Flight Inspection History Written by Scott Thompson - Sacramento Flight Inspection Office (May 2008) Through the brief but brilliant span of aviation history, the United States has been at the leading edge of advancing technology, from airframe and engines to navigation aids and avionics. One key component of American aviation progress has always been the airway and navigation system that today makes all-weather transcontinental flight unremarkable and routine. From the initial, tentative efforts aimed at supporting the infant air mail service of the early 1920s and the establishment of the airline industry in the 1930s and 1940s, air navigation later guided aviation into the jet age and now looks to satellite technology for direction. Today, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides, as one of many services, the management and maintenance of the American airway system. A little-seen but still important element of that maintenance process is airborne flight inspection. Flight inspection has long been a vital part of providing a safe air transportation system. The concept is almost as old as the airways themselves. The first flight inspectors flew war surplus open-cockpit biplanes, bouncing around with airmail pilots and watching over a steadily growing airway system predicated on airway light beacons to provide navigational guidance. The advent of radio navigation brought an increased importance to the flight inspector, as his was the only platform that could evaluate the radio transmitters from where they were used: in the air. With the development of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and the Very High Frequency Omni-directional Range (VOR), flight inspection became an essential element to verify the accuracy of the system. -

A Brief History of Radio Broadcasting in Africa Radio is by far the dominant and most important mass medium in Africa. Its flexibility, low cost, and oral character meet Africa's situation very well. Yet radio is less developed in Africa than it is anywhere else. There are relatively few radio stations in each of Africa's 53 nations and fewer radio sets per head of population than anywhere else in the world. Radio remains the top medium in terms of the number of people that it reaches. Even though television has shown considerable growth (especially in the 1990s) and despite a widespread liberalization of the press over the same period, radio still outstrips both television and the press in reaching most people on the continent. The main exceptions to this ate in the far south, in South Africa, where television and the press are both very strong, and in the Arab north, where television is now the dominant medium. South of the Sahara and north of the Limpopo River, radio remains dominant at the start of the 21St century. The internet is developing fast, mainly in urban areas, but its growth is slowed considerably by the very low level of development of telephone systems. There is much variation between African countries in access to and use of radio. The weekly reach of radio ranges from about 50 percent of adults in the poorer countries to virtually everyone in the more developed ones. But even in some poor countries the reach of radio can be very high. In Tanzania, for example, nearly nine out of ten adults listen to radio in an average week. -

The subject matter is peculiarities of different types of mass media in the USA. The aim of the survey is to study the types of mass media that are popular in the USA nowadays. To achieve the aim the authors fulfill the following tasks: 1. to define the main types of mass media in the USA; 2. to analyze the popularity of different kinds of mass media in the USA; 3. to mark out the peculiarities of American mass media. The mass media are diversified media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. There are several types of mass media: the broadcast media such as radio, recorded music, film and tel- evision; the print media include newspapers, books and magazines; the out- door media comprise billboards, signs or placards; the digital media include both Internet and mobile mass communication. [4]. In the USA the main types of mass media today are: newspapers; magazines; radio; television; Internet. The existing way of broadcasting and television monitoring has a lot of problems in China. On the basis of the signal technical indicators monitoring in the present broadcasting and television monitoring system, this paper further extends the function of the monitoring network in order to broaden the services of monitoring business and improve the effect and efficiency of monitoring work. The problem of identifying video content and channel in television and related electronic media is conquered at a low cost implementation way and the flexible technology mechanism. The coverage for video content and identification of the channel is expanded. The informative broadcast entries are generated after a series of video processing. Nelson National Institute of Standards and Technology, Radio Station WWV, Fort Collins, CO 80524, USA [email protected] WWV was established as a radio station on October 1, 1919, with the issuance of the call letters by the U.S. Department of Commerce. This paper will observe the upcoming 100th anniversary of that event by exploring the events leading to the founding of WWV, the various early experiments and broadcasts, its official debut as a service of the National Bureau of Standards, and its role in frequency and time dissemination over the past century. Introduction WWV is the high-frequency radio broadcast service that disseminates time and frequency information from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. WWV has been performing this service since the early 1920s, and, in 2019, it is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the issuance of its call sign. 2. Radio Pioneers Other radio transmissions predate WWV by decades. Guglielmo Marconi and others were conducting radio research in the late 1890s, and in 1901, Marconi claimed to have received a message sent across the Atlantic Ocean, the letter “S” in telegraphic code [1]. Radio was called “wireless telegraphy” in those days and was, if not commonplace, viewed as an emerging technology. -

Community Involvement Plan Montana Pole and Treating Plant Superfund Site Butte, Montana February 2017 Purpose The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Superfund Community Involvement Program is committed to promoting communication between the community and the agencies. Active community involvement is crucial to the success of any public project. For the Montana Pole and Treating Plant (Montana Pole) Superfund Site, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ, formerly MDHES) is the lead agency and has responsibility for site management and community relations activities. The community involvement activities at the Montana Pole site are designed to: Inform the public of the nature of environmental issues associated with the site Involve the public in Superfund decisions that will affect them Involve the public in program responses under consideration Inform the public of progress being made to implement cleanup remedies The purpose of the Superfund Community Involvement Plan (CIP) is to summarize public concerns about the site and outline how people can engage throughout the Superfund process. The CIP synthesizes and presents information from meetings and interviews with members of the Butte community. MDEQ interviewed a range of private citizens, local government officials, and representatives from businesses and community organizations. As the lead agency, MDEQ is responsible for implementing the community involvement program outlined in this CIP. The plan will be adapted as necessary to meet changing needs as site activities progress. He needs somemorevolunteerstohelpwith the research Introduction The ability to send or receive a message over a distance to warn of impending attack has been used to mobilise troops for defence since the Roman times. The Romans developed a system using five flags or torches to carry a simple message over short distances. This was usually used in battle to pass information out to army commanders. To carry a simple message further, a bonfire was used set on a high point, usually from a mini fort within vision of one or more other sites. This type of warning system was used during the invasion of Britain, when vexation forts could come under attack from tribes yet to be persuaded of the advantages of Roman living. Near the end of the Roman occupation signal stations were employed on the East and South coasts to warn of Saxon pirates. Roman signal stations on the NE coast of England took the form of mini forts, with a ditch and bank for defence. Black Down in Dorset, excavated by Bill Putnam and re examined by Dorset Diggers in 2016 is of this type. The Saxons appear to have had a system of inter divisible beacon sites to warn of Viking attack from the ninth century onwards. Later, beacons were erected to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada, followed by a similar, but unused system, to warn of Napoleonic invasion. -

Professor, (Sel Grade), Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Vemana Institute of Technology Abstract: Li-Fi can be thought of as a light-based Wi-Fi. That is, it uses light instead of radio waves to transmit information. And instead of Wi-Fi modems, Li-Fi would use transceiver-fitted LED lamps that can light a room as well as transmit and receive information. Light is inherently safe and can be used in places where radio frequency communication is often deemed problematic, such as in aircraft cabins or hospitals. So visible light communication not only has the potential to solve the problem of lack of spectrum space, but can also enable novel application. The visible light spectrum is unused; it's not regulated, and can be used for communication at very high speeds. This paper compares the Li-Fi technology with Wi-Fi and iBeacon technologies.
