PRIMEIRA ediÇÃO da SEGUnda Parte, SEGUnda edição da primeira parte. Obra extremamente rara foi impressa 13 anos depois da tomada de Granada, último enclave árabe em Espanha, tendo desempenhado um papel importante na conversão e evangelização dos mouros que permaneceram na Península. Depois da capitulação dos mouros de Granada em 1492, Hernando de Talavera, confessor de Fernando e Isabel, foi nomeado o primeiro arcebispo da cidade e encarregue da evangelização do povo. Homem tolerante, o arcebispo e os seus companheiros começam a aprender árabe tendo ganho o res- peito do povo árabe através do seu bom testemunho. É então chamado à cidade Pedro de Alcalá para ajudar o arcebispo nesta tarefa e que resultou na primeira gramática árabe alguma vez publicada. Os dois volumes foram impressos por Juan Varela de Salamanca que viajou de Sevilha, onde estava instalado, para Granada a pedido do arcebispo. O frontispício da primeira parte está adornada com as armas de Hernando de Talavera, tendo no verso uma grande gravura em madeira representando o autor a entregar a obra ao arcebispo, encontran- do-se estas duas gravuras reproduzidas também no ‘Vocabulista...’. Encontram-se também impressos lote 2 5 vários caracteres árabes e um alfabeto. Os primeiros seis fólios do caderno f da primeira parte foram impressos a preto e a vermelho. No verso da última folha da primeira parte encontra-se uma gravura, também em madeira, representando o Rei David. MANUEL ALVareS, A PriMeira DO género a ser publicada. Mais tarde conheceu uma nova edição com notas do P. António Velez, publicado em Évora, por Manuel de Lira em 1596 e na qual se baseia a nova edição de 1728. O P. Manuel Alvares, natural da Madeira, no lugar da Ribeira Brava, distinguiu-se como um dos mais eruditos padres jesuítas da época, versando as línguas clássicas e a filosofia. Tendo vindo para Portugal pouco depois de ordenado sacerdote pelo seu bispo local, ingressou no colégio de Coimbra em 1546 tendo ensinado nos colégios de Coimbra e Lisboa. Esta sua ‘Arte da Gramática’ foi utilizada durante muito tempo como o principal manual de estudo dos colégios jesuítas em Portugal. RARÍSSIMO. Tineidae, Acrolepiidae, Epermeniidae With 127 figures Reinhard Gaedike and Ole Karsholt Summary A review of three families Tineidae, Epermeniidae and Acrolepiidae in the Madeira Islands is given. Three new species: Monopis henderickxi sp. n. (Tineidae), Acrolepiopsis mauli sp. n. and A. infundibulosa sp. n. (Acrolepiidae) are described, and two new combinations in the Tineidae: Ceratobia oxymora (MEYRICK) comb. n. and Monopis barbarosi (KOÇAK) comb. n. are listed. Trichophaga robinsoni nom. n. is proposed as a replacement name for the preoccupied T. abrkptella (WOLLASTON, 1858). The first record from Madeira of the family Acrolepiidae (with Acrolepiopsis vesperella (ZELLER) and the two above mentioned new species) is presented, and three species of Tineidae: Stenoptinea yaneimarmorella (MILLIÈRE), Ceratobia oxymora (MEY­ RICK) and Trichophaga tapetgella (LINNAEUS) are reported as new to the fauna of Madeira. The Madeiran records given for Tsychoidesfilicivora (MEYRICK) are the first records of this species outside the British Isles. Tineapellionella LINNAEUS, Monopis laevigella (DENIS & SCHIFFERMULLER) and M. imella (HÜBNER) are dele­ ted from the list of Lepidoptera found in Madeira. All species and their genitalia are figured, and informa­ tion on bionomy is presented.     TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO: THE BANKSIAN BOTANICAL ‘SUITE’ ARRIVES IN MADEIRA ON HMS ENDEAVOUR Jordan Goodman* Abstract HMS Endeavour, the first British ship to circumnavigate the world on a scientific mission, had its first stop in Funchal on 12 August 1768 on the way to the Pacific. It was not a big ship and it sailed on its own. Not only was this a scientific voyage –initially making for Tahiti where Venus’s track across the sky could be accurately measured– but it had a remarkable and unique entourage dedicated to observing and recording the natural world. Though the ship’s commander, Lieutenant James Cook, had a good reason to call into the island’s principal port, it could have been otherwise: sea conditions, unpredictable at the best of times, might have forced him to head for Tenerife instead. Had this happened, the botanical history of Madeira might have been quite different. Fortunately for Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, the ship’s botanists, the sea was kind and the two men, the latter Linnaeus’s best student, were able to bring Hans Sloane’s pioneering botanical observations, made more than seventy years earlier, into the modern age.     FEATURE ARTICLE A TASTE OF HISTORY The Leacock Family Madeiras THE MONACO HOTEL, SAN FRANCISCO ~ JUNE 7TH 2009 ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY ROY HERSH © JUNE 2009 I received an email invitation to Rare Wine Co.’s extraordinary Madeira tasting while I was still in Portugal and had just been in Madeira a few days earlier for the fourth consecutive year. With that experience freshly ingrained and the historic nature and provenance of the bottles made available for the upcoming tasting in San Francisco, it was simply impossible to miss this event. RWC’s Mannie Berk, is unquestionably one of the world’s foremost authorities on Madeira and although he’s one of the calmest, most laid back individual’s I know, it was very clear how excited he was to try these Madeiras too. The fact that he had researched some of these rarities for decades, even studying the auction catalogues of Christie’s going all the way back to the 1970s, to gain perspective on the prices paid in the past and the sheer scarcity of this Leacock’s collection, speaks to his exceptional passion for Madeira.     View from outside the hotel at Quinta do Furão Madeira 13 – 18 November This is a report of my ‘reccy’ trip to Madeira, ahead of Honeyguide’s first holiday on Madeira in February 2008. I was there for two days less than the full week of the holiday being planned, but was able to visit most of the areas that the group will visit. For much of the time I had the pleasure of the company of holiday leaders Catarina Fagundes and Hugo Romano from Madeira Wind Birds. Many of the birds we saw, waders especially, they photographed and the pictures can be seen on their website www.madeirabirds.com Chris Durdin November 2007 1 Daily diary Tuesday 13 November – Funchal airport to Quinta do Furão It seems to be a tradition to clap as the plane landed safely – maybe a hangover from the slightly hairier landings before the runway was extended by more than a kilometre in the year 2000. The easyJet flight was early arriving so it was still light as I collected my hire car. Six little finches buzzed around, sounding like something between a greenfinch and a serin, and as they settled on a fence I could see they were canaries – which were abundant on the island. A starling flew through, which I thought nothing of at the time, but they are an ‘occasional visitor in winter’ (in Clarke, T – see book notes) so quite a good record. A blackbird sang from a cross in the cemetery over the road. I noticed that the trees in a small park by the hire cars were labelled: an interesting selection of tropical gums, palms, cypresses and others.
