he ultimate battle between light and darkness has already begun. The end of this age is near, Tbut the excitement is far from over. These are the days that the prophets and righteous of old longed to see, and we get to live in them. There may not have been a greater honor than this, but also there may have never been a greater responsibility. Being responsible begins with understanding the times and our place in them. Then we must make an intentional effort to be prepared. Soon those who have done this and those who have not will be easy to distinguish. Just as the biblical prophecies foretold, an army is gathering like no other that the world has ever seen. It will be both the irresistible force and the immovable object. Where it marches, it will conquer. Where it takes a stand, it will not be moved. That it is now gathering is one of the great signs that the end of this age is at hand, and the King will soon come to establish His kingdom. It is time to prepare the way for the Lord. The gospel of the kingdom must now be preached. Those who are mobilizing to help prepare the way for the Lord are the ones who, like it was said of Moses, see what others cannot see. They see Him who is unseen. If we truly see Him, we cannot help but to bow the knee to Him. If we truly see Him, we will obey Him. That is why we often see the term “the obedience of faith” in the New Testament. True faith obeys. If we see Him, we also know that victory is sure. Many claim that Christianity is the most arrogant of all the religions because we claim to be the only way to be reconciled to God. The truth is that if God sent His own Son to make the sacrifice that He did so that we could be reconciled, and we think that we can get there by our own efforts or on our own merit, wisdom, or strength and don’t need His provision, then we are the most arrogant of all creatures who have ever lived. The greatest arrogance of all is to not bow the knee to Him. Christianity is in truth the most humble of all of the religions, accepting and acknowledging our need for God as our Savior and our Lord. This is why God’s grace is given to the humble, and true humility is to bow the knee to Him in every way. The great army of God is now being mobilized in thousands of locations. It is going through basic training, a great emphasis upon the basics of the faith. Those who are the most successful in every field are those who do the basics best. Our foundations must be strengthened in the Lord for what is coming. This is our fortress, and our position is as impregnable as our devotion to His basic truth. However, His basic truth is much more than many suppose. The Book of Hebrews is considered the most theologically deep book of The Bible, yet the author lamented that he could only give his readers “milk” because they were too immature for solid food! (see Hebrews 5:12) We must grow up. To be strong in His truth begins with knowing His truth, and we are strong to the degree that we know them. We must be fortified in His Word, and a great love and hunger for His Word is coming upon His people.

Our Spiritual Weapons As we are commanded in I Corinthians 14:1, “Pursue love, and desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy .” The weapons of God’s army are not carnal but

The Morning Star E-Journal • 3 spiritual, and love is the most powerful weapon of God’s army. The gifts of the Spirit are how His love is demonstrated. Because our King is the Word, His communication through His people has always been the primary way He relates to the world, and prophecy is therefore to be esteemed among the gifts. Few things can impact a person like a word that they know came from the Lord just for them. As we are told in Acts 2:17-18, when the Lord pours out His Spirit the result is prophetic revelation—dreams, visions, and prophecy. We are also told here that this will be “in the last days ”. This is because at the end of this age we will need His guidance like never before. Even denominational leaders who previously embraced a theology that no longer believed the gifts of the Spirit operated in the church are now embracing and seeking the gifts of the Spirit which is evidence that we are in “the last days” when His Spirit is poured out upon all. This is certainly encouraging, but we must keep in mind why these are being so widely given now—we need to hear from the Lord clearly and accurately like we never have before. As remarkable as some of the prophetic gifts being demonstrated in these times are, they are still only a fraction of what they will be by the end of this age. What is soon coming upon God’s prophets will eclipse anything ever seen before, just as we are told in II Corinthians 3. The glory of the New Covenant will soon exceed anything ever seen under the Old Covenant, even what Moses saw. That is the sure Word of Scripture. As I was shown in The Vision of the Harvest I was given in 1987, noteworthy miracles are now becoming common. When I was a young believer in the early 1970s, it was noteworthy if anyone was healed of anything. A few evangelists and prophets saw much more consistent miracles, but overall miracles were rare. Now it is rare not to hear about extraordinary miracles almost every week. This is great but it is going to get much better. Great movements like The Vineyard, The Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship, and others kept raising the bar in believing God for miracles, healing, and deliverance, and God honored their growing faith. Even so, we are still a long way from walking in all of the authority we are called to and will need in the days to come. We must press on. We must also guard against being satisfied with where we are, or so familiar that we lose our appreciation for them. We need all of the gifts of the Spirit functioning in every local body. As the apostle wrote in I Corinthians 6-7, “the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you, so that you are not lacking in any gift .” The gifts of the Spirit are the living Christ manifesting Himself through His body, the church. When He is able to do all that He did when He walked the earth through our body, then His testimony is confirmed through us. This is part of what it means to be His body. The authority of the Lord in His faithful ones is increasing in these times, and we will need it. Even so, let us keep in mind that we only have spiritual authority to the degree that we abide in the King and He abides in us. We have our authority by being in the King. This is why we are told in II Corinthians 1:20, “For as many as may be the promises of God, in Him they are yes .” The New Covenant promises are available as we abide in Christ, never apart from Him. Those who walk in leadership in His church must lead by abiding in Him who is the Head of the church. Authority is a serious matter. To be entrusted with God’s own children is no light matter. If you entrusted your children to someone to take care of them and then came back and

