Bonnell Summer 2015 Abstract Making Ivan-Uzbek: War, Friendship of the Peoples, and the Creation of Soviet Uzbekistan, 1941-1945 by Charles David Shaw Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Yuri Slezkine, Chair This dissertation addresses the impact of World War II on Uzbek society and contends that the war era should be seen as seen as equally transformative to the tumultuous 1920s and 1930s for Soviet Central Asia. It argues that via the processes of military service, labor mobilization, and the evacuation of Soviet elites and common citizens that Uzbeks joined the broader “Soviet people” or sovetskii narod and overcame the prejudices of being “formerly backward” in Marxist ideology. The dissertation argues that the army was a flexible institution that both catered to national cultural (including Islamic ritual) and linguistic difference but also offered avenues for assimilation to become Ivan-Uzbeks, part of a Russian-speaking, pan-Soviet community of victors. Yet as the war wound down the reemergence of tradition and violence against women made clear the limits of this integration. The dissertation contends that the war shaped the contours of Central Asian society that endured through 1991 and created the basis for thinking of the “Soviet people” as a nation in the 1950s and 1960s.

Nazirxo'jaev Doctoral student of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan ABSTRACT The article contains analytical data obtained as a result of field research, scientific literature and analytical work carried out in the Andijan provincial prisoner-of-war camps in Uzbekistan and near the town of Bekabad, archival documents on conditions and internal regulations, sanitary and hygienic environment, types of economic activities in the camps, the work of prisoners of war, their memories and the kindness of the Uzbek people to them are studied and discussed. INTRODUCTION Many camps for prisoners of war were organized in Uzbekistan on the instructions of the USSR People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs (NKVD). These camps are surrounded by a wall 2.5 meters high, and inside and outside the walls are lined with 7 rows of barbed wire at a distance of 5 meters. Dormitories for prisoners and other facilities (outpatient clinic, bathroom, laundry room, bakery, shop, workshop, etc.) were located inside the camp. The dormitories of the administrative building and security services of the camp were located outside the camp. Prisoners were strictly forbidden to leave or live outside the camp. Bücking Das Blatt Kleinsassen umfaßt den interessantesten Teil der „Kuppenreich‘en Rhön“, welche sich nördlich von der Wasserkuppe und längs der „Langen Rhön“, des Bergzuges östlich vom Ulstertal bei Hilders, wei’thin.nach Norden erstreckt. Von der WasserkuPpe, deren höchster Punkt (950,4 m über d. M.) nur 200 m jenseits der südlichen Blattgrenze liegt, zieht sich mitten durch das IBlatt in nördlicher Richtung ein zum Teil plateauartig verbreiterter Berg-rücken, dessen mittlere Höhe zwischen 680 m im Süden und 630 m im Norden schwankt. Er bildet die Wasserscheide zwischen den westwärts der Fulda und den ostwärts der Ulster und durch diese der Werra zuströmen— den Bäche. Aufgesetzt sind ihm mehrere ansehnliche, durch ihre auf- fallenden Formen ausgezeichnete Basalt- und Phonolithkuppen, der Weiherberg (785,6 m), der Bubenbader Stein (758,8), die Milseburg (835,2), die Oberbernhardser Köpfe (657,5), der Hohl- stein (683,5), der Bomjberg (670,2). Vom Bomberg aus wendet sich der wasserscheidende Berg- rücken, das Tal des Nüstbach‘es in weitem Bogen umspannend, nach Osten, erreicht zwischen Eckweisbach und Mauerschell mit Blatt Kleinsassen.
