The Club had been monitoring the situation from the onset and had responded rapidly by implementing precautionary measures when the DORSCON alert level was raised to Orange on Feb 7. Screening stations were set up and functioning the following morning for temperature checking, health and travel declarations and contact tracking. Despite the additional time taken to enter the Club, the screenings were carried out smoothly and members experienced only minimum inconvenience, especially when the member card readers were installed within a week. As we stay vigilant and take the necessary safeguards, it is important to keep abreast of the developments through official sources and validated media. At the same time, life should go on as normally as possible. In this issue of Keppel Links, we bring you a refreshing story on the Club’s Heritage – Kampung Agas, a village that was part of our current golf course until the 1970s. We are also featuring "Flashback", a recollection of the Club's archived photographs and monthly newsletter articles. For members who missed our Lunar New Year Lo Hei celebrations, you can read about the fun-packed event here. For aspiring young golfers, we have a special feature on one of our Junior Golf champions who has made the Club proud with her achievements. Please download a copy of March eKeppelLinks from our website: http://keppelclub.com.sg/EKEPPEL-LINKS. Archived copies of eKeppelLinks are also available for download. Printed copies of Keppel Links can be requested from the main reception. Besides the monthly newsletter, members are informed of the latest updates on the Club’s website and social media platforms. If you have a Facebook and/or Instagram account, do subscribe to Keppel Club’s social media sites to get regular updates and to download photographs of events. 1.04cm spine for 208pg on 90g eco paper ISSN 0258-6150 FAO 171 FORESTRY 171 PAPER FAO FORESTRY PAPER 171 Edible insects Edible insects Future prospects for food and feed security Future prospects for food and feed security Edible insects have always been a part of human diets, but in some societies there remains a degree of disdain Edible insects: future prospects for food and feed security and disgust for their consumption. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock.

  • Kuliner Untuk Arwah: Realita Akulturasi Budaya Kaum Cina Peranakan
Prosiding The 4th International Conference on Indonesian Studies: “Unity, Diversity and Future” KULINER UNTUK ARWAH: REALITA AKULTURASI BUDAYA KAUM CINA PERANAKAN Hermina Sutami Fakultas Ilmu Pengetahuan Budaya Universitas Indonesia [email protected] Abstract This paper is talking about culinary especially for the souls of ancestors in Chinese Peranakan culture in Palembang, South Sumatra. This special culinary is served to commemorate the death day of one family member or ancestor according to Confucian ritual. There are clear cultural acculturation evident from Peranakan dishes by doing this ritual. They serve Chinese food using pork as its material, but rich of Nusantara’s ingredients which are not used and not known by China people, such as turmeric ‘kunyit’, greater galingale ‘lengkuas’, temu kunci, citronella grass ‘sereh’, bay leaf ‘daun salam’, etc. One Chinese food, such as babi hong got its new taste by using Nusantara’s ingredient. They also served local people’s food such as opor ayam, ayam asem-aseman which is rich of ingredients. Culinary for commemoration of a dead person in other parts of Indonesia may or may not be the same. There are “obliged” food material, such as pork and chicken. But the dish can be diffrent, it depends on the peculiarity of a region. For example, there are many pineapple trees in Palembang, then people served cah nanas as their dish. This kind of dish would not be found in other parts of Indonesia. Each region has its own influence towards Peranakan food, it depends on the pecualiarities of the region. Nowadays, since there are vegetarism concept in Buddhism, people made culinary for soul become simple.