4 • The Morning STar E-Journal found them sick, hungry, and filthy, you would not be happy! It is the ultimate honor and privilege to be entrusted with the Lord’s own children, but it is also the ultimate responsibility. We do not want to try to do this by our own devices. It is crucial that His people are prepared for the times. A primary reason why the biblical prophets were sent to Israel and the other nations was to inform them about the times and to interpret the current events in the light of God’s purposes. This is still a primary function of prophetic ministry. In this we, too, must excel more by abiding in Him who knows all things. True prophetic ministry is hearing with His ears, seeing with His eyes, understanding with His heart, and equipping His people to do the same. A new resolve, a new seriousness, is coming upon His leaders now. Much of this is the result of them learning not to lead by their own strength and their own wisdom, but to seek His grace, His strength, and His wisdom. It also includes learning not to take people’s yokes, but to take the Lord’s yoke and follow Him. This will and is rejuvenating the leadership of the body of Christ, and the result of this will be a great strengthening of His people. We are exhorted in James 3:1, “Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we shall incur a stricter judgment .” The judgments pronounced against false teachers and false shepherds are even more severe than those pronounced against false prophets. Therefore, we must be devoted to truth, integrity, and settle it in the beginning that if we have been entrusted as a shepherd of the Lord’s sheep, we will lay down our own lives for them, resolving to only provide them with the very best spiritual food, training, and protection as they need it. We are seeing increasing signs that a recovery of basic honesty is transforming science. We will also see this in the church, where it has been needed just as much. There are many doctrines that whole movements are built on which have no basis in Scripture, but are rather built on human prejudices, or in reaction to failures, disappointments, or problems in the church. We will see those who have been so diverted begin to flow back toward the mainstream of the River of Life. Many relationships that have been severed must be healed, and we must be sensitive to any way to be restored to those we’ve been separated from. We must build bridges on the common ground that we have with other parts of the body of Christ, always treating those who are at least embracing the basic doctrines of the faith as sons and daughters of the King who deserve the greatest respect. Any of the ones we have not done this with will be missing from the battle, and this will leave a big hole in our lines of battle. We need each other now, but in the coming times we will desperately need each other. The ultimate battle between light and darkness is now upon us, and we will all need each other in it. God has so orchestrated them that we will ultimately even have to love each other. The sooner we get started doing this, the easier it will be for us in the times ahead.

merican children of the mid-nineteenth century were essentially educated by the works of A one man, William Holmes McGuffey. The McGuffey Eclectic Readers sold 120 million copies between 1836 and 1920. These sales are comparable only to the Bible and Webster’s Dictionary.1 William Holmes McGuffey [1800-1873] began his educational profession at the age of fourteen after receiving a teaching certificate from his educator, Reverend William Wick. As instructed, he put an advertisement in the local paper that he would begin a four-month ses- sion of classes, six days a week, and eleven hours a day on the first day of September 1814. Forty-eight students assembled from the West Union, Ohio community, now Calcutta, Ohio. McGuffey drew his lessons primarily from the Bible.2 A traveling Presbyterian Pastor took notice of McGuffey’s teaching skills and offered to take him to reside in his home while he attended Old Stone Academy. McGuffey did so for the next four years. He then continued his education at Washington College for the next six years, where he worked the farm to pay for his education, taught, and studied. When he couldn’t afford to buy his books, he copied them longhand. Before completing his degree, he was offered to become a professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He accepted this position which he held for ten years before moving to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he would be a professor at the University of Virginia for twenty-eight years. Moreover, the Oxford Presbytery ordained him in 1829 as he loved to preach and demonstrated a superb ability to “communicate extemporaneously.”3 McGuffey believed that children’s textbooks were lacking efficiency in training children to read. Therefore, he began to assemble young children on his porch to experiment on how to best teach them to read. He used newspaper clippings and other collected writings in his efforts to develop a curriculum best suited to their development. These sessions were the beginnings of what would become the Eclectic Readers.4 McGuffey’s Readers focused on reading, elocution, rhetoric, and memorization. He accom- plished this by instructing the child to read the provided story aloud, and retell the story in his own words either verbally or by writing it down. Then the child would demonstrate his understanding of its meaning by articulating the lesson learned or the moral of the story.5 The Readers compiled reading material, prose, and poetry from American and English religious leaders as well as , Thomas Jefferson, John Milton, William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, and to name a few.6

