December was a proud and exciting month for Ashe County Shrine Club members, in more ways than one.

At a spectacular banquet on December 20th, Ashe County Shrine Club held a historical event with a cere- monial burning of the mortgage note on the Shrine Club building, nestled deep in the mountainous Jefferson, North Carolina. Divan member, Noble Mike Neaves, Past President of Ashe County Shrine Club, entertained those in attendance with a history of the acquisition and building of their Club. It was with a great deal of pride that the officers of Ashe County Shrine, led by Noble Mike, struck the match that ended the indebted- ness they have carried for many years.

In a subsequent ceremony, Illustrious Sir David Sumpter, Potentate of Oasis Shrine, installed the offi- cers for 2015, capping out a night that will be Noble Bill Badger and Noble Edd Jenkins, the remaining Charter Members were remembered for many proud to be present at the Note Burning ceremony at Ashe County Shrine Club. years to come.

We enjoyed a beautiful, sunshiny day on Saturday, December 13 for the annual Cat Square 2 pm Christmas parade and our monthly meeting/ breakfast beginning at 9 am at Allen and Doris Leatherman’s . The Leatherman’s fed 80+ of us scrambled eggs, cubed pork and gravy and “homemade” cat-head biscuits as huge as your hand. The delicious breakfast included Gator Whiz, coffee’s, teas, hot cocoa, apple cider along with Dunkin’ Doughnuts decorat- ed as Christmas wreath’s and Sadie’s “famous” Chocolate Covered Gator Cherries. Yum... Yum...! Captain David Reep held a brief Gator meeting and introduced special guests...mem- bers of the Divan...he also thanked our hosts and the food committee and all the help he had this year from the Gators. Kenny Jarrett introduced a special guest and Shrine patient Tory and her MOM Annette with the Mountaineer Shrine Club...Mitchell County ... Bakersville NC . Annette shared Tory’s journey from a 4 1⁄2 year old daughter riding on her dad’s knee while he mowed the yard on a riding lawn mower...the mower hit a hole and Tory fell off and had her leg and foot torn and wrapped about the mower... A trip to a hospital, a quick “fix” because the family had no insurance and was sent home with her MOM to care for that seri- ous leg/foot injury...wheel chair bound ...Long story short, it was three months later when a Shriner saw her injuries that were getting worse and not healing...He made a phone call NASCARTS and within 24 hours Tory and MOM were transported to Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville... where Tory was and still is treated 8 years later for the injuries...treatment will continue until she is 17 years old where a surgery can do some final corrections after her foot has Captain John Cable 336-880-5790 finished growing...She still must wear special soft type shoes but she is every bit a precious beautiful young lady who bounces around now like all little girls do. “What you do as a Shriner is important!” MOM and Tory and friends are so grateful for the care received from the Shriner’s and proudly rode in the Cat Square parade with the Shriner’s unit. The 15 Gators that paraded were joined by the Road Runners, the Dune Cats, Hillbillies and several Shriner’s floats and the two hour parade was enjoyed by a huge number of viewers who reaped the benefits of professional floats, country designs, fire trucks, “anything goes “ and ending with a Santa Claus atop a princess pumpkin carriage pulled by an reindeer carved from wood and designed by Fulbright Lumber Company!!! 180 + horses ended the parade around 4 pm. The Gator’s were invited back to the Leatherman’s house for Soup and crackers after a stop at the Lincoln County Shrine Clubhouse. This is an annual event that just doesn’t have any comparisons. On Wednesday, December 17th the Installation of Gator Patrol Officers was held at the Catawba County Shrine Clubhouse in Newton, NC. Officiating in this joint Installation with the Catawba County Shrine Club was our own Gator Patrol Organizer, Kenny Jarrett, who is 1st Ceremonial Master in the Oasis Divan. Gator Patrol Officers Installed for 2015 is the following: Captain - Larry Hale 1st Lieutenant - Danny Lyle 2nd Lieutenant - Richard Ellenburg Secretary - Rupert Little Treasurer - David Bowman
