ABSTRACT The influence of the pre-Civil War Southwestern humorists on the work of William Faulkner has long been hypothesized. But it has received scant critical attention, much of it erroneous or so general as to be almost meaningless. While Faulkner's total vision is more than merely humorous, humor is a significant part of that vision. And the importance of frontier humor to Faulkner's art is further substantiated by the fact that many of his grotesque passages derive from ele• ments of this humor. Frontier humor flourished from I83O to I860, and while a large group of men then flooded American newspapers with contributions, it now survives in anthologies and the book- length collections of its most prominent writers — Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, Joseph Glover Baldwin, Johnson Jones Hooper, William Tappan Thompson, Thomas Bangs Thorpe, and George Washington Harris. -

ZSOLT VIRÁGOS THE SHORT STORY AS INTERTEXTUAL SATELLITE: THE CASE OF WILLIAM FAULKNER In a short story that’s next to the poem, almost every word has got to be almost exactly right. In the novel you can be careless but in the short story you can’t. ——William Faulkner (1957) To me she was the beautiful one, she was my heart’s darling. That’s what I wrote the book about… ——William Faulkner (1957) [1] An open-ended, revisable quality Despite the fact that he did mass-produce short stories on occasion, mainly for financial reasons, few twentieth-century modernists were as sophisticated in their short-prose technique and narrative depth as William Faulkner. This sophistication may be due, among several other factors, to his particular brand of a “process aesthetic.” The publishing history of Faulkner’s long and short prose fiction clearly documents his conviction that narratives should always be open to further revision, that they are never complete or finished. This aesthetic, variably practiced by such well-known predecessors as Poe and Whitman, is most clearly manifested in Faulkner’s revisiting and recasting of thematic units in new guises. These repeated tellings have 93 coalesced into distinct novel-plus-short-story clusters in the Faulkner canon, with the symbiotic components of the clusters signifying upon each other. We find, in other words, that Faulkner was, in a sense, often retelling. He kept returning to a vision not quite perfectly apprehended, he tended to brood over his material and approached a subject, a character, a type figure, an emotion-laden symbol repeatedly from different points of view for the purposes of fictional “corrections” or of adding further perspectives. -

GAY FAULKNER: UNCOVERING A HOMOSEXUAL PRESENCE IN YOKNAPATAWPHA AND BEYOND A dissertation presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English The University of Mississippi by PHILLIP ANDREW GORDON June 2013 Copyright Phillip Andrew Gordon 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation is a biographical study of William Faulkner (1897-1962) as his life coincided with a particular moment in LGBT history when the words homosexual and queer were undergoing profound changes and when our contemporary understanding of gay identity was becoming a widespread and recognizable epistemology. The connections forged in this study--based on archival research from Joseph Blotner’s extensive biographical notes--reveal a version of Faulkner distinctly not anxious about homosexuality and, in fact, often quite comfortable with gay men and living in gay environments (New Orleans, New York). From these connections, I reassess Faulkner’s pre-marriage writings (1918-1929) for their prolific reference to homosexual themes. -

Faulkner and Else had an affair that lasted until the end of Boon, especially, looks like a wild man, and in the space of fourteen hours he gets drunk twice. Anyway, I'm not a huge Three Famous Short Novels: Spotted Horses of Faulkner to begin with and none of these stories did much for me. She taught her sons to read before sending them to public school and exposed them to classics such as Charles Dickens and Grimms' Fairy Tales. It's just Old Man. He then fields questions from them. His first short story collection, These 13includes many of his most acclaimed and most frequently anthologized stories, including " A Rose for Emily ", " Red Leaves ", " That Evening Sun ", and " Dry September ". And this had to have some title and so that struck me as being a good title for it. Collected Stories. As I said, frustrated. No Preference. Faulkner's grandfather would also tell him of the exploits of William's great-grandfather and namesake, William Clark Falknerwho was a successful businessman, writer, Old Man Confederate hero. Item Location see all. As far as I can recall I never read a Faulkner novel before. Faulkner's stream-of-consciousness writing requires the reader to apply unswerving focus at every moment; read this book as you would any other, and you'll soon find yourself drowning in a morass of incomprehension, but corral your energy into exclusive, singleminded attention and, as a reward, you will enter 'the zone' to savor a rich immersion in the experience of human spirit. -

PAPERS ON SOUTHERN LITERATURE FROM FLAGS IN THE DUST TO ABSALOM, ABSALOM!: FAULKNER’S DEVELOPMENT OF THE CENTER OF CONSCIOUSNESS Both Flags in the Dust and Absalom, Absalom! are relatively earlynovels of William Faulkner, having been written in 1927 and 1936 respectively. The nine years between the writing of the two novels, being years of great productivity and literary development for F aulkner, however, were enough time for critics to judge the two novels as vastly different in importance. WILLIAM FAULKNER A reader of novéis hospitably invited to talk about them in another country is bound to note the importance of topography. Whether the Americans travel to Italy with A Farewell to Arms, or conunute from Long Island with The Great Gatsby, or put their roots in the middlewest with My Antonia, or are deracinated from New York with The Age oflnnocence, perhaps topography is even more important for generations that spend their Uves on the same terrain. The spirit of the place, the genius loci, the regionalism of the North American South is omnipresent in the work of William Faulkner. For his compatriots who are not Southemers, the South may well seem to look like another coimtry whose history is clouded with the issue of slavery leading to the Civil War, and by legends nostalgically suffused with the verandas and magnolias of Gone With the Wind or the decadent aroma of Faulkner's story, "A Rose for Emily." Given the inclination to Uve in a feudal, quasi-mythical past, and given the need to face up to the windmills of commonplace reality, it is not surprising that Faulkner set himself to rereading Don Quixote every year. In Absolom! Absolom!, Quentin Compson is asked, 'Tell me about the South. What is it like there? What do they do there? Why do they live there? Why do they live at all?" His reply is, "You can't understand it. You'd have to be bom there." But Quentin goes on at some length to try to tell Shreve about the South, until Shreve says, "Now I want you to tell me just one thing more.