6 • The Morning STar E-Journal Bible stories and passages of Scripture were prominent throughout the Readers because salvation and righteousness were central themes. Secondary themes were piety, kindness, and patriotism.7 McGuffey adeptly weaved the values of loving God, your neighbor, and your country throughout his textbooks. Children were continually being taught honesty, obedience, industry, cleanliness, forgiveness, gratefulness, cooperativeness, curiosity, self-control, meekness, independence, courageousness, frugality, punctuality, truthfulness, perseverance, responsibility, and honesty.8 The Preface of the Fourth Eclectic Reader states: From no source has the author drawn more copiously, in his selections, than from the sacred Scriptures. For this he certainly apprehends no censure. In a Christian country, that man is to be pitied, who at this day, can honestly object to imbuing the minds of youth with the language and spirit of the Word of God.9 The Preface to the Third Eclectic Reader states: The time has gone by, when any sensible man will be found to object to the Bible as a school book, in a Christian country, unless it be on purely sectarian principles, which should never find a place in systems of general education.10 And; The Bible is the only book in the world treating of ethics and religion, which is not sectarian. Every sect claims that book as authority for its peculiar views.11 It was normal at the time of that writing to infer to America as a Christian nation and to consider the Bible the authority on educating in matters of morality and religion. The concern in that era was only to avoid promoting one sect over another but central to all was the Bible. It was this idea that provided the stable foundation for America for centuries. It is a wholly modern American idea that the Bible ought to hold no position in the public education of children. The original Readers were replete with biblical instruction; however, William McGuffey was only responsible for the original editions of the first four Readers. The fifth and sixth Readers were written by his brother, Alexander McGuffey. Until 1941, the Readers were simply titled, Eclectic Readers. It was not until later editions that they bore McGuffey’s name in the title.12 Nonetheless, the name did not signify continuity of content. Later editions contained revisions that greatly decreased the biblical and God-centered content of the original works of McGuffey.13 The greatest revisions are found in the 1879 edition which is still available in print today. These books are furthest from the original McGuffey content. Just the same, I own an 1865 printing of McGuffey’s Third New Eclectic Reader, and it is dramatically altered from the original 1837 printing. Where the original edition has essays on the Character of Jesus, The Bible, More about the Bible, The Goodness of God, Gospel Invitation, and the Character of Martin Luther,

Many Americans that were educated by the McGuffey Readers have fond recollections. Henry Ford reprinted the 1857 edition personally in 1928 due to his cherished memories of their use in his education. He wrote: Most youngsters of my day were brought up on the McGuffey Readers. Most of those youngsters who still survive have a profound respect for the compiler of the Readers. The moral principles Dr. William Holmes McGuffey stressed, the solid character build- ing qualities he emphasized, are stressed and emphasized . . . today even though the McGuffey Readers themselves are not required reading.16 In addition, the Saturday Evening Post in 1927 ran an article on McGuffey authored by Hugh Fullerton who wrote: For seventy-five years his [McGuffey’s] system and his books guided the minds of four-fifths of the school children of the nation in their taste for literature, in their morality, in their social development, and next to the Bible, in their religion.17 In kind, Ralph Rush in his book, The Literature of the Middle Western Frontier wrote concerning McGuffey: Upon the generations immediately succeeding the pioneer period, the influence of McGuffey may well have been greater than any other writer or statesman in the West. His name has become tradition not yet extinct.18 McGuffey provided the formative curriculum for the new nation in the educational spirit of the Founding Fathers who were greatly desirous of school teachers educating youth in biblical morality and patriotic civic responsibility. They believed that the success of this nation depended upon a well-educated populace capable of governing themselves and participating in the governing of the nation. McGuffey, in his essay titled, “General Education,” thoroughly evinced this necessity, “No thought is more true, and no truth more important, than that general intelligence is the only palladium of our free institutions.”19

8 • The Morning STar E-Journal The Morning Star E-Journal • 9 John Adams by Maryanne Hardiman People and nations are forged in the fires of adversity. — John Adams (1797-1801) Second President of the and Patriot n 1774, John Adams was thirty-nine years old when he was selected Ito represent the Massachusetts Bay Colony at the first session of the Continental Congress. He remained in service to his country until 1801, when he fulfilled his term of office as President of the United States. Adams was son to a Congregationalist deacon and farmer who grew up outside of Boston. He entered Harvard at the age of fifteen. His father had hoped he would enter the ministry, but John chose to study law. At the age of twenty he wrote, “the study and practice of law, I am sure, does not dissolve the obligations of morality or of religion.” At the age of thirty, he became one of the best equipped lawyers in America (Chamberlain, Mellen, John Adams, The Statesman of the American Revolution, Cambridge: The Riverside Press 1898. Pg. 11). In his diary entry dated February 22, 1756, John Adams wrote, “Suppose a nation in a distant region should take the Bible for their only law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience . . . in justice, kindness and charity towards his fellow men . . . and reverence to Almighty God . . . What a Eutopia, what a Paradise this region would be” (Federer, William J., America’s God and Country, St. Louis, MO. 2000, pg. 5). Adams was thrust under public scrutiny when he defended the British soldiers who were involved in the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. He firmly believed in the principle that every man deserved a fair trial. Adams’ representation of the British soldiers cost him much business and put him at odds with his fellow countrymen. Eventually though, they did respect him for what he had done. One of four delegates from Massachusetts, Adams was sent to Philadelphia for the Continental Congress. He distinguished himself not only for his statesmanship, but he also urged Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence and nominated George Washington as Commander in Chief of the . When the delegates were assembled for the first time, a motion was made for the sessions to open with prayer. However, because there were so many differing denominations this was objected by a few. Mr. Samuel Adams arose and said, “He was no bigot, and could hear a prayer from a gentleman of piety and virtue, who was at the same time a friend to his country.” He recommended the Rev. Duche an Episcopal clergyman. The Reverend arrived the next day, September 7 and read the thirty-fifth Psalm. After the Psalm, Adams wrote that Duche broke out into extemporaneous prayer for the delegates and the colonies. John Adams wrote to his wife, “You must remember this was the next morning after we heard the horrible rumor of the cannonade of Boston. I never saw a greater effect upon an audience. It seemed as if Heaven had ordained that Psalm to be read on that morning . . . It has had an excellent effect upon

