In relation to capital structure, there are several main theories. Some of the most notable theories are the trade-off the- ory and the Modigliani-Miller model. In addition to these theories, capital structure theory states that the company’s funding policy to determine the capital structure aims to obtain optimal corporate value (Baker & Wurgler, 2002; Handriani & Robiyanto, 2018b; Hermuningsih, 2013). Various studies found that there were many factors that could affect the company’s capital structure as proxied by the debt to equity ratio (DER). The DER as a proxy for capital structure had been used in the researches by Gómez, Castro, and Ortega (2016), Handoo and Sharma (2014), Handriani and Robiyanto (2018a), Karadeniz, Kandir, Balcilar, and Onal (2009), Michalski, Blendinger, Rozsa, Cierniak-Emerych, Svidronova, Buleca, and Bulsara (2018), Nijenhuis (2013), Onofrei, Tudose, Durdureanu, and Anton (2015), Suarez (2016). In general, these studies used some independent variables, i.e., profitability, firm size, and asset structure as the variables that could affect the DER. Hermuningsih (2013) performed a study that scrutinized the capital structure using the profitability variable and found the negative influence of profitability on the capital structure. The research used samples from various industries listed on the IDX. The results of the studies by Haron, K. Ibrahim, Nor, and I. Ibrahim (2013), Nnadi (2016), Onofrei, Tudose, Durdureanu, and Anton (2015), Sahabuddin (2017) also showed similar results. However, Margaretha and Rizki (2010) who used samples from the manufacturing sector listed on the IDX found different results. They found the positive influence of profitability on the capital structure. This is also supported by the results of Eviani (2015) who also used samples from various industries listed on the IDX. Margaretha and Rizki (2010) also examined the effect of firm size on capital structure and found the posi- tive influence firm size on the capital structure. The same was found by Murhadi (2011) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Eriotis, Vasiliou, and Ventoura-Neokosmidi (2007) in Turkey, Haron, Ibrahim, Nor, and Ibrahim (2013) in Thailand, and Nnadi (2016) in Nigeria. Suarez (2016) also found consistent re- sults. However, Abor (2008) who conducted a study in Ghana found different results where company size negatively affected the short-term structure. Onofrei et al. (2015) and Handoo and Sharma (2014) also found the negative influence of firm size on the capital structure. Eviani (2015) conducted a study that scrutinized the factors that could affect the capital structure of the manufacturing sector in the IDX by using asset structure as one of the independent variables affect- ing the capital structure. Eviani (2015) found no significant effect of asset structure on capital struc- ture. This is also supported by the research results by Kesuma (2009), Nugroho (2006), Suarez (2016). However, different results were also found by Abor (2008) who examined the effect of asset structure on the companies’ capital structure in Ghana. He found that asset structure had a significant and negative effect on capital structure. This is also supported by the results of Onofrei et al. (2015) and Nhung, Lien, and Hang (2017). Besides, Handoo and Sharma (2014) and Nnadi (2016) revealed the positive effect of asset structure on the capital structure. The different results of previous studies related to the influence of variable profitability, firm size, asset structure, and dividend payout ratio to the DER resulted in research gaps that require further research. Previous researches were also performed in various industries and only focused on manufacturing in- dustries. Besides, they did not examine the influence of external variables such as commodity prices or other external variables. Whereas, external variables, according to Nhung, Lien, and Hang (2017), for example, commodity prices such as coal prices for coal mining companies, could influence the

