Treasurer - Ashley De Vera Davey Groundstaff - Tony Foster, Paul Duncan Web Site & Prog Editor - Nigel Sheen WELCOME TO THE Welcome to the players and officials of Connah’s Quay Nomads for this evening’s eagerly anticipated Deeside ESSITY STADIUM derby. Unfortunately due to logistical problems given the quick turnaround of games, and my having to combine the roles of Programme Editor with that of Covid 19 Officer for the club, I have had to produce the programme for tonight’s game before last Saturday’s match against Penybont. So apologies for the lack of reaction to that result and the out of date league table. This is the second of three consecutive home games we have been faced with following the resumption of the league, with Caernarfon due here on Saturday. In order to complete our phase 1 fixtures we then have a really tough run of fixtures, away to Penybont, home to The New Saints and away to Bala. Notwithstanding tonight’s encounter with our neighbours and the current reigning champions of course ! So, it could well be that with things being so close down at the bottom, by the time Phase 1 is complete, we might find ourselves in a slightly worse position in the league than we were before the restart. However, Neil Gibson is an extremely experienced manager, and he won’t let that distract him, as he is well aware the key to our survival success is going to be picking up points in Phase 2, and that’s where the real challenges will await us. Of course, if we manage to pick up a few useful points during the remainder of Phase 1, so much the better. It’s a real shame that no fans will be allowed in to witness the game, as it would no doubt have been a great atmosphere and occasion.

Come on the Silkmen !!

Hannah_Blythyn 01352 762102 FROM THE CHAIRMAN A very warm welcome to our colleagues, players and officials from the old enemy down the road. This is written before the Pen-y-Bont game, I hope we gave a good account of ourselves, giving us hope and optimism before this tough encounter with the Nomads. The reverse fixture at the Deeside Stadium saw us lose but generally we showed determination and resolve. Tonight of course we field a hugely changed team to when we played Nomads last. Neil Gibson and his management team will have us well drilled for tonight as he takes on his respective colleague, . Saturday sees the return of Nathan Craig as we welcome Caernarfon for our third home game on the run. With an away fixture to follow at Pen-y- Bont this gives our newly formed squad the opportunity to get a decent amount of points on the door. The pandemic has led to a crazy year not least in football. Our aim is to consolidate, to stay up and to have a right crack at it next season, with lots of people watching!

04.03.2021 TBC AWAY Bala Town FC FROM THE MANAGER Tonight we welcome Connah’s Quay Nomads to the Essity Stadium for our local Flintshire derby. Personally I’m really looking forward to managing the team in my first experience of a Flintshire derby and will be impressing onto our lads the importance of the game to everyone at our club.

Having spent eleven weeks with no game, we are right back into the action with this game coming just 75 hours after our Penybont fixture, but rest assured that the players will be fully prepared and ready to face the challenge that the Nomads will bring against us this evening.

What we certainly know about Connah’s Quay is that they are an excellent team who are tremendously well managed by Andy Morrison, who in turn has a great backroom staff around him. I speak from experience, having been part of the group myself for twelve months a few years ago. I really enjoyed my time there and have fond memories of the success we enjoyed during my stint, winning the Welsh Cup and beating Falkirk away in the Iron Bru Cup being some of the standout moments.

With this in mind I know a lot of the players and staff at Connah’s Quay and we have to respect the fact that it is the current league champions who are visiting today. Nevertheless, this is an exciting opportunity for our new set of players to embrace the challenge and to test ourselves this evening. From the experience, I hope to gauge just what this group of lads is capable of achieving. We have a strong game plan that we have prepared for and believe that we can cause Nomads some problems. It should make for an extremely entertaining match. Gibbo Essity’s Oakenholt Mill is once again proud to be the main sponsor of Flint Town United

MEET THE MANAGER …. ANDY MORRISON

Morrison joined The Nomads in November 2015, joining from Airbus UK Broughton for whom he had been a key figure as the club reached the Europa League Qualifying Stages for three successive seasons, finishing 2nd twice and 3rd in the Welsh Premier League between 2013 - 2015.

As a professional player, he captained the Manchester City side who won the Division 2 Play Off final at Wembley in 1999 and now represents the Etihad outfit as an Official Fan Ambassador - a role that still continues today.

Morrison's first season at Deeside saw him lead The Nomads to their highest ever league finish and Europa League qualification before progressing to the Second Qualifying Round, defeating Norwegian side Stabæk Fotball over two legs, and not conceding a goal in the process. Morrison built on his first year of success and then guided the team to another record finish, as runners up in the league for the 2016-17 campaign, also holding the record for least goals conceded in the season with just 24 goals. His Nomads side reached the final of the Irn Bru Cup competition, defeating Falkirk, Coleraine and Queens Park FC at Hampden Park in the earlier rounds before overcoming Edinburgh City in the semi finals. And last season, he led the Nomads to the Cymru Premiership title.

