Informes de ferias 56 Oficina Económica y Comercial de la Embajada de España en Kuala Lumpur 3 EL MERCADO DE LOS AUTOMOVILES EN MALASIA RESUMEN Y PRINCIPALES CONCLUSIONES La industria de la automoción en Malasia es junto con la electrónica la industria más impor- tante en el sector manufacturero de Malasia, y de los más importantes dentro del Sudeste Asiático. Malasia es el mayor mercado de vehículos de la zona Asean, con más de 500.000 vehículos vendidos anualmente. Si a esto se le une que España es el tercer productor de tu- rismos en la Unión Europea y el primer productor de vehículos industriales, resulta obvio que este mercado ofrece grandes oportunidades para los fabricantes de automóviles y para los fabricantes de piezas y componentes. El otro hecho destacable que hace de Malasia un mercado muy atractivo para las empresas españolas es el anuncio por el Gobierno de la última versión de la nueva Ley del sector, la denominada Nacional Automotive Policy (NAP) el pasado 22 de Marzo de 2006, en la que el Gobierno, con la intención de crear un campo de juego equilibrado e incentivar la inversión directa extranjera (IDE) de fabricantes extranjeros, reforma el sistema impositivo sobre los fabricantes de automóviles, componentes y partes, tanto nacionales como extranjeros. Esta nueva Ley beneficia a los principales actores del sector automovilístico: -En primer lugar a los fabricantes que esperan que los márgenes de beneficio se amplíen al reducirse los costes; -En segundo lugar, a la economía malasia, pues las medidas impulsarán la in- tención del Gobierno de convertir a Malasia como un centro para la industria del mo- tor; - Finalmente, al consumidor, pues esta reducción de costes se verá reflejado en unos precios más bajos; En los últimos diez años el mercado ha crecido en torno a un 20 % anual, a pesar de que en los últimos años ha habido un frenazo en el mercado debido a la coyuntura económica asiá- tica. El sector del automóvil está en transformación, y se espera que a largo plazo se noten los efectos de la nueva ley del sector. En este sentido se prevé un aumento en las ventas anuales totales, y en particular, de la cuota de mercado copada por los vehículos importa- dos. Por lo tanto, el mercado de Malasia de los automóviles y componentes, por su volumen y progresiva apertura se constituye como un mercado muy atractivo para las empresas del sector. SITUACIÓN DEL SECTOR EN ESPAÑA La industria del automóvil ha constituido a lo largo de la historia de nuestro país y de Europa uno de los pilares básicos de la economía. En España representa más del 6% del producto interior bruto y casi la cuarta parte de las exportaciones totales del país. Asimismo, emplea al 11% de la población activa y el Estado recauda del automóvil más de 21.000 millones de eu- ros anuales. En los últimos años el sector de automoción en España ha experimentado una importante recuperación en cifras de mercado nacional, producción y exportación y en este momento, España cuenta con un sector de automoción enormemente desarrollado y en pri- mera fila mundial en cuanto a niveles y diversidad de producciones (turismos, todo terreno, vehículos comerciales ligeros y pesados). Según los datos proporcionados por ANFAC, la Asociación Nacional de Fabricantes de Au- tomóviles y Camiones, el sector fabricante de vehículos es uno de los principales sectores de la economía española con una contribución al PIB del 5,8%. El 10,5% de la población ac- tiva corresponde al sector de automoción y genera aproximadamente una cuarta parte de las ventas españolas al exterior. España es el tercer productor de turismos en la Unión Europea y el primer productor de vehículos industriales. En los últimos años la inversión de los fabricantes de vehículos instalados en España ha al- canzado los 8.500 millones de euros y se ha destinado en su mayor parte a la adaptación y modernización de las fábricas para la producción de los nuevos modelos asignados. La ampliación de la Unión Europea con diez nuevos miembros implica retos y oportunidades para la industria del automóvil: Por un lado, estos países cuentan con un gran mercado po- tencial de automóviles como consecuencia del entorno económico en expansión, la baja ta- sa de motorización y la elevada antigüedad de su parque de vehículos. Estos países tienen además unos costes logísticos inferiores al estar más cerca de los principales mercados de destino de la producción española, un coste de la mano de obra que es un tercio del español y disponen de personal muy cualificado. Por otro lado, no hay que olvidar que el tratamiento fiscal es muy favorable comparado con la UE-15.