10 • The Morning STar E-Journal everybody here. I must beg you to read that Psalm” (Adams, Charles Francis, Familiar Letters of John Adams and His Wife Abigail Adams, During the Revolution: With a Memoir of Mrs. Adams Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1876, pgs. 37-38). On July 3, 1776, the day following Congress’ approval of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote again to his wife, reflecting on what he had shared in Congress and, with prophetic insight, declaring the importance of that day: I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty…(Adams, Charles Francis, Letters of John Adams Addressed to his Wife, Vol. 1. Boston, 1841, pg. 128). In the gloomy days which succeeded the defeats at Brandywine and Germantown, when Washington and his army escaped destruction only by the unaccountable remissness of Howe, John Adams said, “These disasters will hurt us, but not ruin us.” He had unshaken confidence in the course of free empire” (Mellen, pg. 7). He married Abigail Smith in 1764 and had six children, four of whom lived to adulthood. Abigail’s father was a Congregationalist minister in Weymouth, Massachusetts and for several generations on both of her parent’s sides there were ministers. John and Abigail’s fifty-four years of marriage produced volumes of letters between the two and are regarded by historians as a wealth of information regarding the Revolutionary era. A strong woman of faith, Abigail often wrote to her husband about political matters interspersed with Scriptures. When the American Revolution unfolded she said, “Heaven is our witness, that we do not rejoice in the effusion of blood or the carnage of the human species, but having been forced to draw the sword, we are determined never to sheathe it slaved of Britain. Our cause is the cause of truth and justice and will finally prevail, though the combined force of earth and hell shall rise against it. To this cause I have sacrificed much of my own personal happiness, by giving up to the councils of America one of my nearest connections, and living for more than three years in a state of widowhood”(Adams, Familiar Letters, pg. 26). Throughout her married life, she had periods of separation from her husband leaving her in charge of raising the children. Her oldest son, John Quincy, accompanied her husband on many of his trips and traveled quite a bit as a young man. Like his father, he was away from his family for a number of years. John Quincy Adams later became the sixth President of the United States. Abigail wrote to a granddaughter that she had great cause of happiness in her life, yet early in her marriage, she lost two children in infancy and later her son Charles died at the age of thirty and her daughter at the age of forty-eight. In spite of these tragedies she said, “I am a mortal enemy to anything but a cheerful countenance and a merry heart which Solomon tells us does good like a medicine” (Adams, pg. 26). Adams himself stated that he was jealous, ambitious, and self-confident, but with a bulldog tenacity. He foresaw the inevitableness of the separation of the colonies, but in regard to his new nation, he was resolute and determined in securing freedom for his countrymen. He was known to be a man of integrity, speaking almost too bluntly, nevertheless, speaking in passionate appeals of liberty and justice! Adams believed in civil and religious liberty as inherent rights of the people. He promoted the formation of state constitutions, and after the Declaration of Independence, he argued for a national government under the Articles of Confederation.

The Morning Star E-Journal • 11 The Massachusetts Constitution, which he wrote in 1780, is the oldest governing constitu- tion of any state or country in the world. It was written seven years before the U.S. Constitution and was a model for our nation. John Adams tirelessly studied politics. In a letter written to his wife, he said, “I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain” (Letter to Abigail Adams, 1800). John Adams was also U.S. Minister to France, and along with John Jay and Benjamin Franklin, signed the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783, negotiating with Great Britain and ending the American Revolution. Later he was U.S. Minister to Britain. During this time, he greatly influenced the American states to ratify the Constitution by writing a three-volume work titled, A Defense of the Constitutions of the Government of the United States. In 1797, John Adams was elected second President of the United States. Addressing his country in his inaugural speech, he declared, “May that Being who is supreme over all, the Patron of Order, the Fountain of Justice, and the Protector in all ages of the world of virtuous liberty, continue His blessings upon this nation and its government and give it all possible success and duration, consistent with the ends of his providence” (Adams, Charles Francis, Letters of John Adams Addressed to his Wife, Vol. 2. Boston. 1841, pgs. 281-282). When Adams gave his State of the Union Address to Congress in 1800, he prayed, “May this territory be the residence of virtue and happiness! In this city, [Washington, D.C.] may that piety and virtue, that wisdom and magnanimity, that constancy and self-government, which adorned the great character whose name it bears be forever held in veneration! Here and throughout our country may simple manners, pure morals, and true religion flourish forever!” (John Adams State of the Union Address, November 11, 1800, Web, 13 May 2012, http://www.literaturepage. com/read/john-adams-state-of-union-17.html ) Adams was the first President to move into the White House in Washington, D.C. He wrote out a prayer to his wife, “I pray heaven to bestow THE BEST OF BLESSINGS ON THIS HOUSE and All that shall hereafter Inhabit it, May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under This Roof.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt had Adams’ prayer engraved upon the mantle which is now in the State Dining Room of the White House. During Adams’ Presidential term from 1797-1801, and even during the last years of Washington’s second term, the country began to polarize overviews on the Federal govern- ment. Simply put, political parties formed over, the role of the Federal government. As political thought crystallized into strong opinion, Adams’ Presidency was marked by difficult decisions as European conflicts escalated. To the great relief of many, Adams was successful in keeping our newly established nation out of war. When France threatened war with America, Adams called a National Fast Day for his countrymen to seek God to avert the war. In his proclamation, he quoted Proverbs 14:34: “Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people (KJV) .”

