Editor’s Note The month of February had been mired in the COVID-19 outbreak with the country experiencing a test of nerves as well as resilience.

The Club had been monitoring the situation from the onset and had responded rapidly by implementing precautionary measures when the DORSCON alert level was raised to Orange on Feb 7. Screening stations were set up and functioning the following morning for temperature checking, health and travel declarations and contact tracking.

Despite the additional time taken to enter the Club, the screenings were carried out smoothly and members experienced only minimum inconvenience, especially when the member card readers were installed within a week.

As we stay vigilant and take the necessary safeguards, it is important to keep abreast of the developments through official sources and validated media. At the same time, life should go on as normally as possible.

In this issue of Keppel Links, we bring you a refreshing story on the Club’s Heritage – Kampung Agas, a village that was part of our current golf course until the 1970s. We are also featuring "Flashback", a recollection of the Club's archived photographs and monthly newsletter articles.

For members who missed our Lunar New Year Lo Hei celebrations, you can read about the fun-packed event here. For aspiring young golfers, we have a special feature on one of our Junior Golf champions who has made the Club proud with her achievements.

Please download a copy of March eKeppelLinks from our website: http://keppelclub.com.sg/EKEPPEL-LINKS. Archived copies of eKeppelLinks are also available for download. Printed copies of Keppel Links can be requested from the main reception. Besides the monthly newsletter, members are informed of the latest updates on the Club’s website and social media platforms.

The entire Club was filled with the celebratory sounds of drums, gongs and cymbals the Sunday afternoon of Feb 2 as members and guests made their way to the swimming pool annex for the Lunar New Year celebrations. Keppel Links • March 2020 13 GOLF NEWS Hollow Coring Enhancing your golfing experience

In an effort to create the best possible gameplay for golfers, our golf course maintenance staff carried out the annual hollow coring exercise on our greens last month. The full-day operation removes “cores” of soil, as well as thatch from our greens. In doing so, it reduces compaction of the soil and promotes the healthy growth of grass on the turf.

Here’s how hollow coring is carried out in a nutshell:

1) A lawn aerator with hollow tines removes the existing soil cores and 4) A greens mower with brush thatch from the greens. attachments ensures that the sand particles are evenly distributed to the hollow core holes.

2) Next, a tow-behind blower is used to rid the soil cores and particles formed above ground.

The core holes require a period of four to six weeks before it can be fully covered to allow for optimal golf playability. The extracted soil cores are recycled and used as planting materials.

3) A top dresser fills the hollow core holes with sand.

KEPPEL HERITAGE

Golf may be a popular pastime for many of our Club’s members, but they hardly know anything about Kampung Agas – a village that once occupied parts of the golf course at Keppel Club. Home to a few Indians and Chinese, most of its residents were Malays. Kampung boys working as caddies. In this second story in our series on By Andre C. Mr Kamal, as he is commonly known as, said: “I lived in the kampung during the 1960s with my family before we moved out in 1974.” He said that a total of five bungalows had stood on various spots on the golf course in the early days, some of which occupied the 10th and 13th greens. His house was built on the site where Hole 11 is now located. Nearby Kampung Agas were three other settlements – Kampung Bukit Berlayer, Kampung Dalam and Kampung Luar. They coexisted with what was back then a 9-hole course, and were demolished in 1977 when the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) leased more land to Keppel Club for the expansion of the golf course. Although the upgrading works had forced the residents to be resettled, traces of the old settlements can still be found on the golf course. Mr Kamal revealed that a utility pole that was once used to support telephone lines could still be found at the 7th green. The mock-up of Kampung Agas at “Earth Week” at Keppel Hall in 2018.