  • Reiterating Indonesian National Identity in the Globalized World Through a New Romantic Movement
UGM Digital Press Proceeding of ASIC 2018 2 Social Sciences and Humanities (2018) : 105-110 American Studies International Conference (ASIC) 2018 Reiterating Indonesian National Identity in the Globalized World through a New Romantic Movement Rahmawan Jatmiko Department of Intercultural Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Indonesia. e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article discusses the possibility of re-evoking and invigorating romantic spirits to reiterate Indonesian national identity. This commences from the fact that despite its comparatively young age, Indonesia has experienced a number of heroic and romantic struggles, notable in our national history; for instance, the “national awakening movement” Boedi Oetomo in 1908, which became the first modern symbol of national struggle in Indonesia, the Sumpah Pemuda in 1928, which instilled in the youth's mind the three factors in common as our national identity, which binds our multi-cultural existence and experiences i.e. the unity of territory, language, and nation; andth the third is Indonesian Declaration of Independence, 17 of August 1945. This study starts from the assumption that those three symbols of struggle and identity are imprinted with romantic spirits, i.e. the sentimental feelings and emotions, which are no longer dealing with the worldly and materialistic considerations. In this discussion, one might question whether Indonesia has ever experienced any romantic movement as what European countries and America had in the end of the 18th century, yet that might not be so critical question in this case. Instead, what might be considered more important is another question such as, “do we need that kind of movement nowadays in order to clearly pronounce our identity?” By careful readings, observations and interpretations based on historiography and other references, this article sees that an attempt to give birth to our own Romanticism might be feasible as a good solution to rebuild our nationalism, since it Keywordsalso deals with recognizing and recalling our lost identity.

U n p a c k in g a N a t io n a l H e r o in e : T w o K a r t in is a n d T h e ir P e o p l e Danilyn Rutherford As Head of the Country, I deeply regret that among the people there are still those who doubt the heroism of Kartini___Haven't we already unanimously decided that Kartini is a National Heroine?1 On August 11,1986, as Dr. Frederick George Peter Jaquet cycled from Den Haag to his office in Leiden, no one would have guessed that he was transporting an Indonesian nation al treasure. The wooden box strapped to his bicycle looked perfectly ordinary. When he arrived at the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, the scholar opened the box to view the Institute's long-awaited prize: a cache of postcards, photographs, and scraps of letters sent by Raden Adjeng Kartini and her sisters to the family of Mr. J. H. Abendanon, the colonial official who was both her patron and publisher. From this box so grudgingly surrendered by Abendanon's family spilled new light on the life of this Javanese nobleman's daughter, new clues to the mystery of her struggle. Dr. Jaquet's discovery, glowingly reported in the Indonesian press, was but the latest episode in a long series of attempts to liberate Kartini from the boxes which have contained her. For decades, Indonesian and foreign scholars alike have sought to penetrate the veils obscuring the real Kartini in order to reach the core of a personality repressed by colonial officials, Dutch artists and intellectuals, the strictures of tradition, and the tragedy of her untimely death.

Women Empowerment Issues In Indonesia’s Coastal Areas Kartini Sjahrir Senior Advisor for Climate Change to Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Resources of the Republic of Indonesia. [email protected] +6282112934285 Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, Republic of Indonesia Jl. MH. Thamrin, No. 8, Jakarta 10340. Indonesia I. Introduction For the last 42 years I have been actively involved in academic research and studies on Indonesian women, spanning all religion, race, ethnicity and even age groups. Yet, the one thing that I believe unite them all is simply: Indonesian women are a marginalized group. Although there are many ways to argue against my point, say by claiming that there have been advances in gender equality in the region, the fact is when I am working in the field it becomes glaringly obvious that women are still considered second class citizens in Indonesia. By discriminating women, we are wasting away their potential to become a productive and educated part of society. Personally, I am an eye witness to the establishment of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in 1976 during the New Order Regime. Now the Ministry has been renamed as the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection. The existence of the Ministry itself shows that our country recognizes that women are in a marginalized and peripheral position in society. With the Ministry’s establishment, Indonesia became a supporter of women’s rights. But despite its best intentions to actively empower women, in practice it fell short of its goals many times. Yet, there were some victories. For example, the government built hospitals and infirmaries, implemented vaccination programs for children, created educational materials addressing women’s and children’s health issues, increased the quality of its nurses and doctors and even established the renowned Institute for Family Planning, which has helped many women stay healthy and productive by encouraging effective family planning practices.
