Growing Some New Runners!

By Sylvia Rogers You can’t miss the ever-growing amount of young children in orange shirts at local area races. These diligent young runners are none other than the club at E.R. Dickson. This is the only elementary school in Mobile County that has an official running team. Pacer Sandra Green, a PE teacher at E.R. Dickson, got the idea when ten of her students wanted to do last year’s Azalea Trail Run. Sandra said she thought, “Ten students! That is a team!” After that she had students participating in the Knobbley Knee 5K. They have since gone on to run in almost every single Mobile area race including the Saraland Harvest Festival 8K, Guns and Hoses 5K, The Senior Bowl 10K, the Turkey 10 miler/5K and most recently the Panther Pride 5K and the Jag Run 5K. Sandra has worked out a deal with every race director Sandra Green at the Jag Run 5K – photo by Sylvia Rogers that the kids get a discounted rate and the no shirt option since they already have their official E.R. Dickson t- shirt. At the Jag Run 5K, Sandra pointed out a child in a bright Sandra reported that they are actively raising money to yellow t-shirt. She said that this was a member of the get a better training track at E.R. Dickson. “All we Forest Hills Team and this was their first race. have right now is 1/5 mile dirt track. Part of the track We look forward to seeing children in all kinds of bright goes in the woods and it is not safe because we cannot colored t-shirt running in local races with their parents. see the kids.” Kudos to Pacer Sandra Green for a job well done! During practices, Assistant Coach Jason Reid is stationed in the wooded area so that the kids have adult supervision at all times. An asphalt track would be better and safer. Since E.R. Dickson has gotten their team they have inspired two other elementary schools in Mobile to start a team. E. R. Dickson had a track meet with Forest Hills Elementary school in October and most recently Olive Dodge Elementary School has started putting together a team. Sandra has worked hard with her students and said they are now running three miles at their practices now! Sandra sees this as an excellent opportunity to teach her kids good behavior and proper race etiquette. It is great to see someone encouraging running as a fitness activity in elementary schools. These students get to see what it is like to race and experience healthy competition and have a lot of fun. Another great side effect is that many parents are coming along and running with their children! This is a win-win situation for everyone.

PERSEVERANCE, NOT PROCRASTINATION Now that we are in the second month of the New Year it is time to evaluate how we are doing with those goals, resolutions, desires or whatever we called those life style changes we hoped to achieve this year. It is not an easy task to break old habits. For those getting started in a new run/walk program, it is particularly difficult; however, let me assure you the benefits will be worth your while. Those of us seeking to improve our existing run/walk programs understand that while discipline matters, it is the joy, satisfaction, and achievements obtained that keep many of us running. That said, we must acknowledge the fitter we are, the less room there is for improvement, and too, the realities of aging must be taken into consideration. Facing limits is an important life skill to which we must adjust before we become disheartened by aiming at the

Pre-registration Saves Time and $$!

By Sylvia Rogers

There are two kinds of participants at Pacer races these days. There are those that pre-register and those that register day of the race. You could realize many benefits by pre-registering. Please consider this when you are thinking about the upcoming weekend races.

You pay a lower rate when you register. The day of race fee is several dollars higher and you don’t get the member discount. If you pre-register, you can more than make up your Pacer membership fee in just a few races.

You don’t have to arrive as early. While everyone else is rushing to get to the day of race to secure their t-shirt spot and a place in the results, you can Paul Baswell shows his award at the Panther Pride 5K – Photo by Sylvia have the extra cup of coffee or Gatorade and leisurely Rogers drive and park at the race.

You don’t have to wait in line on race day Instead of filling out the form and getting in the long line, you could casually stroll up to the pre-registered table and pick up your packet and shirt all ready to go. If there is a line at peak traffic time, it is faster.

You will save time! Instead of standing around in the line, you could be chatting and warming up and getting a good spot in line for the port-o-let.

You will get a shirt! When you pre-register, we know that you are coming and we have a much better idea of how many shirts we will need. We set those aside and everything that is left goes to day of race.

If you have never pre-registered for a race, it could be just the impetus to get you to a race since you already paid for it. Many people have commented that this is a great motivator. Please give it a try!
