Lloyd: Faulkner Bibliography An Annotated Bibliography of William Faulkner, 1967—1970 by James Barlow Lloyd This annotated bibliography of books and articles published about William Faulkner and his works between January, 1967, and the summer of 1970 supplements such existing secondary bibliog raphies as Maurice Beebe’s checklists in the Autumn 1956 and Spring 1967 issues of Modern Fiction Studies; Linton R. Massey’s William Faulkner: “Man Working” 1919-1962: A Catalogue of the William Faulkner Collection of the University of Virginia (Charlottesville: Bibliographic Society of the University of Virginia, 1968); and O. B. Emerson’s unpublished doctoral dissertation, “William Faulkner’s Literary Reputation in America” (Vanderbilt University, 1962). The present bibliography begins where Beebe’s latest checklist leaves off, but no precise termination date can be established since publica tion dates for periodicals vary widely, and it has seemed more useful to cover all possible material than to set an arbitrary cutoff date. -

The boy, crouched on his nail keg at the back of the crowded room, knew he smelled cheese, and more: from where he sat he could see the ranked shelves close-packed with the solid, squat, dynamic shapes of tin cans whose labels his stomach read, not from the lettering which meant nothing to his mind but from the scarlet devils amid the silver curve of fish this, the cheese which he knew he smelled and the hermetic meat which his intestines believed he smelled coming in intermittent gusts momentary and brief between the other constant one, the smell and sense just a little of fear because mostly of despair and grief, the old fierce pull of blood. -

Doctor of Philosophy (English), May, 1995, 261 pp., bibliography 209 titles. Critical reactions to the religious experiences contained in William Faulkner's fiction have tended to fall within the context of traditional Christian belief systems. In most instances, the characters' beliefs have been judged by the tenets of belief systems or religions that are not necessarily those on which the characters base their lives. There has been no effort to understand the characters' spirituality as the basis of an independent religious belief system. Mircea Eliade's methods and models in the study of comparative religion, in particular his explanation of the interaction of the sacred and the profane during a hierophany (the manifestation of the sacred), can be applied to the belief systems of Faulkner's characters to reveal the theologies of the characters' religions, the nature of the belief systems on which they base their lives. -

4.2 Faulkner Exhibition Walkthrough
CONCEPTUAL MASTER P L A N | UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MUSEUMS 4.2 FAULKNER EXHIBITION WALKTHROUGH The concept behind the organization of the exhibition is to honor the complexity of William Faulkner’s literary works, without either romanticizing or villainizing him as an individual. This is achieved partly by dividing the exhibit into two parts, the first focusing on his literary achievement, and the second on biographical aspects of this prominent Oxford figure. Throughout the exhibition, a range of sources—quotes from Faulkner’s fiction and from the man himself, photographs of him and the places he wrote about, artifacts such as the Faulkner family Bible— enhance the visitors’ experience. The entrance to the exhibit does not assume any knowledge of Faulkner but piques the curiosity of even the most knowledgeable visitor. After a straightforward rendition of the writer’s signature above the entranceway, a quiet gallery space follows, honoring Faulkner’s tremendous capacity for silence, and reveals footage of Oxford during his funeral, as well as a poignant photograph of two men digging his grave. On an opposite wall filled with excerpts from international newspapers, visitors can read about the world’s responses to the writer’s death. Since an introduction to the work is a memorial to the man, the next section of the exhibit focuses on Faulkner’s brilliant and prolific literary achievement and Faulkner Exhibition Plan the tools he employed to produce this body of work. Freestanding exhibit panels in the center of the naturally illuminated initial gallery space introduce the main themes to the visitor. Panels on surrounding gallery walls present a list of his books and stories. -

