  • Other Tobacco Products (OTP) Are Products Including Smokeless and “Non-Cigarette” Materials
Other tobacco products (OTP) are products including smokeless and “non-cigarette” materials. For more information on smoking and how to quit using tobacco products, check out our page on tobacco. A tobacco user may actually absorb more nicotine from chewing tobacco or snuff than they do from a cigarette (Mayo Clinic). The health consequences of smokeless tobacco use include oral, throat and pancreatic cancer, tooth loss, gum disease and increased risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. (American Cancer Society, “Smokeless Tobacco” 2010) Smokeless tobacco products contain at least 28 cancer-causing agents. The risk of certain types of cancer increases with smokeless tobacco: Esophageal cancer, oral cancer (cancer of the mouth, throat, cheek, gums, lips, tongue). Other Tobacco Products (OTP) Include: Chewing/Spit Tobacco A smokeless tobacco product consumed by placing a portion of the tobacco between the cheek and gum or upper lip teeth and chewing. Must be manually crushed with the teeth to release flavor and nicotine. Spitting is required to get rid of the unwanted juices. Loose Tobacco Loose (pipe) tobacco is made of cured and dried leaves; often a mix of various types of leaves (including spiced leaves), with sweeteners and flavorings added to create an "aromatic" flavor. The tobacco used resembles cigarette tobacco, but is more moist and cut more coarsely. Pipe smoke is usually held in the mouth and then exhaled without inhaling into the lungs. Blunt Wraps Blunt wraps are hollowed out tobacco leaf to be filled by the consumer with tobacco (or other drugs) and comes in different flavors. Flavors are added to create aromas and flavors.

Methods: We reviewed internal tobacco industry documents, the Pollay 20th Century Tobacco Ad Collection, and newspaper sources, categorized themes and strategies, and summarized findings. Results: Cigarette advertisements have used the term “natural” since at least 1910, but it was not until the 1950s that “natural” referred to a core element of brand identity, used to describe specific product attributes (filter, menthol, tobacco leaf).

WHAT is a CIGAR? What is a cigar? A cigar is a roll of fermented tobacco wrapped either in tobacco leaf or paper that contains tobacco or tobacco extract. Large (Premium) Cigar: Tobacco tightly rolled in dried tobacco leaves that is handmade and sells for at least $2 per cigar. These cigars can be more than 7 inches in length, and typically contain between 5 and 20 grams of tobacco. Some premium cigars contain the tobacco equivalent of an entire pack of cigarettes, and can take between 1 and 2 hours to smoke.1 Cigarillos or Small Cigars: Tobacco wrapped in dried tobacco leaf or in any substance containing tobacco. These products are shorter and narrower than large cigars and contain about 3 grams of tobacco.1 They are available with or without a filter tip. Cigarillo/Small Cigar products are available in a variety of fruit and candy flavors and can often be purchased individually or in small ‘packs’ of five or less. Popular brands include Black & Mild, Swisher Sweets, White Owl and Phillies Cigarillos. These products are attractive, affordable, and attainable to youth. 1 NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE. • Do You Know... Tobacco
Do You Know... What is it? Tobacco is a plant (Nicotiana tabacum and Tobacco Nicotiana rustica) that contains nicotine, an addictive drug with both stimulant and depressant effects. Tobacco is most commonly smoked in cigarettes. It is also smoked in cigars or pipes, chewed as chewing tobacco, sniffed as dry snuff or held inside the lip or cheek as wet snuff. Tobacco may also be mixed with cannabis and smoked in “joints.” All methods of using tobacco deliver nicotine to the body. Although tobacco is legal, federal, provincial and municipal laws tightly control tobacco manufacture, marketing, distribution and use. Second-hand tobacco smoke is now recognized as a health danger, which has led to increasing restrictions on where people can smoke. Violations of tobacco-related laws can result in fines and/or prison terms. 1/5 © 2003, 2010 CAMH | www.camh.ca Where does tobacco come from? How does tobacco make you feel? • Little Cigars, Cigarillos, and Cigars
Little Cigars, Cigarillos, and Cigars: A Guide for Local Communities Prepared by: The Association for Nonsmokers-Minnesota 2395 University Avenue West, Suite 310 Saint Paul, MN 55114 www.ansrmn.org 651.646.3005 1 Executive summary The Ramsey Tobacco Coalition, a program of the Association for Nonsmokers-MN (ANSR), works to reduce youth access to tobacco throughout communities in Ramsey County. Because youth are price sensitive, a proven youth tobacco prevention strategy is to make it harder for youth to obtain tobacco products by increasing their price. This is especially true for little cigars and cigarillos. These sweet, flavored tobacco products are much less expensive than cigarettes, in part because they are sold individually. These products are heavily promoted to youth and, as a result, are popular with them. According the Minnesota Department of Health, 40% of Minnesota high school students report that they have tried cigars. Communities can help prevent youth from becoming addicted to cigars by regulating the sale of these harmful products at the local level. The cigars of today The cigar market has changed. Unlike the large stogies of the past, the newest generation of cigars is cheap, flavored, and smaller in size. The rapidly growing availability of these cheap cigars caused the sale of cigars to double in the U.S. from 2000 to 2012.1 Today, cigars are available in numerous flavors, sizes, and price points making them appealing and accessible to youth. Flavoring. Cigars are available in many flavors such as: chocolate, ba boom strawberry kiwi, grape, watermelon, and pineapple. Size. Cigars are sold in a number of sizes and go by different names such as: cigar, cigarillo, blunt, and little cigar.

  • Smoking Before High School
THE PATH TO TOBACCO ADDICTION STARTS AT VERY YOUNG AGES Lifetime smoking and other tobacco use almost always begins by the time kids graduate from high school.1 Young kids’ naïve experimentation frequently develops into regular smoking, which typically turns into a strong addiction—well before the age of 18—that can overpower the most well-intentioned efforts to quit. Any efforts to decrease future tobacco use levels among high school students, college-aged youths or adults must include a focus on reducing experimentation and regular tobacco use among teenagers and pre-teens. How Early Do Kids Try Smoking?
