1 Taylor Bell The Search for Ronald Jones The summer after I turned sixteen, I wanted to drive everywhere. Every single night, after the moon had moved across half the sky, after everybody else had gone to bad, I would go pick Nolan and Hunter up from their houses and we would drive across town to the trailer park where Brandon lived. Brandon, Nolan, and Hunter had all been friends since they were in elementary school, but I had only become friends with them because I once told Nolan that I played guitar and listened to Ozma in a freshman class I had with him and he had interpreted it as a misplaced sense of camaraderie; like anybody that listened to indie pop had to form a legion against all other archetypes of people and music. Brandon's mom owned a standard double-wide among porch dioramas and birdbaths and yards that were more dirt than grass. The trailer had a tree growing straight up through the carport that they had to regularly maintain a hole for. We would bring our guitars over and sit in Brandon's room or on his porch trying to learn how to play The Unicorns, Modest Mouse, and The Pixies until Brandon's mom told us to learn Richie Valens or shut up. She never minded how loud we were, as long is it was something that she enjoyed. Discouraged, but still restless, we would then pile into my old Altima, go to the gas station down the street and buy energy drinks so we could drive until the sun rose and use the cans to create makeshift bongs.

The mini-album Ecstasy (? 1987 - nov 1987) explored the ambiguity that would make their mature sound so haunting and devastating: ecstasy and terror were two faces of the same moon, and that moon shone day and night. Daydreaming and nightmare became the same state of mind as guitars enveloped naive melodies and drums smashed vocal harmonies. Isn't Anything (? 1988 - nov 1988) went one step further than Jesus And Mary Chain, in that it renounced punk's violence and harked back to the most dilated forms of acid-rock. Kevin Shields' "shoegazing" guitar fulfilled Jerry Garcia's and Jimi Hendrix' galactic bliss, and helped the sweet litanies grind their way into a transcendental trance. Electronic keyboards joined guitar noise on Loveless (? jan 1989/? 1991 - nov 1991), the ultimate exploration of textures in rock music. Its stunning chaos can be viewed both as an enraptured "om" to the universe or as a deranged scream in a madman's cell or as a terrified paralysis in the face of a supernatural force.

Media Coverage BreathingProtection.com DAVE FRIDMANN • PRODUCING FLAMING LIPS & MERCURY REV Those who bemoan the lack of invention and experimentation in today's rock music must make an exception for Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips, two of America's finest and most successful 'alternative' outfits. Their shared producer and engineer Dave Fridmann tells Sam Inglis about their unique approaches to recording. Two of the most innovative and critically acclaimed rock albums of recent years have been Mercury Rev's 1998 CD Deserter's Songs and the Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin, released last year. Both are remarkable for their sheer originality, for their blending of orchestral textures and heavily processed 'rock' instruments, and for their richness of ideas; and both were recorded and co-produced by Dave Fridmann at his Tarbox Road studio in upstate New York. Fridmann began his music career as an assistant studio engineer, and is now an established producer, but he has also spent a long time on the other side of the desk as a member of Mercury Rev. "I wanted to be in a band or something, but I figured the best way to meet other people in bands that were successful was to be an engineer," he explains. "One of the earliest projects I worked on was Mercury Rev, and I ended up hitching a ride with them. I toured with the group from '91 to '93 — but not any more, which is probably for the best for all of us. I enjoyed it, but once I got to be in a band, I realised that really wasn't all I wanted to do.