12 • The Morning STar E-Journal The Election of 1800 was brutal. Accusations flew, and political mudslinging knew no limits. Adams and Jefferson became embroiled in the arguments, and the once longtime friends became embittered enemies. Jefferson won the heated election in part because his party, the Republicans, were more organized. Adams’ Federalists were divided on past and future policy. To compound matters, Adams second son, Charles, died in November 1800. John Adams, weary from the infighting that presented him with a loss of a second term, left Washington D.C. to join his wife already back in Massachusetts. In doing so, he avoided Jefferson’s inauguration. Regardless of the political rhetoric and infighting, the election in 1800 represented still a peaceful transfer of power from one faction to another. Over the next nine years, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson did not have any communi- cation. The friendship had completely severed. A mutual friend of both, Dr. Benjamin Rush, and also a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was greatly troubled about the broken relationship between Jefferson and Adams. One night several months after Thomas Jefferson had retired from the Presidency, Benjamin Rush had a dream. He felt it was important and wrote it down. Then he sent it off to John Adams. In this dream, he had seen a page in history in the year 1809. This page in history recorded a most extraordinary event which was the renewal of friendship between the two ex-presidents of the United States. The page chronicled the start of their friendship between the two men [Jefferson and Adams] as well as the differences in opinion which separated them. After serving in public office, both men had retired to their home towns where they pursued former interests. The article continued, in November, 1809, Mr. Adams addressed a letter to Mr. Jefferson where he congratulated him upon the escape of retirement and gave him good wishes for his welfare. Mr. Jefferson replied to this letter. These letters were followed by a correspondence of several years in which they mutually reviewed the business and acknowledged to each other the errors of opinion into which they had fallen during the time they filled the same station in the service of their country. It is said that many precious truths are contained in these letters. It is hoped that the world will be favored with a sight of them . . . These gentlemen sunk into the grave nearly at the same time, full of years and rich in the gratitude and praises of their country—end of dream. At the time, Dr. Rush wrote the letter conveying the dream, Jefferson and Adams were still staunch enemies. Nothing like this had come to pass nor did it seem likely that it would. Nevertheless, Adams responded to Rush, “My friend, there is something very serious in this business. The Holy Ghost carries on the whole Christian system on this earth . . . Your proph- ecy, my dear friend, has not become history as yet. I have no resentment of animosity against the gentleman, Jefferson, but I write with difficulty . . . if I should receive a letter from him, I should not fail to acknowledge it or answer it.” Benjamin Rush then relayed the dream to Jefferson. Jefferson listened and reached out to Adams with a gracious letter. Adams, as promised, did not fail to acknowledge Jefferson’s letter. And so, in real life there began a renewing of friendship between the two. In regard to Dr. Rush’s dream, there is an amazing accuracy. Adams and Jefferson did become close friends again and there did follow a “correspondence of several years.” Entire

The Morning Star E-Journal • 13 volumes were eventually published which contained the letters written between the two in their latter years. Seventeen years after Dr. Rush’s dream, they did “sink into the grave nearly at the same time.” On July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams in Quincy, Massachusetts, and Thomas Jefferson in Monticello, Virginia, died within hours of each other. As the fourth was beginning to dawn, Jefferson said, “Is it the fourth yet?” and died around noon that day. Adams, that same day, died later that afternoon, unaware that Jefferson had already died, said, “Thank God Jefferson still lives!” Dr. Rush died in 1813, and he was aware of the reconciliation between his two friends. He wrote to John Adams, “I rejoice in the correspondence that has taken place between you and your old friend, Mr. Jefferson. I consider you and him as the North and South Poles of the American Revolution. Some talked, some wrote, and some fought to promote and establish it, but you and Mr. Jefferson thought for us all. I never take a retrospect of the years of 1775 and 1776 without associating your opinions and speeches and conversations with all great political, moral, and intellectual achievements of the congresses of those memorable years.” On the death of Adams and Jefferson on the very same day, the Rev. Edward Everett (a U.S. Representative and Senator, Governor, Diplomat, Secretary of State, and President of Harvard) delivered a speech in remembrance of the two: Having lived and acted and counseled and dared and risked all, and triumphed and enjoyed together, they have gone together to their great reward….Forgetting the little that had divided them and cherishing the communion of service and peril and success which had united, they walked with honorable friendship the declining pathway of age, and now they have “sunk down together” in peace into the bosom of a redeemed and grateful country . . . they were useful, honored, prosperous, and lovely in their lives, and in their deaths they were not divided. (Barton, David. “Benjamin Rush Dream about John Adams and Thomas Jefferson,” June 2008, Web, May 13 2012, . )1 The friendships between John and Abigail Adams and Jefferson resulted in a total of three hundred eighty letters written from one to the other, between 1777 until the death of the two men on July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years after they had signed the Declaration of Independence. John Adams was a great man who guided our nation in its very critical years. He was a man of deep abiding faith that guided him over the establishment, leading, and negotiating for this nation. He has been overshadowed by the capable men around him, but was on equal ground if not higher than many. We owe a debt to this man who steered America in her early formative days.

14 • The Morning STar E-Journal Three Deadly EMP Myths the U.S. Government Won't Talk About by Damien Campbell, May 18, 2012

magine a day when the United States of America Igoes dark. Cars, stores, trains, and planes stop. The computers we’ve built our lives around shut down—and won’t ever turn on again. One minute everything is fine, and the next… The power goes out. You’re in complete darkness. Every household across the country is shut down. The fact is this isn’t some myth or bad sci-fi movie. An EMP isn’t science fiction to China, Russia, or terrorists. It’s a very real thing, and could destroy our way of life. That said, you may be wondering…

What Is an EMP?

