Critical reactions to the religious experiences contained in William Faulkner's fiction have tended to fall within the context of traditional Christian belief systems. In most instances, the characters' beliefs have been judged by the tenets of belief systems or religions that are not necessarily those on which the characters base their lives. There has been no effort to understand the characters' spirituality as the basis of an independent religious belief system. Mircea Eliade's methods and models in the study of comparative religion, in particular his explanation of the interaction of the sacred and the profane during a hierophany (the manifestation of the sacred), can be applied to the belief systems of Faulkner's characters to reveal the theologies of the characters' religions, the nature of the belief systems on which they base their lives. -

"But I found out afterward that not only each book had to have a design but the whole output or sum of an artist's work had to have a design." In the following pages I have sought to illuminate that larger design of Faulkner's art by placing the whole canon within successive frames of thought provided by various sources, influences, and affinities: Holy Writ, music, biopsychology, religion, Freud/Marx, William James. In the end, I hope these essays may thereby contribute toward revealing in Faulkner's work what Henry James, in "The Figure in the Carpet," spoke of as "the primal plan; some thing like a complex figure in a Persian carpet .... It's the very string . .my pearls are strung upon.... It stretches ... from book to book." I wish to acknowledge my debt to William J. major work" but not "an unqualified success" p. 22) reveals Joyce's "realization that emotional, intellectual, and spiritual exile can be embodied in the domestic relation of the husband and wife ... crucial to his analysis of the artist's alienation from the community ..." (p. 24). Ulysses reveals "the possibility that the sympathy and compassion an ideal love would promote would enable man to escape the prison of self, to merge with the community"; but it also emphasizes "the enormous difficulty of realizing this ideal love" in the modern world (p. 28). Finally, in Finnegans Wake die theme extends to the audience "because comedy and complexity demand similar and corresponding abilities in the reader to participate emotionally and intellectually in the author's vision. Joyce views the individual's capacity for laughter as yet another index of his capacity for love; both love and laughter take the individual out of himself... and foster a communion of minds between the artist and his audience" (p. 31 ). The book "becomes the model for Joyce's theme of the transcendence of the ego, to commune with humanity through the celebration of die common connections within the community" (p. 33). From this bald summary, Rice's approach may seem reductive, but he does not claim to offer the key to an interpretation of his subject. Instead, it enables him to focus his account and view die corpus steadily, die parts in a coherent relationship to the whole. The approach does lead Rice to neglect Joyce's fictional strategies. He does not analyze die limited point of view and its relation to style in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. -

Kerr: Evolution of Yoknapatawpha The Evolution of Yoknapatawpha by Elizabeth Kerr When William Faulkner discovered in Sartoris that, as he said to Jean Stein, his “own little postage stamp of native soil was worth writing about,” he began the imaginative process of creating a cos mos of his own.1 Both the imaginative process and the intellectual concepts reflected in the themes dramatized by the characters are illuminated by an examination of the Yoknapatawpha narratives, in the order in which they were written. Faulkner seemed to be select ing his material from a larger whole which existed only in his mind and which grew as his own experience provided ideas for narrative events and new characters. I argue that Faulkner’s probing of sexual relations in the 1920s provides the necessary context for understanding his treatment of race relations in the 1930s, and that his turn toward the issue of miscegenation should be read as a moment of crisis and transformation, in which racial anxiety explodes within an established landscape of sexual anxiety that takes the female body as its troubled matrix. Reading this crisis requires that we rethink the overall shape of Faulkner’s career, starting with the text widely regarded as his first “important” novel. By resituating The Sound and the Fury within the context of the earlier, under-appreciated writings—Soldiers’ Pay, Elmer, Mosquitoes, and Flags in the Dust—I argue that the novel is a pivotal rather than seminal text, one that newly articulates the psychosexual drama of the early career to the socio-historical problems that will increasingly occupy Faulkner in his subsequent work. -

This thesis is about the Southern plantation in Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha fiction: how it is represented and constructed, how it is narratively articulated and experienced as both space and symbol. But as its full title suggests, Building Yoknapatawpha is equally about narrative structures and spaces too: about how Yoknapatawpha textually fits together; about how this spreading oeuvre was constructed by Faulkner and how it may equally be reconstructed by the reader. It is about both the reading of space and the space of reading – about how the architectural spaces and social order of the Southern plantation and the narrative structures of the novel inform, complement, and challenge one another, and how their affinity may ultimately be used to generate a new “spatialized” model of literary reading. Foregrounding tensions between narrative “details” and “design” and conceptions of “ruin” and “restoration”, this thesis explores how Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha novels function simultaneously as “open” and “closed”. It considers how Absalom, Absalom! (1936) attempts to recuperate the repressed historical connections present in Flags in the Dust (1929), only to erase them once more through death, destruction, and narrative closure. -
