VASCULAR PLANTS AND VEGETATION OF MOTUOPAO ISLAND, NORTHLAND, NEW ZEALAND by Lisa J. Forester Department of Conservation, PO Box 842, Whangarei SUMMARY Motuopao Island, off Cape Maria van Diemen in the Far North has a colourful history of settlement. Fifty-two years ago it was abandoned as a lighthouse station and the vegetation left to regenerate. This study of the vegetation of the island was done during a programme of kiore (Rattus exulans) eradication during 1988-90. The island was visited on four occasions and also flown over by helicopter. Vascular plant species are recorded and eight vegetation types are described and mapped. Regeneration is discussed as are interesting records, the island's vegetation values and weed threats. INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY Motuopao Island (Lat. 34° 28'S, Long. 172° 38' E) lies 500m off Cape Maria van Diemen at the north-western tip of the North Island. Covering 30ha, the island comprises two hills with moderately rolling inland slopes and steep basaltic seaward cliffs separated by a wide sand saddle with major valleys running to the west and east. The longest eastern valley faces the mainland and terminates in an open sand beach pounded by heavy surf. Conditions on the island are harsh and dry with a mean annual temperature of 15.5°C and a mean annual rainfall of 992mm (NZ Meteorological Service 1919-1980, Cape Reinga). Soil evaporation is probably very high as the island is windswept especially by frequent strong westerlies. Rough and unpredictable seas make access to Motuopao difficult. A colourful history of settlement is reflected in the amount of disturbance and relics of human activity on the island. -

Buxton Landcare Research, PO Box 40, Lincoln 7640, New Zealand *Author for correspondence (Email: [email protected]) Published on-line: 8 July 2009 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: Species composition patterns and vegetation–environment relationships were quantified for montane volcanic outcrops on Banks Peninsula. The flora of these habitat islands comprises 346 vascular plant species including 82 exotic species and 52 species that are nationally rare, regionally rare, or regional endemics. Both Multidimensional scaling (MDS) ordination analysis and TWINSPAN results illustrated the high compositional and environmental heterogeneity across the outcrops. MDS revealed that primary environmental factors related to community composition comprise both regional-scale gradients of altitude and outcrop-scale gradients of slope steepness, soil pH, area available to plants, maximum vegetation height, and the percentage of the surrounding vegetation that is forest. Accordingly, TWINSPAN separated four outcrop communities that occur on steeper slopes, have less fertile soils and tend not to face north from three outcrop communities that have shallower slopes, more fertile soils and tend to face north. Types in the first group are more likely to be bordered by forest or taller shrublands, whereas those in the second group occur on outcrops primarily bordered by grasslands and support more exotic species. Within these broader groups, communities differ in their altitude and the size, soil depth and shading of the outcrops on which they occur. -

Photo: Jeremy Rolfe. New Zealand Threat Classification Series is a scientific monograph series presenting publications related to the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). Most will be lists providing NZTCS status of members of a plant or animal group (e.g. algae, birds, spiders). There are currently 23 groups, each assessed once every 3 years. After each 3-year cycle there will be a report analysing and summarising trends across all groups for that listing cycle. From time to time the manual that defines the categories, criteria and process for the NZTCS will be reviewed. Publications in this series are considered part of the formal international scientific literature. This report is available from the departmental website in pdf form. Information on distribution and ecology is presented for the Peruvian Muhlenbergia flexuosa. The presence of myrmecochory in Rottboellia cochinchinensis is referred to. Zomlefer ABSTRACT. This study comprised a scanning electron microscope survey of abaxial epidermal features in subfamily Danthonioideae, with emphasis on North American Danthonia. The survey included 21 taxa, encompassing seven genera (Austrodanthonia, Cortaderia, Danthonia, Merxmuellera, Notodanthonia, Rytidosperma, Tribolium) and the eight North American Danthonia species. We investigated micromorphological characters to determine taxonomic utility and whether North American representatives of Danthonia are distinct. We examined micromorphological epidermal features: macrohairs, bicellular microhairs, prickle hairs, silica bodies, and stomata. We found no distinguishing characters at the subfamilial level. Danthonia is characterized by the absence of abaxial stomata and presence of bicellular microhairs with basal and terminal cells of equal length and microhairs with long basal cells relative to terminal cells. Prickle hairs in the abaxial epidermal costal regions of four species of North American Danthonia are reported for the first time.