Any dictionary will tell you that EMP stands for “Electromagnetic Pulse.” But what they won’t say is that an EMP is like a tidal wave of radiation that destroys every electronic device in its path. And again—it’s not some space age weapon. Both the U.S. and Russia started testing them back in the 60’s… The truth is, EMPs can come from almost anywhere. Essentially they’re caused by a high- energy blast. But the most common way you’ll see them is a nuclear explosion. See, when a nuke goes off, it causes massive disruption in the magnetic fields. And when you add electrical systems to these lightning-fast changes in magnetic fields, you get bigger voltage surges than any piece of electronic equipment is meant to handle. Think trying to fit a tsunami through the five inch city water pipes—it’s gonna blow! And there’s NOTHING you can do about it. If China, N. Korea, Russia, or even a terrorist group like al-Qaeda wants to launch an EMP, there are a slew of ways they could sneakily send it off. But, there is some good news. If you use a few simple tricks, you can protect your stuff from an EMP. That said, you should understand some basic background to really get what’s going on here.

The Morning Star E-Journal • 15 Myth #1 “Turning Off Your Electronics Will Protect You” You never know when an EMP may hit. If and when it happens, it’s going to be nothing more than a massive wave shutting down and frying your equipment like a punch in the gut. Thinking that just turning it off and moving it away from windows will protect them just won’t work. Remember, this isn’t like unplugging your computer in a thunder storm… However, you should know damage to your electronic device will depend on several things: • The intensity of the EMP • Sensitivity of your electronic device, and • The amount of shielding between the electronics and the EMP source There is some truth to the myth that devices are more vulnerable while you’ve got them powered on. Here’s why: When an EMP hits, it pushes huge amounts of electricity through the device, the same way a power plant does. So when the device is on, you’ve got the power already flowing through it plus the power the EMP generates. But the reality is that there’s not going to be much (if any) difference between having your device on or off. When an EMP hits, that’ll be it. All of your most valuable electronic devices will become the world’s most expensive doorstops.

Myth #2 “An EMP Is Like a Bolt of Lightning” Sure, it’s similar to a lightning strike—frying electrical equipment with a hard-hitting electronic surge. But EMPs are actually more like a super-powerful radio wave. They’re quiet. They’re invisible. And they’re highly destructive. Everybody usually tries lightning arrestors or lightning-rod grounding techniques… But these strategies are destined for failure in protecting your equipment from electromag- netic pulses. EMPs will travel through the air in a straight line, while a second, delayed pulse navigates the power, phone, and cable lines. Power and telephone wires would absorb a ton of EMP energy because they act like very long antennas. This energy gets dumped into your power outlets and phone jacks, destroying most of the electronics connected to them. And then you and your family will be left in the Stone Age.

Myth #3 “EMPs Are ‘No Problem’ Since There Are Lots of Ways to Protect Yourself Against Them” Yep, there are many methods of protection against an EMP. But the fact is they’re rarely used, especially by civilians like you and me. An EMP protection strategy is like locking your

16 • The Morning STar E-Journal doors are night. You don’t need to lock your doors . . . as long as you don’t care if you’re robbed. But if you live in a dangerous neighborhood and you’ve already been threatened. You need a plan to protect yourself. You may not have been affected by an EMP yet, and maybe you won’t be tomorrow, but the more you procrastinate, the more you gamble with your life.

Tips to Get Started One way to protect your precious equipment is a Faraday box. It’s a simple metal box designed to divert and soak up the EMP. As long as the electronic device is insulated from the inside walls of the box, no EMP will touch it. And they’re easy to make. Lots of containers can be used as make-shift Faraday boxes: Metal filing cabinets, ammunition containers, or even cake boxes will do. To make one, just follow two basic rules: 1. The device inside must not touch its metal container. (You can use plastic, wadded paper or cardboard to insulate it from the metal.) 2. The metal shield has to be continuous, without any gaps between pieces or extra large holes. And here’s what’s cool; despite what you already may have heard, a Faraday box does NOT have to be airtight. The long wavelength of an EMP wouldn’t be able to break through your box. The Faraday box is a simple and cheap—an elegant solution for protecting your belongings against an EMP.

The Morning Star E-Journal • 17 18 • The Morning STar E-Journal A National Check-Up by Rick Joyner

