is sent to Basic Health Unit Thatta for their health emergency response b. The Red Crescent Volunteers of four most vulnerable UCs headed by our DMO were busy in evacuating the vulnerable people to the safe areas c. The Rapid Assessment Team of Sindh Branch is deployed to Thatta and they have started their work on the ground d. Total 41 PRCS Volunteers are working in the different areas of Thatta and helping people

2. Badin a. 50 Tents have been released by DM Cell Badin to DCO Badin to establish relief camps in Sirani. b. The DMO Badin attended meeting with DDO Badin and according to him 3000 people have been evacuated from UC Ahmed Rajo. The following is the list of relief camps:-. i. Govt High School Golarchi ii. Govt Girls HSC Golarchi iii. Main Primary School Golarchi iv. GPS Bhi Colony v. GPS Ward No 3 vi. GPS Jaffar Jakhro vii. GPS Golarchi viii. Technical College Golarchi

c. Total 51 PRCS Volunteers are working under the DMO and helping people in evacuation. d. The Rapid Assessment Team has been deployed to Badin and started working on the ground.

PRCS has stock of relief items for 200 families in Badin and Thatta each therefore in case of immediate requirement the DMOs Badin & Thatta can respond immediately.

PRCS Baluchistan

In Baluchistan, the following coastal areas have been declared as very high risk areas: -

Gawadar (Population: 95,000) Ormara (Population: 25,000; distance from Gawadar 285 Km) Jewani (Population: 22,000; distance from Gawadar 85 km) Pisni [Kalmat, chur Bandar] (Population: 45,000; distance from Gawadar 190 Km) In this regard Pakistan Red Crescent Society, Baluchistan Provincial Branch is on high alert. In Gawadar and Lasbela. Disaster Management cells are fully prepared to take up the immediate actions. Provincial Headquarters has set up an emergency Control Room which is functional around the clock.
