The report was prepared for section 46 of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, in accordance with the requirements of that Act and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983. It was approved by the Board on 11 September 2019 and provides a comprehensive review of the ABC’s performance and delivery in line with its Charter remit. The ABC continues to be the home and source of Australian stories, told across the nation and to the world. The Corporation’s commitment to innovation in both storytelling and broadcast delivery is stronger than ever, as the needs of its audiences rapidly evolve in line with technological change. Australians expect an independent, accessible public broadcasting service which produces quality drama, comedy and specialist content, entertaining and educational children’s programming, stories of local lives and issues, and news and current affairs coverage that holds power to account and contributes to a healthy democratic process. Author Biography & Book Introduction
“AUSTRALIAN RADIO HISTORY ” by BRUCE CARTY Ph.D. BOOK INTRODUCTION and AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY. Bruce Carty started his interest in radio at the age of five as a member of the A.B.C. “Argonauts” club. By seven his radio interest was listening to A.B.C. news broadcasts. By twelve, Bruce avidly followed the 2UE TOP 40, obtaining their weekly listings from the local music store. At fourteen he became Australia’s youngest commercial radio announcer in 1963 with radio 2KA in Katoomba. He used to pester the announcers to let him panel for them. One day they were short an announcer so Bruce was asked to step in. So started his media career. Later, in Brisbane, he studied announcing, script writing, and program production with Jim Illiffe’s School of Broadcasting classes held at radio 4BC. Bruce then studied for his Broadcast Operators Certificate of Proficiency, with lectures in Brisbane by P.M.G. engineers. These lectures included an examination on the theory and operation of a 2,000 watt transmitter with water-cooled valves. Bruce launched his own closed circuit radio station in his spare time on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, with a studio in the Mooloolaba surf lifesaving club. From here, his SUNRADIO station was relayed via P.M.G. landlines to every Sunshine Coast beach through the public address system at each surf club. SUNRADIO operated every weekend and public holiday, playing the current Top 40. On the odd occasion, he even announced shark warnings for swimmers. Bruce moved into television, working for BTQ-7, TVQ-0 and ABQ-2 in Brisbane, plus stations at Tamworth, Mackay, Darwin, Newcastle, and Wagga Wagga. -

Music on PBS: a History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station
Music on PBS: A History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station Rochelle Lade (BArts Monash, MArts RMIT) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2021 Abstract This historical case study explores the programs broadcast by Melbourne community radio station PBS from 1979 to 2019 and the way programming decisions were made. PBS has always been an unplaylisted, specialist music station. Decisions about what music is played are made by individual program announcers according to their own tastes, not through algorithms or by applying audience research, music sales rankings or other formal quantitative methods. These decisions are also shaped by the station’s status as a licenced community radio broadcaster. This licence category requires community access and participation in the station’s operations. Data was gathered from archives, in‐depth interviews and a quantitative analysis of programs broadcast over the four decades since PBS was founded in 1976. Based on a Bourdieusian approach to the field, a range of cultural intermediaries are identified. These are people who made and influenced programming decisions, including announcers, program managers, station managers, Board members and the programming committee. Being progressive requires change. This research has found an inherent tension between the station’s values of cooperative decision‐making and the broadcasting of progressive music. Honey Month Special
HONEY MONTH SPECIAL May was deemed to be Honey Month here in Australia. A Committee was set up by the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) to celebrate the month. The aim was to educate the public on not only honey but the beekeeping industry in general. It was thought that you might like to see the reports but in by some of the States on their activities. I think you will agree there was a lot of hard work that went into the displays and events. Will there be one next year? This will be raised at the AHBIC AGM to be held on 9 July, 2014 in Melbourne. Page 1 of 12 WESTERN AUSTRALIA Honey Month 2014 in West Australia was a great success as we currently launch into its fourth year. This year our Honey Month included a Honey Festival, A Slow Food Long Table Autumn Brunch and SciTech displays. Each year our Honey Festival evolves and takes on new ground. This year we had perfect weather which enabled us to reconfigure tents and traffic flow. The overall effect was great and we thought it was our best festival to date. We received more funding this year (as we get better at drafting forms to raise money) for the main event, “The Honey Festival” 4 May. The City of Swan and Capilano were our two newest donators this year which enabled us to make the festival more professional. We included some new ideas and had a band playing for most of the day to bring a festive note to the day. -

Introduction Since 1999, researchers from Griffith University have undertaken national research on Australia’s community broadcasting sector. This research has involved two national projects. The first project (1999-2001) was station-based and was designed to gather data on the sector’s stations and participants. The second study (2003- ), currently underway is an audience-based study which has gathered qualitative data on community broadcasting audiences. This audience study, Australia’s Community Broadcasting Audiences Talk Back, is designed to complement the quantitative study of community broadcasting audiences completed by McNair Ingenuity (2004) and also to complete the circle of community radio stations and their audiences initiated by the first Griffith University study. -

Chapter 3: the State of the Community Broadcasting Sector
3 The state of the community broadcasting sector 3.1 This chapter discusses the value of the community broadcasting sector to Australian media. In particular, the chapter outlines recent studies demonstrating the importance of the sector. 3.2 The chapter includes an examination of the sector’s ethos and an outline of the services provided by community broadcasters. More detail is provided on the three categories of broadcaster identified as having special needs or cultural sensitivities. 3.3 The chapter also discusses the sector’s contribution to the economy, and the importance of the community broadcasting sector as a training ground for the wider media industry including the national and commercial broadcasters. Recent studies 3.4 A considerable amount of research and survey work has been conducted to establish the significance of the community broadcasting sector is in Australia’s broader media sector. 3.5 Several comprehensive studies of the community broadcasting sector have been completed in recent years. The studies are: Culture Commitment Community – The Australian Community Radio Sector Survey Of The Community Radio Broadcasting Sector 2002-03 62 TUNING IN TO COMMUNITY BROADCASTING Community Broadcast Database: Survey Of The Community Radio Sector 2003-04 Financial Period Community Radio National Listener Surveys (2004 and 2006) Community Media Matters: An Audience Study Of The Australian Community Broadcasting Sector. 3.6 Each of these studies and their findings is described below. Culture Commitment Community – The Australian Community Radio Sector1 3.7 This study was conducted between 1999 and 2001, by Susan Forde, Michael Meadows, Kerrie Foxwell from Griffith University. 3.8 CBF discussed the research: This seminal work studies the current issues, structure and value of the community radio sector from the perspective of those working within it as volunteers and staff.