PROFILING …. MICHAEL WILDE Wilde joined The Nomads in June 2016 having been released from his contract at The New Saints. During his time at TNS, Wilde scored 151 goals in his 214 appearances. Wilde originally joined TNS in 2002 from Poulton Victoria. He moved to Fleetwood Town in January 2009 before joining Halifax Town and then Chester where he netted 36 goals in 43 games before returning to TNS in June 2012, and was voted as the Welsh Premier League Player of The Season in the 2012/13 season. Wilde made his competitive debut for The Nomads in the Club's first ever UEFA Europa League match against Norwegian side, Stabæk Fotball in June 2016. He has gone on to make over 120 competitive starts for The Nomads, scoring on more than 50 occasions including a brace in both the JD Welsh Cup Final victory over Aberystwyth Town in 2018, and the Nathaniel MG Cup Final against STM Sports in 2020. SELECTED PEN PICS ….

John Disney (Defender) - Disney joined The Nomads from Conference North side, Hednesford Town in January 2016 having had previous spells at Chester, Telford, Northwich and Stockport County. His competitive debut for The Nomads came in a 2-1 victory over MBi Llandudno in March 2016. John went on to play in The Nomads' first ever UEFA Europa League campaign. The 2016-17 campaign was a very positive one for Disney, as he went on to make 26 starts for the side, with many of those coming as a makeshift central defender, a role he took on with ease. Disney left Deeside in May 2017 having made 43(+4) competitive appearances for The Nomads and went on to join Altrincham Town. He returned to the Welsh Premier League in January 2018 with Bala Town before re-signing with The Nomads in June 2018, making his second debut for the club in the UEFA Europa League tie with Shakhtyor Soligorsk. Disney was part of the 2019/20 squad that won the JD Cymru Premier and Nathaniel MG Cup.

George Horan (Defender) - Horan returned to the Deeside Stadium in 2014, having left in 2005 to join where he played until 2010 before moving on to Chester FC for whom he was the club captain, making 138 appearances for the newly formed club following the demise of Chester City. Horan played over 140 games for The Nomads in his first spell with the club which spanned five years starting in 2000. The 2015-16 season saw Horan lead The Nomads to UEFA Europa League qualification for the first time in the Club's history..

Declan Poole (Midfield) - Poole joined The Nomads in November 2016 having previously played at Everton U18s, Wigan Athletic and Nantwich Town. He made his competitive debut for The Nomads in the side's Nathaniel MG Cup Semi Final defeat to TNS, however Poole was to have more luck against TNS later in the same season, as he struck a match winning volley, which also earned him the Welsh Premier League Goal of the Month award for March. In August 2017, Poole became one of The Nomads' first ever full time professional players.

Jamie Insall (Forward) - Insall joined The Nomads in April 2019 having spent a good portion of his career in Scotland, plying his trade at Hibernian and East Fife He originally joined Hibs from Stourbridge in 2015 having also played for Littleton earlier in his career. Prior to his time at Bangor, Holmes had two spells at Tranmere Rovers spanning a combined six seasons. In between, he spent tim at Southport and The New Saints, and before joining Bangor has also played for Fleetwood Town, Newport County, AFC Fylde and York City. He is now a mainstay in Andy Morrison's side, having made over 75 competitive starts for the club, picking up the JD Cymru Premier and Nathaniel MG Cup double in the 2019/20 campaign.

Craig Curran (Midfield) - Curran arrived at the Deeside Stadium with more than 150 games in EFL League One and over 100 games in the under his belt. He made his debut as a second half substitute in the Nathaniel MG Cup Final and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet in the game. SELECTED PEN PICS ….

Jay Owen (Midfield) - Jay arrived at Deeside Stadium in May 2016 and before that had made 70 appearances for Airbus between 2013 and 2016. He started his career with Chester where he made seven Football League appearances and represented Wales at Under-17 level. Jay then moved to Barrow where he made 95 appearances in the Conference and was capped by the Wales Under-23 semi-pros. Owen was named as the Players' Player and Coaches' Player of the Season at The Nomads' end of season awards for the 2016/17 season.

Sameron Dool (Midfield/Forward) - Dool joined The Nomads in September 2019. He started his career at West Bromwich Albion's academy before entering the Welsh system where he played for both Llandudno and Bangor City, the latter under current Nomads coach, Craig Harrison. Has a good turn of pace and eye for goal.