The Controversy over the Fate of N aney William Faulkner's "That Evening Sun" (1931) has been unanimously appreciated by critics, including 1rving Howe, who considers it Faulkner's best short story (53, 193); but the question of the fate of N ancy in "That Evening Sun," namely, whether she is ultimately murdered by her husband Jesus or not, provoked some initial controversy. N ancy, however, reappears in Requiem for a Nun, which Faulkner published in 1951, and Faulkner stated in 1957 that N ancy in "That Evening Sun" and N ancy in Requiem for a Nun are the very same person (Gwynn 79); and thus the critics reached the provisional conclusion that Nancy is not killed by Jesus (Zender 242). Nevertheless, some critics still claim that N ancy is murdered by Jesus; for example, Edmond V olpe argues in his book, published in 2004, that there is "sufficient evidence" for the theory that N ancy is murdered (288). Volpe claims that Jesus' killing Nancy is indicated by the word "tragedy" in a letter Faulkner wrote to H. L. :vIencken concerning Mencken's suggestions for revisions of "That Evening Sun": "I did not delete the section, the dialogue about pregnancy, altogether, because it seems to me that it establishes Judah [Jesus] as a potential factor of the tragedy as soon as possible." into literary works that were rich because of their ambiguities; into plots, characters, scenes, tone, and structure, novelists invested the paradoxes which their social mores and creative mission forced upon them. Witness the continuous emphasis on doubles, oppositions, contraries, and paradoxes in Twain, Howells, James, and lesser writers. Writers also found a shell of a so- cial role which they occupied in order to be mediators. This was the role of the gentry, not really vital in America since the Revolution. Writers tended to adopt the moral and behavioral codes of the gentry precisely because the gen- try class had become completely marginal by the end of the century, and thus provided writers with the semblance of a fixed position by which they could stand outside society yet criticize it from a superior position. (This analysis should help us to understand why, when the code of gentility finally crumb- led at the century's end, writers looked for another role that was socially criti- cal yet marginal - and adopted the point of view of radical revisionists. Writ- ers of the last quarter of the nineteenth century justified their marginal posi- tion by their adherence to the past; writers of the early twentieth-century ac- complished the same defensive claim by adherence to the future.) So much of Men, Women, and the Novel& is interesting and illuminating that I would have liked to see other lines of development followed. Certainly the roles of male and female novelists were ambiguous in very different ways; and the differences I believe, could be drawn. -

“The Women, the Indomitable, the Undefeated”: The Mammy, the Belle, and Southern Memory in William Faulkner Lucy Buzacott BA (Hons), University of Queensland A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Communication and the Arts 1 Abstract This thesis considers William Faulkner and Southern memory through the author’s representation of Southern femininity, both black and white, in the figures of the mammy and the Southern belle. It argues that the mammy and the belle not only coexist and interact in Faulkner’s work, but are structuring elements of the same Southern mythology. This thesis reads Faulkner’s women in conversation with the development of Lost Cause mythology, plantation and popular fiction, psychoanalytical accounts of racial difference, gender and race as performance, and Faulkner’s biography, and argues that doing so creates new spaces to develop the critical conversation around Faulkner’s female characters and, in turn, his fiction’s relationship to Southern memory, race, and gender. This thesis explores the relationships that exist between women in two sets of paired texts—The Sound and the Fury and “That Evening Sun,” Sanctuary and Requiem for a Nun—along with the overtly masculine narrative of Absalom, Absalom!. It also considers what these relationships mean for masculinity and gender identity under the complex and dangerous racial conditions of the postbellum American South. Faulkner’s own relationship to Southern memory and memorialisation is also central to this thesis as it explores his personal and political investment in the mammy figure via his relationship with Caroline Barr and the representation of this relationship in the essay “Mississippi” and novel Go Down, Moses. -

Its arguments issue from three linked assumptions: first, that semantic meaning, in Faulkner, resides within the smallest of textual locations; second, that this meaning is insistently historical; and third, that the attempt to hide its release as historical meaning generates a formal opacity that, in turn, occasions acutely visual problems at the level of the text. -

She turned her head and spat out some blood and teeth and said, “It's been three times now since he paid me a cent” This paper discusses a black woman character named Nancy in Faulkner's (Faulkner, 1950: 291). “That Evening Sun” who experiences trauma as the accumulation of her constant fear. The analysis is conducted by using Fanon's theory of Mr. Stovall defeated Nancy savagely to express his emotion and fear since psychological trauma in colonial society. The researcher used descriptive- Mr. Stovall's respectable positions as a cashier in the bank and a deacon in the qualitative method as it is a qualitative research in which data are Baptist church were harmed by Nancy's statement.