he Oak Initiative was born through the coming together of Christian leaders who were Tconcerned about the rising national crisis in five major areas. Quickly, two more were added. They are now the following: 1) Spiritual/Moral 2) Economic 3) Political 4) Media 5) The Environment 6) Defense 7) Education This is the first of regular evaluation check-ups on each of these that I am doing for The Oak Initiative, but will also be including an expanded, more prophetically oriented version for The Morning Star e-Journal. The fact that so many Christians have been asking for this is an encouraging sign that much of the church is not only waking up to the important issues of the times, but becoming wide awake. This can be the single biggest factor of the times and portend a much brighter future. However, to be the salt and light we are called to be, we must see the world as it is, not just as we wish it would be, and then we need to see a clear strategy for navigating into the future. The Oak Initiative now has members in more than 160 nations, and of course, we would love to have our Morning Star e-Journal readers who are keenly interested or feel called to be watchmen in these times join The Oak. The Oak is developing a Christian Intelligence Service that will seek to raise up discerning and accurate watchmen around the world for developing the most accurate information resources available. It is just in its formative stages, but it is growing, and you could be an important part. To join The Oak, go to www.theoakinitative.org and sign up. The dues are just $10/month or $100 if paid in full for the entire year. The resources you will get from The Oak will be worth far more than this. For this study, I will lay a foundation by making a separate report for each one of the above issues, beginning with the Spiritual/Moral and continuing in the order listed above. We’ll then make follow-up reports that will be much briefer to continue addressing current events and trends. Though our readers are from many nations, our primary information at this time is about and from the U.S. As reporting stations are developed in other nations, we will include those reports, but we will begin with the United States where we have the most information. Even so, many of the trends in the U.S. can be applied to other nations, and some of the trends we’ll discuss will be relative to much of the world.

The Morning Star E-Journal • 19 The Health Meter with each goes from 1 being the lowest and most dangerous to 10 being the highest and healthiest. The Trend Arrow is for a quick reference rating with UP for getting healthier, and DOWN for getting worse. These will be followed by a commentary to explain the ratings.

Spiritual/Moral Present State: (2), Trend NEUTRAL.

Six months ago the trend would have been DOWN, but there are encouraging signs that the downward spiral in this area has not only leveled off but is starting to turn. Even so, overall America remains at what is probably its lowest state spiritually and morally in its history. POSITIVE FACTORS:

1) Over 90% of Americans claim to believe in God, nearly 80% claim to be Christians, and nearly 65% claim to be born-again Christians (this includes many Catholics and members of other denominations that are not known as evangelicals). 2) The largest and fastest growing churches in America are almost all evangelical, with most of these being Pentecostal, Charismatic, or Third Wave. New and vibrant movements are constantly emerging. Catholic and Protestant churches that emphasize sound biblical doctrine and a living relationship with God are also growing. Liberal churches and denominations that compromise basic biblical teachings continue to shrink. 3) The popularity of Christian television continues to grow and is now so great that nearly one dozen Christian channels are thriving. A major barometer of spiritual hunger and spiritual health are Christian books sales, and this too is showing encouraging trends. 4) Christian television and conferences have chipped away at the barriers between denomi- nations, and the interchange between different denominations and movements is becoming almost universal, greatly strengthening the body of Christ. 5) Some of the most effective missionaries and church leaders of all time are serving in these times and are having a significant impact. Their effectiveness is to some degree the result of the large support they generate, which reveals a large base of devoted believers behind them. 6) Some of the greatest intercessory prayer movements of all time have emerged in recent years. Prayer, one of the greatest signs of spiritual health, is increasing in popularity and practice. 7) North America and Western Europe virtually missed the last great move of God that touched the rest of the world and was the greatest ingathering of new believers in history. Even so, signs of a third Great Awakening now can be seen in America. The moral, spiritual, political, and economic corruption that is close to destroying the nation is causing many to awaken. 8) The Scriptures repeat how the shedding of innocent blood brings a curse upon the land. What blood could be more innocent than the unborn? For this reason, abortion is one of the most debasing of all evils. The trend of public opinion in America has now become very strongly anti-abortion. There is much left to do to remove this terrible plague from our land, but the trend is positive.

20 • The Morning STar E-Journal NEGATIVE FACTORS:

1) Studies reveal that only 6% of those claiming to be Christians have a biblical worldview. This indicates that we have made converts but not disciples. The failure to make disciples, which was described as “teaching them to observe everything I commanded” (see Matthew 28:20), has allowed even the basic biblical definitions of sin and righteousness to become blurred or abandoned by many who claim to be Christians. This has resulted in a tragic meltdown of morality in our times. Immorality among Christians has risen to staggering levels. Drug and alcohol abuse remain at epidemic levels. 2) About 75% of Christian youth who go to college will abandon their faith, often within just the first few weeks of school. There is an intentional, systematic attack on Christian faith at most secular colleges that begins on the first day with Orientation, and it is obvious that few have been prepared adequately to stand in the face of this attack. 3) False teachings such as Chrislam (the merging of Christianity and Islam) and a wave of teachings that God no longer judges, which are in basic conflict with Scripture, have been preached without much protest in many churches in America. This is more evidence of a seri- ous weakness in basic biblical foundations of the church and the weakness or failure of the authority of the present leadership of church that has failed to confront them. 4) Though the trend is positive in regard to winning the debate about abortion, millions are still taking place in America each year, with the law of the land unjustly siding with those who murder their own young more than with protecting the most innocent. As Ronald Reagan once said, “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” Because of the inhuman way that abortions are carried out, especially the late term abortions, this is one of the clearest signs of the depravity of a people, and it is still a part of the culture of America. 5) The entitlement mentality that has gripped the people has permeated much of the church in America. At the same time, the life of sacrifice, which is the mark of a true disciple, is rarely seen or taught. This has kept many in such a state of spiritual immaturity they cave in quickly before hardship or testing just when we are apparently approaching some of the most trying times in history.

Solution

One of the great promises in Scripture, II Chronicles 7:14 states, “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land (NKJV) .” In the first three of these four factors required, we have been doing better in these times. We will look briefly at each one. Humility: There has been a trend away from following obviously arrogant leaders and teachings that promote arrogance. Because the Scriptures are clear that the Lord resists the proud but gives His grace to the humble, this has resulted in increased grace from God.