Aron Williams (Midfield) - Williams originally came through The Nomads Academy, winning the U19s Welsh Premier League in 2012. He went on to make his competitive debut for The Nomads as a substitute against Town in theWord Cup in September 2013 and also made his Welsh Premier League debut as a second half sub against Bala Town in December 2013. Williams left Deeside to join Buckley Town where he enjoyed good success and returned to Deeside in January 2020. Has proved to be a very effective winger has has enjoyed an excellent start to the current season.

Aeron Edwards (Midfield/Forward) - The capture of Edwards from The New Saints in the close season certainly raised a few eyebrows and was seen as a huge statement of intent from Nomads that they were not going to relinquish their league crown easily. During his time at Park Hall he won nine titles, five Welsh Cups and half-a-dozen League Cups, earning Wales C recognition in the process.

Danny Davies (Defender) - Another new arrival to the Deeside Stadium during the close season, Davies joined from Cymru North champions Prestatyn Town, for whom he won the Manager's Player of the Season award at the end of the 2018/19 season, awarded to him by none other than Neil Gibson, the then Seasiders boss. Davies is an ex-professional cricketer, having played for Northamptonshire as well as spending three separate stints in Australia to play the game. He returned to the UK after injuring his arm and decided to get back into football. Prior to becoming a successful cricketer, Danny started his career as a Prestatyn youngster before joining Chester City's Academy. The self-described attacking wing-back made his Welsh Premier League debut for Prestatyn's first team when he was 16 against Port Talbot Town and also claimed a Wales U17 cap against Scotland in 2012.

Callum Roberts (Defender) - Roberts joined The Nomads ahead of the 2018/19 campaign having previously played for Newtown and The New Saints. He made his competitive debut for the club in the 2-1 defeat at home to Kilmarnock in the UEFA Europa League First Qualifying Round where he setup The Nomads' goal. Roberts went on to start 29 competitive games for The Nomads in his first season with the club, winning the Nathaniel MG Cup and JD Cymru Premier along the way.

FLINT TOWN ARE UNITED AGAINST RACISM. TOGETHER LET’S KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL. 10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

● Formed in July 1946 as Connah's Quay Juniors, the present-day club was the brainchild of the Everton and Wales centre-half Tommy (T.G.) Jones, a native of the town. ● The new team quickly became a major force in youth soccer, winning the Welsh Youth Cup in 1948. ● By natural progression a senior team was formed and joined the Flintshire League in 1948 ● Prior to the 1952–53 season, the club's suffix was changed to Nomads and the team ventured into the Welsh League (North) ● Despite winning the North Wales Amateur Cup three times in the 1950s, Nomads moved into local football for seven years prior to rejoining the Welsh League in 1966, twice finishing as runners-up at the start of the 1970s. ● Following three successful seasons in the Welsh Alliance, Connah's Quay became founder members of the Cymru Alliance in 1990 and the League of Wales two seasons later. ● Neville Powell joined the club as player/manager in the summer of 1993 though he suffered a bad injury very early in his career at Connah's Quay that would end his playing career. ● The club's home had remained at the Halfway Ground since its formation in 1946, but in July 1998 Nomads moved into the newly constructed athletics stadium at nearby Deeside College in Kelsterton after playing the previous season's home matches at Rhyl's Belle Vue Stadium ● At the end of the 2015/16 season, Nomads qualified for European competition for the first time by defeating Airbus 1-0 in the play off final, courtesy of a Wes Baynes strike ● In the 2019-20 season, the Nomads won the 2019-20 Cymru Premier for the first time, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, after the season was cut short by the 2019-20 Coronavirus pandemic

