Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. 23 6 REQUIREMENTS FOR CONSERVATION 6.1 Introduction A very few examples of the artificial habitats considered in this report have statutory protection as SSSI or LNRs, A few, not all the same ones, have good invertebrate records. None have good enough invertebrate records, as seen in the Introduction, to be able to define invertebrate "communities" by more than species lists and, cxcasionally, relative abundances of some species in a very few years. The importance of such habitats for biodiversity consewation is however substantial, as demonstrated above. Few Broad Habitat types could boast as inany as 12-15% of the list of nationally scarce and rare species, and no other for which no Key Habitat has been defined. The situation is therefore one in which we have the minimal knowledge needed to know how important the problem is and, so far, only the skeleton of a conservation strategy which will address it, Clearly we need to know more about the invertebrates, more about the sites concerned and have a better strategy for conservation. It is not easy to judge how to do this and to set the priorities in the right urder. In the following I leave aside the purely synanthropic species which are either controversial for conservation (such as specific parasites) or common species present as curiosities well outside their global range (such as camel crickets and the range of tropical pyralid moths which breed in aquatic nurseries). 6.2 lnvertcbratc surveys We know too little about the invertebrate faunas of artificial sites, in particular and in general, There are two consequences of this, First, important sites may disappear unknown because they have not been surveyed or have been inadequately surveyed. -

TROPICAL LEPIDOPTERA NEWS December 1996 No.4 LEPIDOPTERORUM CATALOGUS (New Series) The new world catalog of Lepidoptera renews the series title The new series (as edited by J. B. Heppner) began already in first begun in 1911. The original catalog series was published by 1989 with publication of the catalog of Noctuidae, by R. Poole. W. Junk Publishers of Berlin, Germany (later The Hague, E. J. Brill Publishers, of Leiden, Netherlands, published this first Netherlands), continuing until 1939 when the incomplete series fascicle in 3 volumes, covering already about a third of all known was deactivated due to World War II. Monochroa suffusella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae, Gelechiinae), new to the Belgian fauna Dan Slootmaekers & Willy De Prins Abstract. On June 20th, 2015 several specimens of Monochroa suffusella (Douglas, 1850) were netted in Kalmthout (prov. Antwerp, Belgium). This is the first record of this species for Belgium. Information on the geographical distribution and biology of the species is provided as well as an examination of the genitalia. Samenvatting. Op 20 juni 2015 werden enkele exemplaren van Monochroa suffusella (Douglas, 1850) met een net gevangen te Kalmthout (prov. Antwerpen, België). Het is de eerste keer dat deze soort in België werd waargenomen. Informatie over de geografische verspreiding en de biologie wordt gegeven samen met een beschrijving van de genitalia. Résumé. Le 20 juin 2015 quelques exemplaires de Monochroa suffusella (Douglas, 1850) furent capturés au filet à Kalmthout (prov. d'Anvers, Belgique). Il s'agit de la première mention de cette espèce en Belgique. Des informations concernant la distribution géographique et la biologie de l'espèce sont fournies ainsi qu’un examen des génitalias. Renner2* 1 Key Laboratory of Plant Resource Conservation and Sustainable Utilization, South China Botanical Garden, The Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou, China, 2 Department of Biology, University of Munich (LMU), Munich, Germany Abstract Background: Many insects feed on pollen surface lipids and contents accessible through the germination pores. Pollen walls, however, are not broken down because they consist of sporopollenin and are highly resistant to physical and enzymatic damage. Here we report that certain Microlepidoptera chemically dissolve pollen grains with exudates from their mouthparts. Methodology/Principal Findings: Field observations and experiments in tropical China revealed that two species of Deltophora (Gelechioidea) are the exclusive pollinators of two species of Phyllanthus (Phyllanthaceae) on which their larvae develop and from which the adults take pollen and nectar. DNA sequences placed the moths and plants phylogenetically and confirmed that larvae were those of the pollinating moths; molecular clock dating suggests that the moth clade is younger than the plant clade. Captive moths with pollen on their mouthparts after 2-3 days of starvation no longer carried intact grains, and SEM photographs showed exine fragments on their proboscises. GC-MS revealed cis-b-ocimene as the dominant volatile in leaves and flowers, but GC-MS analyses of proboscis extracts failed to reveal an obvious sporopollenin- dissolving compound. A candidate is ethanolamine, which occurs in insect hemolymphs and is used to dissolve sporopollenin by palynologists. -

Butterfly Conservation South-Central England Regional Action Plan This action plan was produced in response to the Action for Butterflies project funded by WWF, EN, SNH and CCW by Dr Andy Barker, Mike Fuller & Bill Shreeves August 2000 Registered Office of Butterfly Conservation: Manor Yard, East Lulworth, Wareham, Dorset, BH20 5QP. Registered in England No. 2206468 Registered Charity No. 254937. Executive Summary This document sets out the 'Action Plan' for butterflies, moths and their habitats in South- Central England (Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight & Wiltshire), for the period 2000- 2010. It has been produced by the three Branches of Butterfly Conservation within the region, in consultation with various other governmental and non-governmental organisations. Some of the aims and objectives will undoubtedly be achieved during this period, but some of the more fundamental challenges may well take much longer, and will probably continue for several decades. The main conservation priorities identified for the region are as follows: a) Species Protection ! To arrest the decline of all butterfly and moth species in South-Central region, with special emphasis on the 15 high priority and 6 medium priority butterfly species and the 37 high priority and 96 medium priority macro-moths. ! To seek opportunities to extend breeding areas, and connectivity of breeding areas, of high and medium priority butterflies and moths. b) Surveys, Monitoring & Research ! To undertake ecological research on those species for which existing knowledge is inadequate. Aim to publish findings of research. ! To continue the high level of butterfly transect monitoring, and to develop a programme of survey work and monitoring for the high and medium priority moths. -