The Morning Star E-Journal • 21 Prayer: As stated, some of the great prayer movements in history have arisen in recent times. The Lord’s church is called to be “a house of prayer,” and prayer is the greatest power a Christian can have as it can move God to action. A praying church is the most powerful entity in the world, and we are moving toward becoming a church whose lifeblood is prayer. Seeking His face: Man was created to have a special fellowship with God, and to know Him is the greatest and most fulfilling of all human endeavors. Multitudes of Christians are discovering this. Just as there are basically two ways that we can recognize others, either by their face or by their voice, believers are getting to know Him for themselves and are not content to just learn about Him through others. This is one of the healthiest trends in the church in these times. Turning from our wicked ways: This is the one area that seems to have little movement in a positive direction. The Lord gave a very clear definition of wickedness in Scripture, and the consequences of turning to wickedness which we are now suffering as a nation. Our most desperate spiritual need at this time is for repentance to be preached and anointed “preachers of righteousness” who will shake the world like John the Baptist did to prepare the way for the Lord. Eric Metaxas has written two of the most prophetic books of our times about two of the greatest preachers of righteousness. The first was about William Wilberforce who not only had slavery eradicated from Great Britain, but he resolved to change the morals of his nation that had fallen into possibly the greatest depravity in their history. He was so successful at this that the next two generations were known for their morals as “the Victorian Age.” It can be done. The next prophetic book Eric wrote was about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bonhoeffer was the great German theologian who became a martyr by standing up to the Nazi evil taking over his native Germany. If we do not have the resolve and success of Wilberforce, we will soon be standing against the kind of darkness Bonhoeffer faced. Without another Great Awakening, both the American Republic and Western civilization will not last much longer. Both have been in this situation before, and both have had their greatest leaders emerge during those crises. Every movement and every advance must have leadership, and though we are in a leadership drought now, the King of kings is still on the throne, and He will save us if we call upon Him. In Revelation 3:20, we have one of the most remarkable of all portrayals in The Bible—Jesus is standing outside the door of His own church knocking to see if any will hear His voice and open to Him. This makes it clear that in this age He will not come in where He is not wanted. The United States wanted Him possibly more than any other nation in history until the last half century when we started asking Him to leave—depart from our history, and even the mention of Him in our public places. It is obvious that He left these places at that time. The biblical promises for the nation that serves the Lord is that they will be blessed in many specific ways, and one of those is that they will lend and not borrow. At the time that prayer was removed from schools in the U.S., and then the systematic attack began to remove God from our public discourse, America was the greatest creditor nation in history. Immediately the slide began with His removal, and now America is in the worst debt in history.

22 • The Morning STar E-Journal On 9/11 there was almost a universal outcry “Where is God?” He was not here because we asked Him to leave and He did. For a week or two after 9/11 Americans flooded churches seeking Him again, but this did not last long and soon it was back to business as usual. We must beg Him to come back. We need leaders who without apology will ask Him back, caring far more about offending Him than the loud, but small minority who have been controlling our country spiritually like a spoiled five year old who controls the whole family with tantrums. We must throw off the Tyranny of the Minority and never again let such a small group control the destiny of our nation. Without revival, or another Great Awakening, fixing the other crises is not only unlikely, but the lack of integrity and moral stature will only lead us right back to the same place very fast. This must be primary. Getting the right person in the White House is not nearly as important as inviting God to return to our country.

Lawlessness In Matthew 24:12 Jesus said, “And because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold .” Here we see that lawlessness and people’s love growing cold is linked. In Romans 6:19, we are told the major source of lawlessness: “For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness .” Here we see that lawlessness is born out of impurity. One can refrain from adultery or fornication but still be given to impurity. Recent studies have indicated that more than 50% of Christian men and women are now “addicted” to pornography. The biggest increase is with middle-aged women. This could be the single biggest factor contributing to so many people’s love for the Lord growing cold, and all but a small remnant being lukewarm. If we have fallen into this trap, and we still have any love for the Lord, we must repent now and resolve that our love for God and one another will grow. Growing in love is the single greatest indicator of spiritual health. In Galatians 5:19-21, we are given one of the most poignant and timely warnings for this condition: Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God . In Matthew 7:23, the Lord also made it clear that He would say to many on that great Judgment Day, “Depart from Me you who practice lawlessness .” How many believers are going to hear this? We can believe in Christ in our minds, raise our hands in a meeting to make a decision to follow Him, but then not follow Him. The truly born again become disciples, living to learn from Him, and are devoted to resolutely following Him.

The Morning Star E-Journal • 23 Conclusion The meltdown of the moral and spiritual integrity of the church in the West over the last half-century is one of the most devastating spiritual disasters of the church age. This has hap- pened on our watch, but it can also be turned around on our watch. It has been done before. Overall the church in America may be drier than it has ever been, but this can be turned into the greatest opportunity—dry wood will ignite much faster. Who knows—a single person who throws off the sin that has entangled them and becomes the flaming fire that His mes- sengers are called to be could be the spark that begins the greatest revival in history. Why not us? Why not now? If it does not happen soon, Western civilization will cease to exist like the previous ones. If it does happen, having learned from our most recent and tragic mistakes, we can reach much greater heights in every way.