REMEMBERING …. PREVIOUS FLINT/NOMADS GAMES IN THE LEAGUE OF WALES

Season 1995/96 - Connah’s Quay Nomads 1 Flint Town United 3 Flint marksman bagged his first hat-trick for the Silkmen in this derby encounter at the old Halfway ground. He did, though, have Nomads keeper Phil Collister to thank for lending him a hand, literally, in his efforts. With 10 minutes on the clock, the keeper allowed Emmett to kick the ball from his grasp to score the first. The Flint striker had ran onto a through ball from Steve Jones, and Collister charged out and grabbed the ball at Emmett’s feer, but was unable to hold onto it, and the Flint man held off Stuart Rain to score. Nomads came back strongly, and Vernon Keep’s ball into the box was flicked on by Danny McGoona into Peter Hughes’ path. Lee Williams, in the Flint goal, only managed to half save Hughes’ shot, but Glen Graham was on hand to kick the ball out. But, midway through the first half, former Flint favourite, Chris Davies, made his mark against his old club, levelling for Nomads. Davies netted a rebound, after a Marc Limbert free kick was delivered into the box, and Keep’s effort was initially blocked. The Quay now started to assert themselves in the game, and Barry Thomas went close with a fizzing 30 yard effort that brought out a terrific one handed save from Williams. Keep and Hughes both went close, before Rain blazed wide from 6 yards out following a good low cross by Limbert. But after the break, Flint came out firing. They took the lead once again on 56 minutes. Nomads were temporarily hampered by the loss of Thomas from their defence, who had left the action following a clash of heads. As they were trying to rearrange themselves, Emmett took full advantage of the uncertainty by nipping in between Collister and Rain, forcing the latter to sky his attempted clearance. Timmy Steel pounced on it, and set up Emmett, who slotted home. Emmett then claimed his hat-trick on 67 minutes, when he spotted Collister off his line when about to take a free kick from 25 yards out. With quick thinking, he lobbed the ball over the helpless keeper and it hit the underside of the bar and went in. Then, he found himself off his line only to be lobbed from 25 yards out as Emmett claimed his second. Line Ups : Connah’s Quay Nomads - Collister, Rain, Carroll, Wynne, Thomas, Smyth (D. Powell 71), McGoona (N. Powell 71), Limbert, Keep, Hughes, C Davies (Randles 69) Flint Town United - L. Williams, T. Williams, McKeown, Graham, Emmett (Stratulis 90), Martin, Jones, Smart, A. Davies (Moffat 82), Steel, Himchcliffe Att. 464 Ref. Brian Lawlor Season 1996/97 - Connah’s Quay Nomads 0 Flint Town United 1 Defences were firmly on top in this closely fought affair, with few clear cut chances available for either side. Both teams had suffered just one defeat apiece thus far in 1997, so this game, played in the last week of February always promised to be a close encounter. Flint were without their on-loan defensive duo of Matty McQuillan and Neil Rigby, both of whom had been recalled by parent club Colwyn Bay, but their absence was not noticed, with Dewi Parry and Damien McKeown slotting in comfortably. After a fairly tepid first half, the game livened up in the second period. Rob Jones saw his header pushed around the upright by an agile Phil Collister, and then at the other end, Paul Allen had his effort cleared off the line by Paul Nelson. Chris Davies then fluffed a great one on one opportunity, as he beat Nelson to the ball but his attempted chip was comfortably dealt with by Flint keeper Steve Whalley. Nomads were unlucky when they twice hit the woodwork within the space of 60 seconds. First Stuart Rain hit the post, then Richie McNeil’s shot struck the crossbar. The goal came with 11 minutes of the match remaining. Tommy Jones escaped down the left, although his cross filed to beat the first defender, Gary Wynne, who was stationed at the near post. However, Wynne failed to complete his clearance, as he tried to control the ball and bring it out of the area. Instead, Steve Jones anticipated the play, and managed to get a vital toe onto the ball to poke it home. In the closing minutes, Nomads pushed everything at Flint as they charged down the famous Halfway slope to besiege their opponent’s goal. Fortunately, Parry was on hand to make a last ditch clearance, when McNeil did eventually find a way past Whalley. Line Ups : Connah’s Quay Nomads - Collister, Hinchcliffe, Thomas, G. Flint’s Dave Evans and Nomads’ Chris Davies going toe to toe in the derby battle Season 1997/98 - Connah’s Quay Nomads 3 Flint Town United 2 This final encounter in the old League of Wales took place at Belle Vue, Rhyl, which was Nomad’s temporary home whilst they awaited the completion of their move to the Deeside Stadium. A five goal thriller saw the Quay come out on top, courtesy of Stuart Rain’s 76th minute winner in this Easter Monday clash. Rain ran onto a superb defence splitting pass supplied by substitute Vernon Keep to slot the ball under the advancing Danny Embleton. Although Flint created enough chances of their own, better finishing on the day by their opponents made all the difference. Flint’s Steve Jones, who enjoyed a fantastic game in the middle of the park put the Silkmen 1-0 up after 16 minutes. Nomads had failed to clear Kevin Langley’s corner, and whilst Phil Collister was able to block Michael Scully’s initial shot, Jones was on hand to follow up with a clinical strike. However, Nomads hit straight back when Paul Jones won the ball in midfield and fed Jon Kenworthy on the left. He burst forward and supplied a low cross to the far post, where Jamie Hughes was waiting to slot home unchallenged. Carl Smyth headed off the line in front of the advancing Gareth Thomas, when a cross from Jones had caught Collister out of position. Jimmy Carberry then had a good chance for Flint early in the second period, but skewed his shot wide from 18 yards out, and Thomas put an effort wide from an Andy Davies cross. Nev Powell then introduced Chris Davies into the fray in place of Kenworthy, who seemed to be struggling with a back problem following a collision with Langley, and this seemed to spur his side into life. Nomads broke to good effect on the hour mark. Paul Jones latched onto a Steve Futcher through ball, as the Flint defence were stationery, and slipped the ball under Embleton to put the “home” side 2-1 up. The Silkmen roused themselves, and were back on terms six minutes later. Scully was fouled on the left, and Langley took a quick free kick which caught the Nomads defence off guard. Richie McNeil ghosted past Smyth, who had been left with two to mark, to level up the scores once again. Phil Collister then made an excellent save, when he tipped over a powerful shot from Thomas, who hit it on the turn. From the resulting corner, he followed that up with a quickfire double save to deny both Thomas and McNeil. Down the other end, Hughes spurned a glorious opportunity when he failed to connect in front of an empty net, from a low cross by Chris Davies. In the end that miss didn’t prove as costly as it might have done, thanks to Rain’s goal. Steve Jones could have scored a late equaliser, but his free header bounced agonisingly wide of the goal, when he had been picked out by Tony Lee’s centre. DANBY CALLS TIME ON HIS FLINT CAREER

