Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

TROPICAL LEPIDOPTERA NEWS December 1996 No.4 LEPIDOPTERORUM CATALOGUS (New Series) The new world catalog of Lepidoptera renews the series title The new series (as edited by J. B. Heppner) began already in first begun in 1911. The original catalog series was published by 1989 with publication of the catalog of Noctuidae, by R. Poole. W. Junk Publishers of Berlin, Germany (later The Hague, E. J. Brill Publishers, of Leiden, Netherlands, published this first Netherlands), continuing until 1939 when the incomplete series fascicle in 3 volumes, covering already about a third of all known was deactivated due to World War II. The original series Lepidoptera. Since ATL took over the series, several families completed a large number of families between 1911 and 1939, have been readied for publication. Two new genera of Gelechiidae, Spiniphallellus gen. n. and SpiniducteUiis gen. n., are de- scribed from mountain and desert areas of Palaearctic Asia. The new genera are placed in the Anomologini, and they are compared with relevant genera of that tribe. SpiniphalleUiis gen. n. includes three species: 5". desertus sp. n. (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan), S. stonisi sp. n. (Kazakhstan) and S.fiiscescens (Turkey), and Spiniductellus gen. n. includes two species: S. atraphaxi sp. n. (Tadzhikistan) and S.flavo- nigrum sp. n. (Kazakhstan). The host plant is known only for S. atraphaxi sp. n., which was bred from Atraphaxis pyhfolia Bunke (Polygonaceae). The higher classification of the Gelechiidae, and especially the Anomologini is briefly reviewed. Arguments for describing these new taxa outside of a larger taxo- nomic framework are given, and we discuss why we describe new genera for the species instead of placing them in existing ones. -
The Genus Bryotropha Heinemann in the Western Palaearctic (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

Rutten, 2005. The genus Bryotropha Heinemann in the western Palaearctic (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). – Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 148: 77-207, figs. 1-422. [ 0040-7496]. Published 1 June 2005. The genus Bryotropha Heinemann in the western Palaearctic is revised for the first time. A to- tal of 36 species is recognised. Nine species are described as new: B. horribilis sp. n., B. italica sp. n., B. nupponeni sp. n., B. wolschrijni sp. n., B. heckfordi sp. n., B. phycitiniphila sp. n., B. sutteri sp. n., B. hendrikseni sp. n., and B. hulli sp. n. Representatives of two possible further species are described but, due to insufficient material, not formally named. One new combina- tion is introduced: Bryotropha sabulosella (Rebel, 1905) comb. n., and twelve new junior synonyms are proposed: B. tachengensis Li & Zheng is synonymised with B. rossica Anikin & Piskunov; B. glabrella Heinemann with B. desertella (Herrich-Schäffer), B. brevipalpella Rebel with B. plantariella (Tengström); Gelechia galbanella var. haareki Strand with B. galbanella (Zeller), B. cinnamomea Turati with B. figulella (Staudinger); B. mulinoides Amsel and B. zannonicola Hartig with B. pallorella Amsel; B. inexpectella Nel with B. plebejella (Zeller); B. saralella Amsel with B. dryadella (Zeller); B. dufraneella Joannis and B. novisimilis Li & Zheng with B. similis (Stainton), and B. ambisenectella Li & Zheng with B. svenssoni Park. The Prairies Ecozone of southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta supports a diverse fauna, with 2,232 species of butterflies and moths (order Lepidoptera) recorded to date in 61 families. By far the best known Lepidoptera are the butterflies, with 177 species known to occur in the ecozone. The species known to occur in the Prairies Ecozone are listed by province. The Lepidoptera fauna of this ecozone is reviewed in terms of diversity, state of knowledge of the major groups, postglacial and relict patterns, recent changes in distribution, and endangered and threatened species. Résumé. L’écozone des prairies du sud du Manitoba, de la Saskatchewan et de l’Alberta abrite une faune diversifiée qui compte 2 232 espèces de papillons diurnes et de nuit (Ordre Lepidoptera) répertoriées à ce jour, représentant 61 familles. L’écozone comprend 177 espèces de papillons diurnes, qui sont beaucoup mieux connus que les papillons de nuit. -

POWELL Department of Entomological Sciences, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 ABSTRACT. H. H. Keifer was the first person to study Microlepidoptera extensively in California, but after a series of excellent papers in 1927-37, he decided at the age of 35 to devote the remainder of his career to eriophyid mites. Keifer's early career and Lepidoptera work is summarized. He described 46 new taxa (1 genus, 44 species, 1 race), primarily Gelechioidea, all but one from California, 87% from specimens that he reared from larval collections. He characterized larvae and often pupae of about 40 additional species and for others he reported occurrences in California or hostplants or both. A bibliographic list of the total of about 150 species is presented. Additional key words: Gelechiidae, larval hostplants, bibliography, biography. The first person to study Microlepidoptera extensively in California was Hartford Hammond Keifer, who published a series of papers in 1927-37. His approach emphasized biologies and immature stages, his techniques were superb, and his analysis of systematic placements was far ahead of his time, employing hostplant and ecological specificity as well as morphological features of larvae, pupae and adults, which he illustrated in great detail. His work has served as a beacon for standards of quality for those of us who were familiar with it. However, at the age of 35, Keifer decided to study eriophyid mites, and he terminated his work on the taxonomy of Lepidoptera. Hartford Keifer was born in 1902 in Oroville, California, where an interest in natural history and insects, especially butterflies, was en couraged by his aunt, Dr. -
