2 Study of the diversity of insects associated with the main pests of Eucalypus spp., for the selection of potential biological control agents Abstract The most important eucalyptus pests in Argentina are Glycaspis brimblecombei, Thaumastocoris peregrinus and Leptocybe invasa, species recently introduced in our country. The most effective approach to the problem of forest pests is integrated management, which combines different tactics including biological control. The objective of this thesis was to study the diversity of insects associated to Eucalyptus spp., with emphasis in the trophic relationships between G. brimblecombei and T. peregrinus with their natural enemies (parasitoids/predators), in order to select potential biocontrollers. Variations in the abundance of G. brimblecombei, T. peregrinus and L. invasa and the influence of meteorological variables on different eucalyptus species were evaluated. The entomophagous insects were identified, analyzing their diversity and interactions with G. brimblecombei and T. peregrinus through the construction of trophic webs. From these observations, Chrysoperla externa and Psyllaephagus bliteus were selected to be evaluated as biological control agents. In laboratory, the predatory capacity, development, survival, longevity and fecundity of C. externa fed on G. brimblecombei and T. peregrinus was studied. It could be concluded that the predator is potentially efficient to control G. brimblecombei. The spontaneous presence of P. bliteus, a specific parasitoid of G. brimblecombei, showed different levels of parasitism in the studied sites, showing a limited potential to regulate the pest in the field. Key Words: Eucalyptus, pests, diversity, natural enemies, biological control.

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000).

Received: 13 May 2020; Accepted: 15 July 2020; Published: date Abstract: Potyviruses are the largest group of plant infecting RNA viruses that cause significant losses in a wide range of crops across the globe. The majority of viruses in the genus Potyvirus are transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner and have been extensively studied vis-à-vis their structure, taxonomy, evolution, diagnosis, transmission and molecular interactions with hosts. This comprehensive review exclusively discusses potyviruses and their transmission by aphid vectors, specifically in the light of several virus, aphid and plant factors, and how their interplay influences potyviral binding in aphids, aphid behavior and fitness, host plant biochemistry, virus epidemics, and transmission bottlenecks. We present the heatmap of the global distribution of potyvirus species, variation in the potyviral coat protein gene, and top aphid vectors of potyviruses. Lastly, we examine how the fundamental understanding of these multi-partite interactions through multi-omics approaches is already contributing to, and can have future implications for, devising effective and sustainable management strategies against aphid- transmitted potyviruses to global agriculture.

  • Eco-Climatic Assessment of the Potential Establishment of Exotic Insects in New Zealand
Eco-climatic assessment of the potential establishment of exotic insects in New Zealand A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University by Lora Peacock Lincoln University 2005 Contents Abstract of a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of PhD Eco-climatic assessment of the potential establishment of exotic insects in New Zealand Lora Peacock To refine our knowledge and to adequately test hypotheses concerning theoretical and applied aspects of invasion biology, successful and unsuccessful invaders should be compared. This study investigated insect establishment patterns by comparing the climatic preferences and biological attributes of two groups of polyphagous insect species that are constantly intercepted at New Zealand's border. One group of species is established in New Zealand (n = 15), the other group comprised species that are not established (n = 21). In the present study the two groups were considered to represent successful and unsuccessful invaders. To provide background for interpretation of results of the comparative analysis, global areas that are climatically analogous to sites in New Zealand were identified by an eco climatic assessment model, CLIMEX, to determine possible sources of insect pest invasion. It was found that south east Australia is one of the regions that are climatically very similar to New Zealand. Furthermore, New Zealand shares 90% of its insect pest species with that region. South east Australia has close trade and tourism links with New Zealand and because of its proximity a new incursion in that analogous climate should alert biosecurity authorities in New Zealand.