Popular squad member John Danby announced in early February that he had decided to stop playing at Cymru Premier League level. John, who of course enjoyed a tremendous spell with tonight’s opponents Connah’s Quay, explained his reasons to the club’s website. He said that due to his work and family commitments he could no longer commit to the busy preparation schedule required to continue to play in the Cymru Premier. He went on to say " I’ve loved my time at the club, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Flint can accomplish in the Welsh Premier. And thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome at the club" He added that whilst the rigours of competing at the highest level in Welsh football were too demanding of his time, he was not quite ready to retire completely, and hoped to carry on playing at some level. John joined us from neighbours Connah's Quay Nomads, for whom he enjoyed several successful seasons. He is probably best known for his time at Chester, for whom he holds the club record for the most consecutive football league starts with 133 back-to-back appearances. He also had four years of experience with Kidderminster Harriers and spells at Eastwood Town and Bradford Park Avenue. Everyone at Flint would like to thank John for his contribution since joining us at the beginning of last season, and playing such an important part in helping steer the club back into the Cymru Premier. We wish him every success for the future. In other squad news, work commitments have meant that Aaron Jones, Andy Brown (right) and Wes Baynes have all had to be excluded from the matchday squad submission for the remainder of the season, whilst Ben Steer has left the club, and Nathan Craig has returned to former club Caernarfon, again because of work/training issues. We thank all of these players for their commitment during their time with us.

Welcoming Warrington’s Famous Five to Flint In the January transfer window, Neil Gibson signed five players from Warrington Town as their season was prematurely ended. Here we take a bit more of an in depth look at each of these players.

Josh Amis is a striker who boasts plenty of experience with clubs in the north west non-league scene. Josh started out at Preston before having spells at Northwich Vics, Stockport, Altrincham, Marine and latterly Warrington. In the process he has established a strong reputation in the English non-league set up. Has good ability to hold the ball up, and helping to transition play, whilst also posing a strong goal threat. Jordan Buckley is another forward and boasts lots of pace and energy. He has proven himself to be a good finisher when presented with the opportunity and should bring a real goal threat to the team. Before Warrington he also played for FC United of Manchester. Mitch Duggan is a product of the Tranmere Rovers Youth system, He is a player who exudes energy and enthusiasm. A neat and tidy technical player, with a great work rate when not in possession, his qualities will align perfectly to the style of play encouraged by Neil Gibson and his staff.

Evan Gumbs joined Tranmere Rovers' youth setup in 2010. On 15 November 2014 he made his professional debut, playing the last 18 minutes in a 0–1 away loss against Luton Town in a League Two fixture. Following his release by Tranmere he joined Warrington Town in August 2020. Described by Neil Gibson as having a great desire to defend, Evan is a natural leader on the pitch and is very comfortable in possession. Eddie Clarke is another player who came through the Academy system at Tranmere, before joining Fleetwood Town. He had loan spells at Macclesfield and Stockport before moving to Warrington Town. Eddie is a left back with tremendous pace and fitness levels.

We look forward to seeing our new recruits in action for the remainder of the season as wish them all the very best as we strive to retain our top flight status.