Raja Ahmad Azmeer Raja Ahmad Effendi Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Design Swinburne University of Technology 2011 ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Malaysia is unique within the Islamic world in developing a motor car industry that is geared towards both internal and export markets. After achieving initial success, its export performance has failed to match that of its international competitors. Factors that are suspected to contribute to this failure is in the technology and styling of its models. Moreover, with the implementation of AFTA (Asean Free Trade Area) in Malaysia, the car industry is expected to face the influx of inexpensive established brands from ASEAN countries which will gradually dominate the local market. The research was cross-cultural and tested for possible differences based on nationality and gender. It used qualitative and quantitative techniques consisting of a Car Positioning Task using Semantic Differential scales and a derivation of the Room Effect method in order to investigate the perception of cars and its effect upon the perception of its owner. The pilot and actual surveys using Room Effect method were carried out with international participants. The results indicated that it is reliable and can be used to reveal cultural and gender differences.     16/05/1999 New Proton car out by mid 2000 SHAH ALAM, Sat. - Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd or Proton will unveil a new passenger car in the middle of next year, chairman Tan Sri Mohd Saleh Sulong said. Work on the car is in progress, he said at the launch of the Proton Total Research and Development facility today. Without disclosing details of the new model, Mohd Saleh was confident it would be well accepted in view of the recovery in car sales. He said the new research and development facility would play a critical role in the production of the new model. "It is estimated that the R&D activity of a new model would require capital investment of about RM1 billion. This includes 35 per cent for the purchase of jigs and dies, and 28 per cent for procurement of materials for vendors." The national car manufacturer to date has produced seven models: Saga, Iswara, Wira, Satria, Putra, Tiara and Perdana. Each has two or three variants. Providing details of Proton's sales performance in the past year and to date, Mohd Saleh, who is group chairman of the DRB-Hicom group, said there had been encouraging improvement over the period. Through distributors Edaran Otomobil Nasional Bhd and Usahasama Proton- DRB Sdn Bhd, the company sold an average 5,000 units in the early months of last year. This increased to an average 9,000 units at the end of the year. "Monthly sales increased to 13,000 units in April. In line with this, Proton's market share has increased from 64 per cent to 71 per cent." Mohd Saleh said with more relaxed credit guidelines and improved performance and quality of Proton cars, he was optimistic that sales would increase to 15,000 units per month in the later part of the year.

The sector represents a case of infant industry protection which includes, among its objectives, the state’s aspiration to nurture Bumiputera entrepreneurs as national champions for the sector. Despite close to three decades of protection, the two national car projects continue to depend on foreign partners for technology support. The National Automotive Policies (NAPs) strive to push the sector towards the technology frontier with foreign and domestic investments while seeking to be a regional hub and grooming national Bumiputera champions. The inherent conflicts in these objectives create disincentives for investments while the domestic market is held captive to the national car producers. In terms of car safety, the automotive ecosystem in Malaysia could as well explain the impact of NCAP in other ASEAN countries’ automotive layout. It is expected that there will be growing demand for safer vehicles and also positive response from OEMs in Malaysia and the region.

Accepted 24 August, 2010 The purpose of this study is to measure and assess the performance of 100 largest listed companies in Malaysia. A modified strictly output-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is used to measure the relative performance of each company by utilizing a list of normalized performance indicators based on data published in the Malaysian Business (16th October, 2009). The DEA scores indicate that only 6 and 19% of the companies are operating on the best-practice frontier under the assumptions of constant return to scale (CRS) and variable return to scale (VRS) respectively. No company exhibits increasing return to scale (IRS). Most of the relatively large (revenue-top-ranked) companies show serious scale inefficiency and exhibit decreasing return to scale (DRS). Ranking based on the performance index reveals that top-ranked companies by revenue are not necessarily top-ranked performers. Although ten of the seventeen governments linked companies, GLCs are top-20 by revenue, only one remains in the top-20 ranking by DEA. Three GLCs from bottom-20 by revenue join the top performers exhibiting full scale efficiency. Non-GLCs dominate 75% of the top-20 DEA ranking.
