Cover Art Every hunter in Texas has been waiting for September’s arrival. Doves capture most of the attention of wingshooters, but there is a small army of waterfowl hunters that eagerly look forward to the early teal season. The date for the 16 day teal season is September 13 - 28. Scot Storm’s original acrylic painting entitled “Cattails and Blue Wings II” captures a trio of these speedy, early arriving ducks. “The natural coloration of blue-winged teal almost blends into the blues and browns of the stormy sky, and wispy cattail reeds, however depicted in a vertical format from a lower angle these birds become a vibrant part of the scene,” the artist commented. The vertical image measures 6” x 12”. For more information on this original painting or other works of art by Scot Storm, visit Wild Wings at www.wildwings.com, or call (800) 445-4833.

Triggering the Run – A look back in history Variety at the Jetty According to long time outdoor writer, the late A.C. Becker Jr. the redfish spawn- ing run can be triggered as early as mid August. “This trigger is invariably a tropical disturbance, that may go from just that, to a full blown hurricane,” Becker explained. Becker wrote that storms that roll ashore in the late summer and early fall are almost always followed by a major bull red run that follows within 24 hours after the squall passes inland. His vivid accounts of the most significant run he ever witnessed in the early 1960s are unbelievable. While writing for the Galveston Daily News at the time, Becker documented over 6,000 bull reds being reported caught after a major hurricane passed just off the Texas Coast and slammed into Louisiana.

Colin Welch with a 33 inch Bull Red caught along the Bolivar surf.

Galveston Bay guide, Captain Tim Young, says the schools of redfish he usually sees in Trinity and East Bay did not show themselves throughout the summer. “The reds did not stack up in the bay like they do in a normal year this summer, and my guess is, the jetties and the surf is the only place they could be right now. If you want reds, the Gulf is the ticket.” he says. Captain Greg Verm says he will be fishing for bull reds during the entire month of September at both of the Galveston Jetties. “I’ll target these big reds with large baits like shad or live croaker fished on the bottom. These fish travel in schools and we’ll hook two and three at time.” he says. Freeport area guide, Captain Mike Segall also plans to spend much of the month of September fishing for bull reds along the Freeport jetties and along the beach in the surf. “It’s as easy as soaking some freshly cut shad on the bottom,” he says. “Just cast out and get ready for a strong fight!” With summer winding down, fall brings an end to some frustrating inconsistency. Check the tides, pick a spot accordingly, and go after these spawning reds that swim like an underwater bulldozer. Multiple hook ups will be the norm, so get out there and burn up those drag washers! It feels great to plan for success in September!
