By Sylvia Rogers You can’t miss the ever-growing amount of young children in orange shirts at local area races. These diligent young runners are none other than the cross country running club at E.R. Dickson. This is the only elementary school in Mobile County that has an official running team. Racewalking Pacer Sandra Green, a PE teacher at E.R. Dickson, got the idea when ten of her students wanted to do last year’s Azalea Trail Run. Sandra said she thought, “Ten students! That is a team!” After that she had students participating in the Knobbley Knee 5K. They have since gone on to run in almost every single Mobile area race including the Saraland Harvest Festival 8K, Guns and Hoses 5K, The Senior Bowl 10K, the Turkey 10 miler/5K and most recently the Panther Pride 5K and the Jag Run 5K. Sandra has worked out a deal with every race director Sandra Green at the Jag Run 5K – photo by Sylvia Rogers that the kids get a discounted rate and the no shirt option since they already have their official E.R. Dickson t- shirt. At the Jag Run 5K, Sandra pointed out a child in a bright Sandra reported that they are actively raising money to yellow t-shirt. She said that this was a member of the get a better training track at E.R. Dickson. “All we Forest Hills Team and this was their first race. have right now is 1/5 mile dirt track. Part of the track We look forward to seeing children in all kinds of bright goes in the woods and it is not safe because we cannot colored t-shirt running in local races with their parents. see the kids.” Kudos to Pacer Sandra Green for a job well done! During practices, Assistant Coach Jason Reid is stationed in the wooded area so that the kids have adult supervision at all times. An asphalt track would be better and safer. Since E.R. Dickson has gotten their team they have inspired two other elementary schools in Mobile to start a team. E. R. Dickson had a track meet with Forest Hills Elementary school in October and most recently Olive Dodge Elementary School has started putting together a team. Sandra has worked hard with her students and said they are now running three miles at their practices now! Sandra sees this as an excellent opportunity to teach her kids good behavior and proper race etiquette. It is great to see someone encouraging running as a fitness activity in elementary schools. These students get to see what it is like to race and experience healthy competition and have a lot of fun. Another great side effect is that many parents are coming along and running with their children! This is a win-win situation for everyone.
